I think that some people in Israel knew that something was going to happen soon. It is interesting to look at things said prior to this, that basically predicted a revolt. What occurred was wrong, but maybe this was the only way Hamas felt they could be heard.

If you continue to beat a dog, you can't blame the dog for biting you.

So which one of those beheaded babies was beating Hamas’ dog?

Or maybe you were referring to Israel as the dog, because they have been beaten and abused by terrorists and hostile Arab countries for decades while being told to show restraint in responding.

I am sorry but there is no equivalence here.

What happened was “wrong?” IMO that word is thousands of miles too mild for what Israeli civilians endured and the manners in which they were killed.

If butchering babies was the ”only way Hamas felt they could be heard,” they deserve every bit of hell that can befall each and every one of them. In this life and for all eternity.

Slaughtering 1200+ people, from infants to people in their 90s, mostly civilians, is no “dog bite.”

IMO it would be a better analogy to say you continued to beat your dog, and then your dog chewed your face off, and chewed your children’s faces off, and your spouse’s face, and your parents’ faces, and the faces of all your neighbors and friends, and then ran through your entire neighborhood chewing off the faces of people with whom your dog has never had any contact, and then ran back and tore all of you limb from limb and set you all on fire.

Again I’m sorry to be blunt but this is not “wrong,” like an incorrect answer in Math.

This is atrocious, ineffable, inhumane, monstrous, insane and sick. This is unforgivable. This is from the devil in hell and Hamas will spend eternity that way.

In my opinion.

Israel steps up Gaza offensive as brutality of Hamas attacks laid bare

Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said he has “released all restraints” for the IDF in their fight against Hamas, saying the response will permanently change Gaza.

“They will regret this moment – Gaza will never return to what it was,” Gallant said.

The Gaza strip – the coastal enclave that Hamas controls – has been pummeled by airstrikes since Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant ordered a “complete siege” on the area, including halting supplies of electricity, food, water and fuel to the enclave. “We are fighting barbarians and will respond accordingly,” Gallant said.

The siege, ordered by the Israeli Defense Minister on Monday, would include the halting of supplies of electricity, food, water and fuel, which Israel mainly controls.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said imposition of sieges that endanger civilians by depriving them of essential goods “is prohibited under international humanitarian law.”

Sorry if this has been posted already.

Brave lady!

  • Twenty-five-year-old Inbar Lieberman, the security coordinator of kibbutz Nir Am, led a group of residents killing more than two dozen advancing terrorists
  • Lieberman distributed guns to 12 people and coordinated their response amid the unfolding attack placing them in strategic positions to save the kibbutz
  • Lieberman killed 5 terrorists herself, while the others gunned down 20 more over four hours, while a nearby kibbutz suffered a heavy loss from invading forces

Israeli military says it's hit Hezbollah site inside Lebanon

More now on what's been happening at Israel's border with Lebanon.

Israel's military says its aircraft attacked an observation post inside Lebanon belonging to Hezbollah. The IDF also fired at the area.

Israel says it's in response to a fresh rocket attack by Hezbollah - which Hezbollah says was done in retaliation for Israeli killing three of its fighters in skirmishes with Israel this week.

This is the fourth day of violence at the border.

Protesters scale Sheffield town hall to remove Israeli flag

Council begins security review after incident during pro-Palestine rally in city centre

A security review is under way after a protester removed an Israeli flag from Sheffield town hall during a pro-Palestine rally in the city.

Footage posted on social media showed two people scaling the 60-metre (200ft) tall building during a demonstration on Tuesday evening.

The flag is seen to be thrown from the landmark Victorian building and replaced with the Palestinian flag, to cheers from those gathered below.

Reports that the Israeli flag was destroyed were not true, according to a Sheffield city council spokesperson who said it was handed back to officials from the local authority.

The council leader, Tom Hunt, said: “Everyone has the right to safe and peaceful protest but we cannot support the events that took place during the protest outside Sheffield’s town hall.

[…]

South Yorkshire police have appealed for help identifying the two men involved in the incident, which it said took place shortly after 6pm.

The force said “minor disorder” led to the two suspects fleeing the scene when officers attempted to disperse the crowds.

Sheffield city council said a union flag was hoisted at 8pm, a move it said was planned before the incident.

The spokesperson said the council had displayed the Israeli flag to show solidarity.

She said the decision was taken in accordance with the authority’s flag protocol and in response a request from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to consider doing it.

The spokesperson said a full review of the incident had begun, including an examination of security measures

South Yorkshire police have been contacted for comment.

Social media urged to act on violent content after Hamas attack

UK minister calls urgent meeting to discuss coverage as X comes under scrutiny over disinformation claims

The UK technology secretary has summoned social media executives to demand the removal of violent content from their platforms related to the Hamas attack on Israel.

[…]

Donelan posted on X on Tuesday night that she wanted to ensure violent content “fuelled by Hamas’ acts of terrorism” was removed.

“I’ve called an urgent meeting with social media companies to ensure action is taken to swiftly remove any violent content fuelled by Hamas’ acts of terrorism in Israel from their platforms,” she wrote. “We are taking action to stand in solidarity with Israel and our Jewish community.”

The coverage on X, formerly known as Twitter, has come under scrutiny amid evidence of disinformation – purposefully misleading posts – on the platform related to the war.

On Tuesday, Thierry Breton, the EU commissioner responsible for the bloc’s landmark digital services act, which regulates social media companies, told Musk that his platform was “being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU”.

Breton added: “I therefore invite you to urgently ensure that your systems are effective, and report on the crisis measures taken to my team.”

[…]

Research by an Israeli disinformation analysis firm has claimed that tens of thousands of fake accounts are distributing pro-Hamas content related to the conflict.

Research by an Israeli disinformation analysis firm has claimed that tens of thousands of fake accounts are distributing pro-Hamas content related to the conflict.

Cyabra, which has monitored US election disinformation and tracked bot accounts on Twitter in the past, found that approximately 30,000 fake accounts had been spreading pro-Hamas disinformation or gathering sensitive details about their targets. Cyabra said the fake accounts were particularly active on X and TikTok but were also appearing on other platforms.

Media Matters, a US media watchdog, said the attacks represented X’s first test amid a global crisis and had “failed spectacularly” with verified accounts among the sources spreading false information.

The French interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, said 20 arrests had been made in France over antisemitic acts and threats since the weekend. Visiting a Jewish school in Sarcelles, north of Paris, on Wednesday morning, he said: “It’s important that all French Jewish people know they are protected.”

France has stepped up security around 500 sites including Jewish schools, synagogues and cultural centres. Darmanin said police protecting those sites had reported 50 antisemitic attacks, “which shows both the efficiency of the measures, but also the threat which weighs on French Jewish people.”

He had previously said the antisemitic attacks in France since the weekend included people gathering in large numbers in front of synagogues shouting threats, drones with cameras entering school playgrounds, and graffiti, verbal abuse and threatening letters.

'This is collective punishment': Gaza humanitarian worker

Civilians in Gaza are being subject to "collective punishment", humanitarian worker Hozayfa Yazji told the BBC's Newshour programme.

"I do not accept targeting civilians from both sides by any means. To this retaliation in Gaza... In my mind, it's a collective punishment.

"I'm looking out of my window and people just running in the streets of Gaza and they don't know where to go. There is no hope," says Hozayfa, who is the Gaza area manager for the Norwegian Refugee Council.

While Gaza residents have experienced many rounds of attacks in the last 14 years, Hozayfa says they have never been on this scale.

"The situation is very bad, it's beyond even words. In Gaza there is no safe place at the moment," he said.

Hamas designed this attack to then hide among their own civilians, to hide behind mothers, children, elderly. Hamas decided to use their own people as shields. My heart breaks for innocent people in such harm, and it is unbelievable that their own leaders in Hamas purposely planned to use civilians bodies to protect the fighters.

Washington Post reported that Hamas began planning the attack on Israel at least a year ago, with training and logistical help and funding from Iran.

The Palestinian militants behind the surprise weekend attack on Israel began planning the assault at least a year ago, with key support from Iranian allies who provided military training and logistical help as well as tens of millions of dollars for weapons, current and former Western and Middle Eastern intelligence officials said Monday.
Planned it a year ago but made no plans to protect their own people. imo

"Hamas attacked from the south.
Who does Israel have as an enemy in the north?

Hezbollah. It is a Lebanese, Shiite organization, established on the initiative of Iran in the 1980s. Currently, it is the leading political and military force in politically unstable Lebanon.

Hezbollah last went to a major confrontation with Israel in 2006. It is, of course, in contact with Hamas, but Hezbollah has its own goals and calculations. It's not like they'll automatically join this war.
For now, Hezbollah members are limiting themselves to "gestures of solidarity," but they have not used their entire arsenal or combat capabilities to attack Israel.
This is a game of interests.

However,
Israel must take into account in its calculations that if it launches a ground operation in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah may strike from the north. It is probable.

Hamas wanted to strengthen its power and show that it was taking the initiative.
It made a calculation of forces and costs. The fact that fighters and civilians will die is calculated into this operation.
Hamas terrorists have shown that they are more effective than Fatah and that they can succeed in the fight against Israel.
They took dozens of Israeli hostages. They can use them as human shields or exchange them for their prisoners. Every living Israeli is a currency to be exchanged."

From my country's Press:
"The cauldron of the Holy Land:
who's who in Palestine and Israel, who's pulling the strings in the Middle East?"

Gaza hospitals have become refugee camps, says surgeon

British-Palestinian surgeon, Ghasan Abu Sitta, says the hospital where he's working in Gaza has turned into a refugee camp.

"People are afraid and so they're bringing their families to stay in the compound of the hospital as a safe space," he told the Today programme earlier.

The surgeon said there was a "continuous stream of wounded people", but that his Shifa hospital was already at capacity - like most other hospitals in Gaza.

"Gaza has around 2200, 2500 beds and we've already had 4500 wounded," Abu Sitta said.

'We can't call these people human'

In Israel, Menashe and Merav Ram held a funeral yesterday for their 28-year-old son Omri, who was killed by Hamas militants at the Supernova music festival on Saturday.

Early on Saturday, when Hamas began firing rockets into Israel, Omri called his parents, telling them of the attack.

In a second phone call he said: "Dad, it's more serious. People are injured."
Menashe said Omri was going to jump in the car and drive to safety. But then the connection became weak and they lost contact.

"I felt like something was happening," Merav told the Today programme earlier. "I told Menashe something was wrong."

Of the attackers, Menashe said: "I don't know if we can call these kinds of people humans. Humans do not do these kind of things to boys and girls that only wanted to celebrate.

"They will not be forgiven for what they've done."

'Hamas is a terrorist organization and a political force at the same time.

To achieve its goals -
declared as an independent Palestinian state and the fight for the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people -
it uses violence and terror as tools. The path chosen by the organization's leadership is military confrontation.

Who are these leaders?

The political leader is Ismail Haniya. But the second wing of Hamas, apart from the political one, is the military wing, i.e. the al-Qassam brigades.
Their mastermind is Mohammed Deif, who is behind Hamas' current operations. This is a man with a long career in Hamas - he organized kidnappings and suicide attacks on Israeli buses.

Deif survived several assassination attempts. In 2014, an Israeli airstrike killed his wife and two children. Israel never managed to get him.
He was the prototype for the characters of Palestinian commanders in the series "Fauda".
He is responsible for the current confrontation with Israel."

Gazan mother: Where to hide when death comes from the sky?

Hanan Razek and Mohamed Ibrahim
BBC Arabic

Reuters

Nadiya is the mother of a five-year-old boy and three-month old baby in Gaza.

She says the only way to calm the older boy, as Israeli air strikes land, is to tell him "the sound of an explosion comes a few moments after it actually happens".

It is the kind of knowledge no five-year-old should be expected to understand, but for Nadiya, it is the best way to cope.

On Monday night, Nadiya says she heard her neighbours running down the stairs shouting: "Evacuate! Evacuate!"

The young mother hesitated for a couple of seconds. Then she burst into tears.

Eventually, she left the building with her two children, but said she couldn't recognise the neighbourhood as buildings around her block had been levelled.

She's now trying to make her way to her parents' house. But, she says: "Where can you hide when death is coming from the sky?"
