I don’t like it either, but if he doesn’t go it will be “Sleepy Joe hates the Jews”. And he does not. At all. Not that it matters to some talking heads.

People suck so bad.
I don't know. I don't care for the current administration at all, but I don't believe it's safe for our president to go there.

Protests in Libya over Gaza hospital strike

AFP: Several hundred people protested in Tripoli and other Libyan cities late Tuesday over the deadly blast at a Gaza hospital, according to AFP journalists.

In Tripoli, hundreds of demonstrators of all ages, brandishing Palestinian flags and some covering their faces with Palestinian keffiyehs, crisscrossed the streets of the city centre before converging on Martyrs’ Square.

They chanted slogans of support for the residents of Gaza and denounced the strike by the “Zionist enemy”.

“We give our blood and our souls for Gaza,” they chanted in Tripoli and similarly in Misrata, a city 200 kilometres (120 miles) west of the capital.

The Israeli army said the strike was a rocket misfired by the Gaza-based militant group Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas.

Earlier, Abdulhamid Dbeibah, the prime minister of Libya’s Tripoli-based internationally-recognised government, condemned the hospital strike, calling it a “despicable crime”.

“We denounce this crime which exceeded all limits, and I call on all countries of the world and the great powers in particular, to put an end to these crimes and to open corridors to bring humanitarian aid into the besieged sector,” he said on X, formerly Twitter, late Tuesday.

“Targeting medical and civilian facilities is a war crime. This aggression must stop,” he said.

I've never heard of a world leader flying into a foreign war zone.
Well, they are allies ...

And Israel sure as heck could use a true friend showing direct support right now ...

JMO, but everyone else scurried right quick because they couldn't wait for the facts to come in before hurling all the usual accusations against Israel.

Entire neighbourhoods have been razed in Gaza and survivors are left with dwindling supplies of food, water and fuel.

The health ministry in Gaza said hospitals are at breaking point, with more than 30,000 people taking shelter at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City alone.

It said it was “extremely concerned” about disease outbreaks due to poor water supply and sanitation.

“There are corpses in the streets. Buildings are crashing down on their inhabitants,” Jamil Abdullah, a Palestinian-Swede, who was hoping to flee the blockaded enclave, told AFP.

“The smell of the dead is everywhere.”

Japan’s government has been criticised over its evacuation of citizens from Israel, after just eight people joined a flight that flew only as far as Dubai, with passengers charged a fee for boarding the plane.

Social media users and opposition politicians contrasted Sunday’s evacuation on a government-chartered commercial plane with an earlier flight on a South Korean military aircraft, whose passengers included dozens of Japanese nationals.

Passengers on the Japanese flight were charged ¥30,000 each (US$200), sparking anger on X, formerly known as Twitter, with some users accusing the government of being “stingy”. The South Korean government, by contrast, did not charge 51 Japanese nationals who boarded its flight – along with 163 South Koreans and six Singaporeans – from Israel to Seoul on Saturday.

Kenta Izumi, head of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic party, was similarly critical: “A Japanese government-chartered plane arrived in Dubai with eight Japanese on board for a fee,” he wrote on X. “The South Korean government transport plane carried not only South Koreans but also 51 Japanese, and arrived in South Korea, and for free.”

The Mainichi Shimbun said the tiny number of people aboard the Japanese flight had taken foreign ministry officials by surprise. “We hurried to avoid Japan being accused of responding too slowly, but with only eight people on board, it backfired on us,” the newspaper quoted a source close to the ministry as saying.

But another official defended the evacuation, saying the quickly changing situation in the Middle East meant the government wanted to fly its citizens out of Israel as soon as possible.

“The purpose of evacuating Japanese nationals was to get them out of the country, not to get them back to Japan,” the official told the Mainichi. “We are glad we did it, even with eight people.”

About 1,200 Japanese nationals were in Israel and Palestinian territoriesbefore the conflict broke out, and 1,000 were still there as of Saturday, the Kyodo news agency reported.

That was before the situation exploded into surrounding countries.
I've never heard of a world leader flying into a foreign war zone.
Not to pick nits, but you originally said the bottom quote.

Nothing about foreign war zones where the situ had expanded into neighboring countries. Which still does not exclude the visits of many former (and present) world leaders.

Total opinion this visit by Biden is going to backfire and his administration is putting him in harms way. I don't like it at all.

Hey bestill. :)

IMO, Biden HAS to go and show strong support for Israel. Biden, or no Biden, whoeeeeeever was President at this time, would have to do it, jmo. It goes back to years and years of diplomatic/political factors.

I think he also wants to do it, knows it’s the right thing, and of course even if he refused, which I doubt he would ever do anyway, he would be called a pansy and everything else.

Eta: Also, this is a veryyyy serious situation with global ramifications. He HAS to go. It is his job.

Jmo.

I don’t like it either and feel uneasy. Why does he have to go in person?

Hopefully he will be safe. I think he’ll be ok (knock on wood). :)

Here’s another thing that I think really needs to be said.

The United States is/is supposed to be a leader of the FREE WORLD.

And these atrocities by terrorists need to be very strongly reprimanded by the United States. This is a modern-day Holocaust, and again a verrrrrry dangerous and turbulent situation with seeeeerious global ramifications. Honestly, I would NOT be happy if he did not go.

Reporters are going, service members may go, Senators go, humanitarian people go, others go…yes the President of the United States is of course a high target, but he will also have the best protection.

There just is no other option. IMO this situation is sooooo out of hand, he HAS to go and IT IS HIS JOB.

We are on the brink of WW3 for goodness sakes.

JMO.

Eta:

I look back on the Holocaust and ask how that was allowed to happen for so long. How did more people not….anyway, that’s another subject. But let’s fast forward to the future. Because hindsight is always 20/20. A situation was brewing and the President didn’t go and show a STRONG stance AND STAND UP TO THIS BS?!

You’re exactly right. Even though I’m not his biggest fan, I worry for his safety and that he is target, but he has to go you are right.

ISRAEL–HAMAS WAR (IRAN UPDATE)

Oct 17, 2023 - ISW Press

This page collects the refocused Iran Updates that ISW began publishing on October 7, 2023. ISW and The Critical Threats Project (CTP) have refocused the Iran Update to cover the Israel–Hamas war. The new sections address developments in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria, as well as noteworthy activity from Iran’s Axis of Resistance.

Iran and Axis of Resistance

Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian warned on October 15 and 16 that a multi-front war against Israel is becoming more likely and that Iranian-backed militias may take preemptive actions against Israel in the “coming hours.”
Abdollahian stated in an interview with Al Jazeera on October 15 that Israel’s continued siege of Gaza is making a multi-front war “increasingly more probable.”[16] Abdollahian similarly posted on X (Twitter) on October 16 that “the time for political solutions is coming to an end” and that the expansion of the Israel-Hamas war to new fronts is becoming “inevitable.”[17] Abdollahian also warned on October 16 that resistance groups may take “preemptive measures” against Israel in the “coming hours.”[18] Iranian state media recirculated Abdollahian’s warning in English, indicating that their intended audience is the United States and Israel. [19] CTP-ISW will continue to closely monitor the Israel-Hamas war to forecast whether a multi-front war is becoming more or less likely.
  • The Iranian regime continues to signal its unwillingness to enter a direct conflict with Israel. Iran’s Mission to the United Nations emphasized that Iran will not intervene in the Israel-Hamas war if Israel refrains from attacking Iranian territory, interests, and nationals in a statement on October 15.[20] CTP-ISW previously reported that Iran has articulated its red line for directly intervening in the Israel-Hamas war as an Israeli attack on Iran.[21]
  • Iran and elements of its Axis of Resistance are preparing for the Hamas-Israel war to expand into a regional conflict. Iranian-backed militants have deployed to southern Lebanon and southwestern Syria.[22] These militants include Lebanese Hezbollah, Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces units, and the Afghan Fatemiyoun and Pakistani Zeynabiyoun divisions. The IDF has conducted airstrikes on Damascus and Aleppo international airports to disrupt Iranian military shipments to Syria and Lebanon.
Iran would likely provide material and financial support to its proxies to fight Israel rather than get directly involved in the Israel-Hamas war were this war to expand into a regional conflict. Direct Iranian involvement would lead to escalation with Israel, which Iran seeks to avoid. Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani warned Israel against attacking Iran on October 9, threatening a “devastating response” to any attack.[23] Iran has historically used its proxies in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen to advance its regional objectives—such as expelling the United States from the Middle East—while retaining a degree of plausible deniability.[24]

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is trying to improve its operational security in eastern Syria likely as part of an effort to move advanced military systems into Syria and Lebanon. Iran typically takes steps to reinforce operational security along its ground lines of communication in Syria to protect military shipments from Israeli airstrikes.[25] Israel has conducted airstrikes on the Damascus and Aleppo international airports in recent days, which Israeli media and officials have indicated is meant to disrupt the transfer of Iranian military systems to Syria and Lebanon. CTP-ISW is monitoring Iran positioning its proxies in the Levant to support the Palestinian militias fighting against Israel.

An Iraqi-based open-source intelligence account claimed on October 16 that 250-500 Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces arrived in Syria and Lebanon. This is consistent with CTP-ISW’s tracking of Iranian-backed foreign fighters deploying to border areas with Israel.[33] Iranian-backed militants have deployed to the southwestern Syrian border since the war began on October 7.[34] These militants also include members of the Afghan Fatemiyoun Division and Pakistani Zeynabiyoun Division, according to Israeli media.[35] IRGC Quds Force Commander Brigadier General Esmail Ghaani was in Syria coordinating some of these deployments as of October 15, according to an Iran-based journalist.[36] LH similarly redeployed militants from Mayadin to Damascus as part of an effort to transfer LH members throughout Syria to the southwestern border.[37]

Iran has pursued greater coordination with Palestinian groups during the past year. Iranian officials, Lebanese Hezbollah, and Palestinian militant groups held meetings, visits, and calls in the year leading up to Hamas’s October 7 attack. The coordination included Iran providing explosively formed penetrators (EFPs), which militants in the West Bank used in attacks against the IDF. This is consistent with comments from the PIJ leader in Lebanon, Ihsan Ataya, who acknowledged as recently as September 28 that Iran supports PIJ with money, weapons, and “everything it needs to confront Israel.”[38] The coordination also occurred after Hamas began planning its October 7 attack on Israel. The group’s spokesperson claimed the group began planning its attack in 2022.[39] The graphic below demonstrates this coordination with senior Iranian political and strategic leadership, as well as Hamas and PIJ military developments.
