Blinken says US working to establish 'safe areas' in Gaza
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has just held a joint press conference with Qatari prime minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, in Doha.Here are some of the key points:
- Blinken said he had asked Israel to take "every possible precaution" to avoid Gaza civilian deaths, and recognised that many families in Gaza are suffering "through no fault of their own"
- He confirmed that the US was involved in discussions with Israel and "leading international organisations" to establish "safe areas" in Gaza
- Blinked said details would emerge "in the coming days"
- Efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza are "complicated" by the fact that Hamas are continuing to "use innocent civilians as human shields"
- The US government and Qatar are working to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken talked with Israel's government about the need to establish safe areas for civilians in Gaza.
This is what a state department official told journalists earlier today before travelling to Qatar, the second stop on Blinken’s Middle East trip.
He had little to say about UN warnings that a 24-hour evacuation order for northern Gaza issued by the Israel Defense Forces would have disastrous consequences.
But he underlined that the administration was working with the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to create these safe locations, possibly in the south of the strip.
Blinken’s message has been laser focused on rock solid support for Israel, and on restraint in the region – a warning for other armed Iran-backed groups not to join the fight.
In Qatar he’s also discussing attempts to rescue hostages held in Gaza. Doha has contacts with Hamas and has taken the lead in trying to facilitate their release.
Critics have denounced America’s unwavering support for Israel as a green light for forceful Israeli military actions in Gaza.

Over the past day, the IDF conducted raids in the territory of the Gaza Strip in an effort to eliminate the threat of terrorists and weapons in the area and locate hostages.
IDF soldiers searched and collected evidence that would assist in the effort to locate hostages.
In addition, IDF soldiers thwarted terrorist cells and infrastructure located in the area, including a Hamas cell that fired anti-tank missiles toward Israeli territory.
In addition, the IAF continued its strikes on Hamas terror targets in the Gaza Strip, as well as strikes on anti-tank missile launchers immediately after they attacked Israel.

I see the conspiracy theories are making their way about. Israel did NOT allow this to happen. They simply cannot afford to allow wars "to happen."
Of course there were security failures and there were warnings that may have been 'geo-misplaced' by Israel. I use the word geo-misplaced as I suspect Israel may have thought the threat was to the west bank area where the population of Jewish persons is more highly concentrated than the Kibbutz' dotting the south and bordering the Gaza.
I'll toss in this link for a good read. Hindsight is always 20/20, but this piece was published in August.
The answers to just "what went wrong" to allow this to ever happen in the first place will be forthcoming at some point in the future. It will studied to death so that it is never allowed to happen again.
But that time is not now. Israel has a war to fight right now. But I guarantee Israel will learn the lessons of what happened with this failure of security.
The simply HAVE TO learn those lessons because the minute they ever lose a war --- they will cease to exist. That is their reality. Every. Single. Day. They did not "allow" this war "to happen".

Egypt has closed the borders to Gazans (nobody besides the US wants refugees anymore).
Furthermore, armed Palestinian groups have pulled enough stunts in neighboring countries over the generations to cause local welcome mats to get rolled up- even before these countries got tired of refugees.
Sure, Gazan civilians showing up at the Egyptian crossing with enough cash or with an Egyptian wife, or both, will find the welcome mat unrolled and be allowed in.
But... the vast majority of Gazans in the worlds biggest human corral have no where to flee to.

Israel “has the right to defend itself,” he said, but “this right must be exercised in compliance with” international humanitarian law.

I thought I read that the reason Israel was caught off guard is because Hamas used old fashioned (for lack of a better word) ways to launch this attack - meaning they did not use technology and flew under the radar. Did anyone else read that?

The Hamas terror group publishes propaganda footage showing its members holding young Israeli children and babies in a kibbutz in southern Israel last weekend, in an apparent attempt to downplay its murderous attack.
The video shows terrorists taking a number of small children and infants out of homes in Kibbutz Holit.
One clip shows the terrorists giving a child a glass of water to drink, and another clip shows terrorists rocking a baby in a stroller.
Parents of the children are nowhere to be seen.
There is evidence showing that Palestinian terrorists murdered several young children during its attack last weekend.

BBm: I was also wondering about cruise ships maybe being a way to move more people out of the way. On Saturday, there were two cruise ships at the port when the attack came. They waited for their passengers to return before leaving. One ship had to leave without all of their passengers. I would hate to be on such a big target but it could be a way to move some of the Palestinians to leave. Maybe Egypt would let them dock? IDK but just a thought.

The element of surprise is used, and in this particular case it is unlikely.
