Israel-Hamas war live: Gaza strikes to intensify, Israeli military says; West Bank mosque hit (theguardian.com)

The news that Israel is planning to evacuate 14 additional communities in northern Israel comes as its military says escalating attacks by Hezbollah risk “dragging Lebanon into a war”.

Agence France-Presse reports Israel Defence Forces spokesman Jonathan Conricus said: “Hezbollah ... is dragging Lebanon into a war that it will gain nothing from, but stands to lose a lot.”

Israel has been exchanging fire with Hezbollah across its northern border.

Conricus said:

Recent exchanges of fire have killed four Hezbollah fighters and a member of Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad in Lebanon, while three Israeli troops were injured, one seriously, in Hezbollah anti-tank fire, and two Thai farm workers also wounded.

Israel has ordered dozens of northern communities to evacuate, and several thousand Lebanese have also fled border regions for the southern city of Tyre.

Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem has warned the group could step up its involvement in the conflict.

Hezbollah is even of a different branch of Islam, and from what I heard, normal Lebanese people want absolutely nothing in common with these lowlifes. Lebanon is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic place once called “the Pearl of the Middle East”, and it would be very sad if Lebanon gets involved in the conflict.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his cabinet late on Saturday, reportedly to discuss the expected ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, while the US said it would send more air defence systems to the Middle East and prepare to move in more troops following attacks on its forces in Iraq and warnings from militants against intervening to support Israel against Hamas.

It's really gone downhill in the last seven years. They had a prime minister who led the country into horrible inflation and it really seemed to suck the fragile morale out of Lebanon.

Oh brother! Really? Ugh..........ugh......why???

Why a wave of anti-Semitism is sweeping across China

Sitting in front of a map of the world, Chinese influencer Su Lin has been live-streaming rants in support of Hamas and against Israel since the war broke out. Coming almost every day, they are rife with anti-Semitism.

“Hamas is still being too soft, going way too easy,” says Ms Su, who has nearly one million followers online, in one video, adding that the Israelis are “lackeys of colonialism”.

“Shouldn’t they be captured?” she shouts into a microphone, referring to Israeli citizens taken hostage. “Israel is now just a Jewish version of the Nazis and militarism.”

Ms Su’s videos are part of a wave of anti-Semitism that has emerged online in China since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct 7.

Communist Party propaganda and state media (the only media in the PRC), that's all young people hear day in and day out. And a few influencers become the mouthpiece of the CCP government.

This is horrible. This can happen to anyone, anywhere. Very sorry for them, and of course it only causes instability.

It is the fight for political power, prestige and influence. Of course the formalization of the relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia would have been a huge political win for the United States, and that it ain’t happening is a win for China.

Israel invades West Bank, blows up a mosque by a refugee camp.

At least 1 Rocket is reported to have Struck the Interior of Al-Asad Airbase in Western Iraq within the last Hour; Damage and/or Casualties are currently Unknown but this would be the Second Attack on the U.S. Base within the last 24 Hours.

Nepal repatriates the bodies of three of the 10 Nepali students who were killed during the devastating Hamas attack on Israel two weeks ago.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud and Israeli Ambassador Hanan Goder receive the bodies at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.

One Nepalese student is missing and believed to be held captive by Hamas in Gaza, officials say.

Israeli authorities have so far handed over four bodies to the Nepalese Embassy in Tel Aviv. They are in the process of identifying the remaining six bodies, a statement from the embassy says.

More than 200 Nepalese nationals returned home from Israel on Oct. 13. As many as 265 Nepali students were in Israel attending a program launched by the Israeli government.

Public Diplomacy Ministry to be closed down, budget transferred to Gaza border communities

Israel’s flagging Public Diplomacy Ministry will be shuttered and its budget transferred to rehabilitate communities near the Gaza border, the cabinet decides via a telephone vote.

Minister Galit Distel Atbaryan quit her post five days into the war, after failing to release any meaningful explanatory content after Israel suffered the largest single-day loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust in a devastating attack by Hamas, and entered what is expected to be a protracted war with the terror group.

The cabinet decision says that the office’s unused budget, NIS 9.4 million for 2023 and NIS 14.4 million for 2024, will be redirected to the new Tekuma Authority, charged with restarting post-war life in the battered western Negev.

The Tekuma Authority will also receive the defunct ministry’s 29 full-time employee allocation.

The decision will soon be brought to the Knesset, to finalize the ministry’s dissolution.

I hope many of those protesters are plain old anti-war. I can't picture them being pro-Hamas. No one likes war. There were large protests before we invaded Iraq. It wasn't much in the media, but the protests were quite large. I certainly wouldn't call the protesters "pro-Saddam". I can also understand their support for a two state solution. And the settlements and Gaza walled off is disturbing. However, the Palestinians were the ones who originally refused the two state solution and then there was something else they refused after the six day war. Someone opined that the UN should have made the two-state solution mandatory in 1947. It sure would have saved alot of headaches.

An assessment by French military intelligence indicates the most likely cause of the deadly explosion at Gaza City’s Al-Ahli hospital was a Palestinian rocket that carried an explosive charge of about 5kg (11 pounds) and possibly misfired, a senior French military official has said.

Associated Press reports the official said several rockets in the arsenal of Hamas carried explosive charges of about that weight, including an Iranian-made rocket and another that was Palestinian-made.

None of the French military intelligence pointed to an Israeli strike, the official said on Friday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity but was cleared to discuss the assessment by President Emmanuel Macron in what was described as an attempt to be transparent about the French intelligence findings. The assessment was based on classified information, satellite imagery, intelligence shared by other countries and open-source information, the official said.

The report came as Canada’s defence department said Israel was not behind the hospital explosion on Tuesday night.

Reuters quoted the National Department of Defence as saying in a statement: “Analysis conducted independently by the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command indicates with a high degree of confidence that Israel did not strike the Al-Ahli hospital on 17 October 2023.”

The explosion was more likely caused by an errant rocket fired from Gaza, the Canadian department said, based on analysis of open source and classified reporting.

Hamas blamed an Israeli airstrike for the killings, while the Israeli army blamed a misfired rocket from the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad, which denied it was responsible.

Ex-Israeli PM says humanitarian crisis in Gaza 'none of our business'

Naftali Bennett, former Prime Minister of Israel, says the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is "none of our business".

Israel controls the air space over Gaza and its shoreline, and strictly controls the movement of people and goods.

"The world can come and help the Gazans, that's none of our business," he told Victoria Derbyshire during the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, when asked if Israel will allow more aid into Gaza.

He says humanitarian action must be reciprocal, citing hostages being held by Hamas.

Derbyshire puts it to Bennett it is Israel's business as it must demonstrate its fight is with Hamas rather than the Palestinian people.

"We are not responsible for Gaza like you are not responsible for France," he responded.

"If others want to take care of the Gazans, that's theirs to do."

Pressed further that Israel does control Gaza's borders, Bennett said Israel's notice to Gazans to move to the south was evidence of humanitarian action.
