An anti-war protest in Athens, Greece, on Wednesday drew thousands of demonstrators calling for a halt to the violence between Israel and Hamas.

Police said about 10,000 people responded to a call by Communist-affiliated labour
unions to gather in solidarity with the Palestinian people, AFP reported.

The protest culminated at the Israeli embassy, where a cordon of riot police fired tear gas at protesters.

About 100 people gathered earlier in the day outside the embassy for a pro-Israel protest organised by the Israel-Greece Friendship Association, the first such gathering since the conflict began, the news agency said.

Those protestors had already dispersed by the time the pro-Palestinian demonstrators arrived.

European Union asks social media platforms to prepare for risk of "live-streaming executions" by Hamas

From CNN's Sharon Braithwaite

The European Union's (EU) commissioner for internal market Thierry Breton said on Wednesday that he had asked social media platforms to prepare for the risk of "live-streaming executions" by Hamas.

"As part of our interactions with the platforms, we have specifically asked them to prepare for the risk of live-streaming executions by Hamas – an imminent risk from which we must protect our citizens – and we are seeking assurances that the platforms are well prepared for such possibilities," Breton said in a speech at the European Parliament.

A spokesperson of Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades said last week that Hamas will start executing civilian hostages and broadcasting it if Israel targets people in Gaza without warning.

“We declare that we will respond to any targeting of our people who are safe in their homes without warning, with the execution of our civilian hostages, and we will broadcast it with audio and video,” Abu Obaida said in an audio statement aired on Al Jazeera Arabic on Monday.

On said Wednesday, Breton said, "But let's be clear about this approach. By pointing out the responsibility of platforms — and their CEOs — in the management (or lack of management) of illegal content distributed on their platforms, we are sending out a very explicit signal: things have changed in Europe. There is a law. It must be respected."

"And let me be very clear: the way in which the platforms respond to the Commission's questions will be included in our files on their compliance with their obligations under the DSA," he concluded.

The Digital Services Act (DSA) is a regulation in the EU law that aims to create a safer digital space where the fundamental rights of users are protected and to establish a level playing field for businesses.

What's been happening?

It's coming up to 23:00 in Israel and Gaza and it's been another busy day. In case you are just joining us or need a recap, here's what has been happening today:

  • Israel has said it "would not thwart" the delivery of food, water and medicine from Egypt for civilians in Gaza as long as this aid did not reach Hamas
  • During a visit to Israel, US President Joe Biden backed Israel's claim that it had nothing to do with the explosion at the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza yesterday, saying it was supported by "data" he had seen from the US defence department
  • Arab states continue to blame Israel for the explosion which left at least 471 people dead
  • The United States vetoed a UN Security Council vote calling for humanitarian pauses in Gaza, a move that was condemned by other members including Russia, China and the UAE
  • Pro-Palestinian protests have continued around the Middle East, including in the West Bank, Lebanon and Jordan

Slightly off-topic. But why do illegal Israeli settlements on the West Bank look like such wonderful places to live?!

Spacious detached houses, front & back gardens, driveways, freshly tarmac'd roads with no potholes, lovely, quiet cul-de-sacs. How can such wholesome suburban loveliness be a major breach of international law?

That is really good work by Dan Abrams. And he is right on the money. Immediately BBC reported it was IDF and actually left that article up until recently, despite pretty good evidence against it. And now we see riots in areas because people believed these stories that they thought were legit because they came from "legit" news sources.
Yes BBC's has removed theirs but others are still there
go to 1 min 40 secs

eg here's
Official Twitter account for @MSNBC's #DeadlineWH with an NBC reporter - Raf Sanchez - still speculating that ' Israeli evidence not backing up.. this kind of death toll is not normally what you associate with Palestinian rockets

I have more, I bookmarked them all but I don't want to derail the thread by posting all of them

'ZAKA emergency volunteers have uncovered the burnt body of a boy roughly 5 years old in the attic of a home on the southern border. The building was apparently set on fire by Hamas terrorists during their October 7 onslaught.'

( Have tried the link, no other details given)

The bodies of Erick Peretz and his daughter Ruth who has cerebral palsy, were found today. They have been missing since the Nova music festival on October 7th. They were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists. May their memory be a blessing.

US language upsets close Arab ally UAE

Barbara Plett Usher
US State Department correspondent

The Biden administration’s attempt to link the Hamas with the Islamic State Group has been implicitly criticized by a close Arab ally.

The US has adopted Israeli language calling the Hamas rampage “ISIS-like”.

They suggest the "sheer evil" of the attack means it is unrelated to longstanding frustrations about Israeli occupation and the grinding misery of the 16-year blockade of Gaza, also imposed by Egypt.

But, the UN ambassador of the UAE, Luna Nusseibeh, said it is important not to lose sight of the context of the crisis, “however convenient.”

She was speaking after the Americans vetoed a UN resolution to establish humanitarian pauses in the war because it didn’t mention Israel’s right to self-defence.

The UAE is one of only two Arab states to have explicitly condemned the Hamas attack, and Nusseibeh said it was responsible for “sparking this latest fire.”

But, “the kindling was already there,” she said, “fuelled by decades of violent dehumanisation, dispossession and despair".

She warned security council members not to disregard “the longest going occupation in the world today of a people who do not wish to be ruled and have been let down again, and again, and again by all of us.”

UK advises against all travel to Lebanon

Britain's Foreign Office is advising against all travel to "the whole of Lebanon" due the conflict in the region.

"Events in Lebanon are fast moving. The situation has potential to deteriorate quickly and with no warning," says the government's website.

It encourages British nationals currently in Lebanon to leave the country now "while commercial options remain available".

Incendiary comments/views help no one, and as we do not yet know the Truth, no US representative should comment/place blame. This will inflame an already on fire situation. Anyone in any government position should know better, and his comment should be removed.
The comments and placed blame happened world-wide last night. THAT blew up this situation - did you see the protests in Arab nations and at Jewish & US embassies that broke out immediately after that blame-lying occured? The world doesn't get a do-over today because THOSE talking heads and heads of state were wrong.

Too bad that the world only thinks "we shouldn't speak or place blame" when they think Israel has committed the atrocity. No one had issues blaming Israel ---- and obviously some still don't because they can't even admit that the evidence shows Israel did not do this.

Wheres the calls for all the videos, news articles and protestors "to remove" their rhetoric and to get back to their homes from the embassy ... until "we know the truth?"

The world has quite the double standard for Israel vice everyone else.

What I don't understand is GB holds FB and X accountable for false reporting, but the BBC is allowed to report false narrative. Moo

UN spokesperson: "No update on if and when" Rafah crossing will open to supply aid into Gaza via Egypt

There is “no update on if and when” the Rafah border crossing will open for the passage of humanitarian aid from Egypt into Gaza, the UN Secretary General's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said Wednesday.

Israel’s Prime Minister’s office confirmed earlier Israel will not block humanitarian aid going into Gaza through the crossing.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Wednesday blamed Israeli shelling for preventing the vital crossing from re-opening.

"Egypt did not close the Rafah crossing since the outbreak of the crisis, but that Israeli shelling from the Palestinian side prevented it from opening,” Sisi said at a news conference, speaking alongside visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

El-Sisi also called on the international community to "allow humanitarian assistance to enter the Gaza Strip."

Intermittent explosions were witnessed throughout Wednesday on the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing, according to a CNN stringer on the Egyptian side of the border.

Aid convoy drivers and volunteers have been waiting at the Egyptian side of the crossing since the early hours of Tuesday.

ITA. I applaud Abrams and Mediaite for stating the obvious. They are now calling out U.S. politicians for trying to fuel the rhetoric fire with misinformation.

“Israel just bombed the Baptist Hospital killing 500 Palestinians (doctors, children, patients) just like that,” wrote Tlaib on X. “@POTUS this is what happens when you refuse to facilitate a ceasefire & help de-escalate. Your war and destruction only approach has opened my eyes and many Palestinian Americans and Muslims Americans like me. We will remember where you stood.”

Hundreds hold prayer vigil outside Downing Street

1697661188362.jpeg

Reuters
Hundreds of protesters have attended a vigil outside Downing Street for victims of the deadly blast at the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza.

As we've been reporting, on a visit to Israel, US President Joe Biden backed Israel's strong denial of any involvement in an explosion at a hospital in Gaza, saying it was supported by "data" he had seen from the US defence department.

Hamas have blamed the explosion, which killed hundreds of civilians, on an Israeli air strike.

Braving heavy rain on Wednesday evening, protesters gathered in Westminster holding signs which read "stop the massacre" and "stop bombing Gaza".

Prayers were then held in Arabic, with attendees laying out plastic sheets on the ground to pray on.
