Netanyahu to Biden: We’re open to extending truce, but after that, war will ‘continue full power’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he told US President Joe Biden that he is open to extending the current truce, but once it is over, the IDF ground operation will return in full force.

“We brought home another group of hostages, children and women, and I am moved to the depths of my heart, the entire nation is, when we see families reunited,” he says in a video statement.

Netanyahu says he just spoke with Biden about the release, in particular orphaned US-Israeli citizen Avigail Idan, 4, “what a joy it is to see her with us. But on the other hand, what sadness that she is returning to a reality without parents.”

Three freed Thai hostages arrive at hospital for assessment

The three Thai hostages freed this evening from Hamas captivity in Gaza have arrived at the Assaf Harofeh Hospital, the Foreign Ministry and the hospital confirm.

The ministry says that they will undergo a full physical and psychological array of tests, and will remain hospitalized while that happens.

The ministry says it is in regular contact with the Thai embassy, which is updating the families of all those released. They are slated to return home to their families once they have been released from hospital.

Ramallah crowd chants Hamas slogans as it celebrates return of Palestinian prisoner

In a video of the street celebrations that erupt when the prisoner arrives in the city, the young man is filmed among the crowd hugging his mother, a green Hamas flag wrapped around his head. The mother shouts, “With our soul, with our blood, we will redeem you Hamas,” prompting the crowd to chant the same slogan.

The phrase is a common Palestinian chant, usually applied to the redemption of the al-Aqsa mosque.

Another video from the mass gathering shows a woman shouting, “We did not come here to celebrate, but rather to cheer and show our loyalty to the resistance [i.e., Hamas] and Gaza.”

RE: the medic who retrieved a rifle so that a terrorist could use it.

AP verified that the medic/terrorist/medic impersonator is not with Doctors Without Borders, the wearing of a similar medic vest led many to think he was.

To me, the most important takeaway from this incident is that it proves Hamas had an expectation that the "medic" would not be fired upon. What did they base this trust on?

Quite the contradiction to the claims that medical personnel and civilians are being purposely killed.

If this vested man had been shot, it also would have been useful as propaganda to claim a medic being killed while going to the aid of a man with a rifle, shot, and lying on the ground. So a win/win for Hamas.

From AP FACT CHECK:

Published 3:27 PM PST, November 24, 2023
"As fighting erupts on the West Bank amid the latest Israel-Hamas war, a video of shooting on the streets of Jenin is being falsely represented as showing that a worker with the international humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders was involved."
"The man in the video wears an orange vest with the letters “PMRS” below a yellow circle. Amid gunfire he runs to a man lying facedown on a city street as people shout and gunfire is heard around them. He takes an assault rifle from the man, runs a few feet and hands it to another man who begins firing as the man in the orange vest takes cover.
Indeed, the man’s vest matches those worn by members of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, which works in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. A photo on the group’s Facebook page shows a worker wearing the same type of vest, which is clearly marked with PMRS’ logo. In contrast, a photo on the Doctors Without Borders website shows members of its staff wearing white vests with the organization’s red and white logo on the back.

It is not clear whether the man in the video actually works for PMRS or if he is simply wearing one of the group’s vests. PMRS did not respond to a request for comment."

I lived in Gaza and reported on its wars. I'll never forget its hospitality, its children and how they lived life under siege

The above article may come across as an opinion article, but we are going to allow it because Nicole Johnson is an experienced investigative reporter. Reading about her experience of living in Gaza gives us the flavour of the land, its people, and a comparison of life before and since Hamas came to power.

Hamas needs to locate more hostages to extend truce, says Qatar

Hamas would need to locate dozens of hostages held in Gaza by other groups in order to secure an extension of the current truce, the Qatari prime minister has said, in an interview with the Financial Times.

Many of those kidnapped in the 7 October attacks are being held by Hamas, but groups including Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which also participated, are believed to be holding some.

The pause in fighting is due to end on Monday, but Hamas has said it is seeking an extension and would be willing to release more hostages in return. Qatar has been acting as a key mediator in negotiations between the group and Israel.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman said more than 40 women and children are thought to be being held by groups besides Hamas and that "we don’t yet have any clear information [about] how many they can find".

"One of the purposes [of the pause] is they [Hamas] will have time to search for the rest of the missing people,” he said. “If they get additional women and children, there will be an extension."

Asked about the possibility that some hostages were being held by other groups at a media briefing today, President Biden said: "We think there are probably other militant groups but we are not certain."

Israel's war cabinet has discussed the possibility of extending the Gaza truce

From CNN's Kaitlan Collins in Tel Aviv

Israel’s war cabinet discussed the possibility of extending the temporary truce with Hamas when it met Sunday evening, an Israeli source told CNN.

The source said conditions for an extension remain unchanged from the original agreement, which means Hamas needs to release an additional 10 hostages for each additional day’s pause in the fighting.

Remember: Israel and Hamas reached a deal last week for a four-day pause in fighting and the release of at least 50 women and children held hostage in Gaza.

The deal involved hostages who were held captive by Hamas being released in exchange for a number of Palestinian women and children in Israeli jails. The truce, meanwhile, also allowed the entry of “a larger number of humanitarian convoys and relief aid." The first release of hostages and prisoners took place on Friday, with others taking place Saturday and Sunday.

Hamas says it wants to extend 4-day truce

Hamas says it wants to extend its four-day truce with Israel, which has entered its third day and has now seen the release of three groups of Israeli hostages from Gaza and three groups of Palestinian prisoners and detainees from Israeli jails.

In a statement released Sunday evening, Hamas said it wants “to extend the truce after the four-day period ends, through serious efforts to increase the number of those released from imprisonment as stipulated in the humanitarian ceasefire agreement.”

Earlier this weekend, Qatar, which played a central role in mediating the agreement, said it too was hoping to extend the truce, which includes provision for an extension of one extra day for every ten hostages Hamas is ready to free.

"What we are hoping for is that the momentum that has carried from the releases … and from this agreement of four days will allow us to extend the truce beyond these four days, and therefore get into more serious discussions about the rest of the hostages," Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, told CNN on Saturday.

US President Joe Biden also expressed wanting to extend the pause in fighting during remarks Sunday.

In Ramallah, mother of a Palestinian prisoner released during the Israel-Hamas truce chants "With our soul and blood we will redeem you, Hamas"
So this teenage boy in the HAMAS headband was one of the "children" in Israeli prisons. I recall many on this thread were outraged that Israel had Palestinians "children" in prison.

Hardly a child and wow what a mother she is calling for more violence.. not just happy her son is free, but instead using it as a rally cry for more violence.

Then we see the sweet truly innocent 4 year old orphan. She's an orphan because HAMAS murdered her parents in front of her on Oct 7th. The same HAMAS the other mother is supporting.. The horrors she must have seen.

Disgusted isn't even the word I feel for what I'm seeing.

The more we see Palestinians support HAMAS, the less I can see a 2 state solution working.

I very much hope that little Avigail can stay in touch with the Zin family (also released, mother and two daughters). I had read that Avigail became friends with Dafna Zin in particular and I think the Zin family supported and cared for Avigail. I expect a strong bond was made during their captivity.

Does anyone know whether Avigail's aunt and family live in Israel or the US?

Freed hostage, 84, in 'critical condition' after 'neglect', says hospital

Elma Avraham, an 84-year-old hostage who was rushed to hospital after being released by Hamas, has suffered "significant medical neglect", her doctors have said.

Avraham was among the 17 hostages released earlier today and was taken to the Soroka Medical Center by helicopter.

In a statement, the head of the hospital, Dr. Shlomi Codish, described Avraham's condition as "critical" and said there was a "risk to her life".

"She is treated in an emergency department after significant medical neglect for the past several weeks while being held by Hamas," he said.

"She will be admitted to our intensive care unit, and we hope we will be able to stabilise and improve her condition."

Israel and Hamas appear to edge towards extending pause

Lucy Williamson
Reporting from the West Bank

Both Israel and Hamas appear to be edging towards extending their fragile truce, 24 hours before their current deal expires.

Tonight, Hamas offered to extend the agreement, and increase the number of hostages released.

A senior Palestinian official told the BBC that Hamas had told negotiators it was ready to extend the pause in fighting by two to four days, to allow the release of 20 to 40 Israeli hostages.

The possibility of an extension was mapped out in the original deal between Israel and Hamas, and there are thought to be more than a dozen children still held hostage in Gaza.

Within hours of the Hamas statement, the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to this "framework", under which the release of ten extra hostages would lead to another day of truce, calling it "a blessed thing".
But, Netanyahu said, "at the end of that framework, we will return with all our strength to realise our goals".

And top of Israel’s list of goals in Gaza is the elimination of Hamas.
