Pete Davidson opening SNL last night.
He lost his father in 9/11. I think he was a good choice for this.

Normally, when aid is provided to civilians, I would expect the government to distribute the aid. Since the government is Hamas, how is that going to work in Gaza?
I suspect that UNRWA will take it on. I do believe they've relocated to an airstrip in Southern Gaza with their operational and humanitarian staff.

UNRWA: United Nations Relief & Works Agency (for Palestine Refugees in the near east).

Will the aid workers be involved from the various organizations maybe?
That is typically how aid is distributed internationally. (Iirc)

In case you missed it:

(18:05) Shots were fired toward an IDF tank and posts—along the Lebanese border. The IDF responded with artillery fire.

(19:49-21:04) Multiple sirens sounded in the areas surrounding Gaza.

(21:42) Sirens sounded in the city of Tel Aviv.

For 10 days straight, the State of Israel has felt, heard, and personally been attacked by Hamas’ terrorism.

Israel has asked the US for $10 billion in emergency military aid — report

Israel has asked the United States for $10 billion in emergency military aid, The New York Times reports, citing three officials familiar with the request.

The aid package is currently being put together by Congress in coordination with the White House and will also include funds for Ukraine, Taiwan and the US-Mexico border, according to NYT.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said during a visit to Tel Aviv on Sunday that US lawmakers have discussed providing Israel with replacement ammunition for the Iron Dome missile defense system, precision-guided bombs, JDAM kits to turn standard bombs into precision munitions and 155-millimeter ammunition.

IMO, it’s just part of the Hamas plan. Pretend to WANT to release the hostages but it’s too dangerous so people will force a cease fire which leaves Hamas free to continue to operate.
I thought it meant: release the hostages during shelling and say "sorry not our fault they were not safe"

To be frank, and I hope I am so very wrong, I do not believe many of these hostages are still living. It’s all lies.

Eta: i do not trust Hamas in any sort of hostage exchange. Or as far as I could throw ‘em.

House Foreign Affairs Committee drafting legislation authorizing military force if Israel-Hamas conflict expands

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul appears on CNN on Monday, October 16. CNN

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul told CNN Monday that his committee is drafting legislation “in the event it’s necessary” to authorize US military force if the current conflict between Israel and Hamas broadens into a wider proxy war with Iran.

"I hope I never have to mark this bill up. But we have a situation in the Middle East that’s growing day by day with intensity and if Hezbollah gets involved, Iran has already threatened if Gaza is, you know, if Israel goes, you know, if IDF (Israel Defense Forces) goes into Gaza that they're gonna come out,” he told CNN.

The revelation that his committee is crafting draft legislation — known as an Authorization of Use for Military Force — comes as President Joe Biden prepares to travel to the region later this week and is the latest indication that the US government is deeply concerned over how the current crisis could broaden in a way that might require a US military response.

The US military ordered a second carrier strike group to the Eastern Mediterranean as well as Air Force fighter jets to the region as part of US efforts to deter Iran and its proxies from expanding the conflict.

McCaul was careful not to say whether the White House had specifically asked for such an authorization, telling reporters: "I don't want to confirm that. It's just that there is concern that — we, I'm currently, we're currently drafting one in the event it's necessary."

When asked by CNN what this potential authorization might entail, McCaul said: “I'd prefer not to put Iran as a nation state in there. It would be more Iran proxies, you know, like Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran-backed Shi’ia militias, but if Iran gets directly involved, then we would have to put them on the list."

In an interview later with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, McCaul said he would want any potential authorization to have the full support of the American people.

“I’m currently preparing a draft of that in the event it is called upon and is necessary, but most importantly is supported by the American people,” he said.

100 trucks of humanitarian aid said waiting at Egypt border to be allowed into Gaza

More than 100 trucks full of humanitarian aid are currently at the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing, waiting to be allowed into Gaza, Al Arabiya reports.

The network says the trucks are slated to be allowed in at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

However, there have been a number of reports in recent days about Rafah reopening that proved to be false.

Israel has bombed the crossing several times in order to prevent the entry of humanitarian aid from reaching Gazans in order to further squeeze the enclave’s Hamas rulers following their October 7 onslaught.

Biden visiting Israel: US in diplomatic dash to contain conflict

Barbara Plett Usher
US State Department correspondent, BBC News

With Biden headed to Israel on Wednesday to join US state secretary Antony Blinken, it's a strong show of American support for the country. But the US is also trying to mitigate the civilian casualties in Gaza.

Some analysts questioned whether Biden's trip to show solidarity with Israel could be seen as provocative. But others suggest it might help to underline a message of restraint.

"He's a very visceral politician," says Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East programme at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank. "It may be that he feels that if you're going to push the Israelis, you can't push them until you've already made clear that you care."

Where the Biden administration will not push the Israelis is on their assessment of Hamas.

US officials have adopted Israeli language that compares the Palestinian movement to the Islamic State group, saying it was an attack of "sheer evil" unrelated to legitimate frustrations about decades of Israeli occupation and the grinding misery of its 16-year blockade of Gaza.

But an analyst, who described this US policy as "strategic neglect", said this ignores a chorus of warnings in the year leading up to the attack about an impending "explosion" in the Palestinian territories.

What's the latest?

It's just gone 05:00 in the morning in Israel and Gaza, and here are the latest developments on the ground:
  • US president Joe Biden will visit Israel on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced from Israel. Blinken said that Biden's visit was coming at a critical moment for Israel, the region and the entire world
  • Biden will coordinate with Israeli partners to secure the release of hostages taken by Hamas, and hear from Israel how it would conduct its operations in a way that minimises civilian casualties and allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza in a way that does not benefit Hamas
  • Diplomatic talks are also continuing about the possibility of reopening the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza so that aid can be brought into Gaza and foreign nationals can be evacuated
  • A video analysed by BBC Verify appears to show an air strike at the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian side of the border, creating a large explosion
  • Hamas has released a video showing one of the people it took hostage during the assault on Israel that triggered the conflict. It shows a young woman speaking Hebrew who identifies herself as 21-year-old Maya Shem
  • Israel has confirmed at least 199 hostages were taken to Gaza. A spokesperson for the military wing of Hamas says there are "about 200 to 250" Israeli captives being held in the enclave
  • The UN says around one million Palestinians who've fled their homes are in urgent need of food, water and fuel
  • Russia’s draft humanitarian resolution on Israel and Gaza failed to pass the UN Security Council with Western nations including the US and UK voting against it because it failed to condemn Hamas

It’s more important than ever for New York to show up in support of Israel.

Tomorrow I’m traveling to Israel for a solidarity mission to meet with diplomatic leaders & communities devastated by the horrific Hamas attacks.

New York will always stand with Israel.

Right. Just like they were slated for 9 am Monday. This is utter mularkey.

I sit in my comfy home, with a nice dinner, internet, and all the comforts. And I STILL feel impatience and desperation.

I cannot imagine how I would feel actually suffering through this. In this day and age and we still cannot get potable water to civilians in a war zone. Smdh.

She has an interesting perspective with the BBC, but it sounds more like an opinion piece than journalism, IMO.

Israel and Palestine have both signed on to Geneva Convention II (with reservations for Israel).

In 2014 Palestine also signed on to Convention IV (Protection to Civilian persons in Time of War) and the Protocols

... So if anyone wants to play the war crimes card as to the deliberate targeting of the civilian population, the fact there are hostages in the Gaza in the first place (or were targetted before being taken to Gaza - and footage shows that "non-combattant" (??) Palestinians also crossed into Israel after Hamas terrorists and also looted and took back hostages of their own ... footage of that linked in here today by me already) ...

I thought that the Israeli government said that Hamas was blocking the entry of aid into Gaza at the border with Egypt. This report says that Israel was blocking entry. Wonder if that is accurate.

I know-after the brutal killings- why would they keep anyone safe? I thought very briefly at the beginning that they wanted hostages to trade for prisoners, but after the carnage, I thought no one will negotiate with them. IMO.
