Live updates: Israel-Hamas war rages as crisis in Gaza deepens (cnn.com)

Israeli airstrikes on Rafah kill at least 28 people, Palestinian interior ministry says

Israeli airstrikes killed at least 28 people in Rafah early Tuesday, according to a statement by the Palestinian Ministry of Interior.

Another statement from the ministry said airstrikes also killed and injured people in Khan Yunis, but did not provide an exact number.

A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would not confirm whether they launched strikes in those areas.

IDF international spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told CNN’s John Vause he was “not aware of any strikes specifically in those areas but they could have happened.”

“The combat operations continue. We continue to hunt Hamas operatives to attempt to degrade their military capabilities,” Conricus said.

He said the hunt for Hamas targets is part of “the war that has been forced upon us” and Israel will continue military operations “according to the law of armed conflict and of course to minimize civilian casualties.

On top of all the meetings between countries leaders, there is a Five Eyes summit going on in San Francisco right now. our head of ASIO is there. He is asking for all Aussies to do their best to scale back any tension here.

The head of Australia’s spy agency has warned about the potential for violence here because of heightened tensions sparked by the Israel-Palestine conflict.

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess is in San Francisco for a summit of the Five Eyes alliance – an intelligence cooperative comprising Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Mr Burgess appeared at a joint press conference with the FBI’s Director Christopher Wray before the meeting, at which he said ASIO anticipates “spontaneous violence”.

omg just seeing this!

Eta omg…this reminds me of ISIS. When they would release those awful beheading videos, but released well after they were actually taken, trying to manipulate the whole timeline.

I do not think that video is recent!!!!! Look how fresh her hair and makeup are, I mean none of us would look like that after being held captive all this time.

I bet this was taken right after her abduction!!!!!!

I am calling Bull on this video!!!!

Eta: @PommyMommy , @JennieM , @Momoffourboys , anyone, have you guys posted about this today already? Can you please direct me there, provide an update, I don’t want to rehash and would love to find out ASAP everything on this video and hostage if you guys have already talked about it, meanwhile will try to catch up and find additional reference.

HOSTAGE VIDEO!!

Qmfr, my mind is going to the, I know, “unrealistic” movie “Taken.”

Here’s an alternate scenario, which I don’t think is the case, I haven’t even begun to watch/analyze/research this hostage and video yet, but there’s a scene from “Taken” where the abducted girls are dressed up for the Shieks, clients…so maybe they may keep the girls clean, presentable, make them dress up for the men…in the movie they dressed them up like exotic belly dancers, veil, iirc, I know that’s a movie, but you get my drift. I’m sure the dressing up is similar in some sex trafficking situations. She would have to have her purse/bags with her or they would have to provide the makeup, and I’m not sure yet when Hamas is claiming this is taken because I have not dived into it yet.

What is she wearing, is she seen in other videos from Oct 7 matching the same outfit…they plan and know all these videos will be analyzed (I just saw a whole thing about this in CSAM rings), anyway again, my preliminary guess without really watching yet or knowing anything about her/this (I have to take all this in stages/doses), is that this is taken immediately after the abduction. But IF they’re claiming this is a new video, wouldn’t this be obvious? I mean, wouldn’t they realize her makeup, etc…

Ok watching this now, Lester may have the lowdown, also talking about Hamas’ possible talks/conditions to release some “non-Israeli” hostages, sorry if this info is already posted:

Hostage is “21-year old Maya Shem (sp)”

Video: Hamas releases first images of captured Israeli hostage

In the video, 21-year-old Mia Shem appears receiving medical care; she is the granddaughter of Chileans

“Mia Shem, 21 years old, Israeli and granddaughter of Chileans, is the first hostage of the Palestinian group Hamas to have her image released. In a video published by the group, this Monday (16), the young woman appears receiving medical care and gives information about her health and location.

“My name is Maya Sham, I’m 21 years old and from Shoham. I'm currently in Gaza . Early Saturday morning I was returning from a party in the Sderot area. I was seriously injured in the hand. They took me to Gaza and took me to the hospital for three hours. They took care of me, providing meds,” says Shem.

In the video, which is just over a minute long, only Shem speaks. No member of the group appears and, in addition to the possible hostage, it is only possible to notice the hand of another person tending to the Israeli's wounds.

“I just ask that you take me home as quickly as possible to my family, my parents, my brothers. Please let me get out of here as quickly as possible”, said the young woman in the video, which was reported by the ANSA agency.”

Make up looks less perfect in this medical picture, she is stunningly gorgeous, maybe I’m wrong about the makeup thing. Maybe there is lapse between her speaking and this photo, watching full video now.

Video of her receiving “medical care” here.

Yeah it’s all suspicious to me, the timing, order, her appearance, jmo. I think these are earlier videos, I could be totally wrong.

See hostage negotiator at 3:28, he negotiated the release of that man taken hostage by Hamas years and years ago, says he has been in contact with Hamas every day since attack. Has insightful comments, says Israel’s top priority is removing Hamas’ ability to govern, and window to negotiate closes when Israel goes in, and sadly hostages may end up being sacrificed for Israel to take Hamas out.

There’s a man that was held by Hamas and released after five years after the trading of 1000 Palestinian prisoners, iirc. I saw the video of his release and he was soooo thin, like bones, but of course looked so happy to finally be free.
...
I’ll find the video on him I saw and add as eta.
RSBM

Gilad Shalit

A video that explains the negotiations undertaken to get him home. He was exchanged for 1027 prisoners. The number of prisoners that Hamas managed to get back in return for releasing Gilad, is the very reason that Hamas is now stating, "We have enough to free all Palestinian prisoners" (referring to the hostages they now hold **Note that this is a War Crime).

South First Responders

Warning: Graphic Footage/Scenes

We continue to hear that Hamas leaders are appearing on television with the audacity to claim they did not target or kill civilians. We will continue to post evidence that we obtain that the attack on October 7 was premeditated, intentional, mass murder targeting civilians.

This morning we are publishing additional footage obtained and analyzed from security cameras, that show the systematic massacre by Hamas terrorists targeting motorists on southern Israel, as they made their way to their targets.

We note that when our guys arrived on scene, they saw numerous destroyed vehicles from this intersection that are not in the shot. Images will be posted soon from what they found at this intersection.

there are pictures of people waiting at the Rafah crossing.... and bomb pictures... (unless we later find that the pictures are from three yrs ago).

and NPR says that there have been tunnels around the crossing as well

Here's what I'm getting out of everything that I'm hearing/seeing:

IDF bombed/destroyed tunnel networks running next to the border (and crossing) at Rafah back on 10 October (that's the previously published footage that you're seeing taken from the crossing with the bomb going off in the background).

Apparently, that bombing destroyed or damaged the road on the Gaza side of the crossing which impedes the passing through it of vehicles according to the Palestnian Border Crossing Authority.

Articles here:

None of which explains why, more recently, the Egytians were placing cement barriers in front of the gate or why persons are not being allowed to cross through on foot.

A Palestinian border official told CNN that Egypt had blocked the gates of the crossing with concrete slabs. Egypt has denied reports that it has closed its side of the crossing, and said the Palestinian side had been damaged by repeated Israeli airstrikes rendered the roads “inoperable”.
Article with photos taken from Egyptian side of concrete barriers being placed on the Gaza side.

''Oct 17, 2023
The mother of an Israeli woman kidnapped by Hamas militants last week made an emotional appeal on Tuesday for the release of her daughter. The family of 21-year-old Mia Schem spoke to journalists after Hamas’s military wing released a video showing Schem having her arm wrapped with bandages. The family confirmed it was Schem who was taken from the Reim kibbutz, where she was attending the Supernova festival. 'I didn't know if she's dead or alive until yesterday,' said her mother Keren Schem. The Israeli military said on Monday at least 199 hostages were taken into Gaza, more than previously estimated. Hamas said it was holding 200 to 250 hostages Hamas releases video of French-Israeli woman held hostage''

Well, that makes perfect sense. /s

Some background on the Rafah Crossing.

In 2017, Hamas ceded control of the Gazan side of the Rafah Crossing to the Palestinian Authority. Egypt controls the Egyptian side of the crossing of course.

Today, I'm unsure whether Hamas has taken control of the crossing due to the fighting or whether the PA still controls it. I note that previous articles are citing "Palestinian Border Authority" as being in control of access to the gate from the Gazan side. Not Israel - so I wouldn't be surprised if we learn that Hamas is playing some dirty tricks there either as they've already been caught impeding movement south of their own citizens trying to evacute etc.

It does to those who believe that any infidel is a legitimate target.

Regarding the /s ... someone really needs to invent a font --- [sarcasm]abc[/sarcasm] that we can use in posts; perhaps some 'dripping' letters.

This article says Israel has hit the crossing at least 4 times in the last 10 days. I would say that there is something about the crossing that Israel knows about. And it won't be the humanitarian aid or the people wanting to leave. They are probably trying to make it a safer zone due to some known (to their intelligence) threat. imo

Overnight Israeli air raids on Khan Younis, Rafah and Deir el-Balah, where Israel had ordered civilians to seek refuge, killed at least 71 people. Israel has hit the Rafah crossing at least four times over the past 10 days.

'Members of Mia Schem's family and representatives of the families of the abducted and missing persons held by Hamas militants in Gaza hold a press conference following the release of a video by Hamas, in which the 21-year-old Israeli woman is seen. Schem was among the roughly 200 people kidnapped in Hamas' cross-border attack on Oct. 7. in Tel Aviv, Israel, Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023. (AP Photo/Ohad Zwigenberg)'

''JERUSALEM (AP) — The mother of a young Israeli woman held by Hamas appealed for her release on Tuesday, calling the seizure of some 200 hostages by the Palestinian militant group “a crime against humanity.”
A day earlier, Hamas’ military wing released a video showing a dazed Mia Schem, 21, having her arm wrapped with bandages. It was the first sign of life from any of the hostages since Gaza-based gunmen smashed through border fortifications on Oct. 7, killing more than 1,400 people in Israel.
“I didn’t know if she’s dead or alive until yesterday,” her mother, Keren Schem, said at a news conference. “All I knew is that she might be kidnapped. I’m begging the world to bring my baby back home. She only went to a party, to a festival party to have some fun. Now she’s in Gaza.”

''The Israeli military said Schem’s family was told of her abduction last week, and officials dismissed the video as propaganda designed to make Hamas look humane. Israeli officials have vowed to maintain a siege on Gaza until the hostages are released.

Mia Schem has dual nationality with France, and on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron decried the hostage-taking.''

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT

All those who question the unimaginable savagery of the Hamas attack against Israel must read the words of these forensic scientists struggling to identify the 297 bodies so brutalised as to be unrecognisable

The charred remains were so disfigured that at first they did not realise it was two people.

But when pathologists gently began to examine, they could see the bodies were those of an adult and a child. And they were hugging tightly.

That is how it had ended for them, trapped in a room as Hamas terrorists set fire to their home. As the horror of burning to death came to them, the adult had nothing left to offer but to hold that terrified child in their arms.

And as unbearable as that is, it is by no means an isolated case here at Israel's National Centre of Forensic Medicine, where the bodies of the victims of the Hamas attack are being identified. Scientists charged with this grim task told me it is common to have to carefully separate the fused remains of two helpless people who, in their final moments, had found all they could do was embrace in death.

No wonder several professional pathologists broke down in tears yesterday as they tried to explain their vital work to me.
