Israel-Hamas war live updates: Relief over hostage release; aid crosses into Gaza from Egypt (nbcnews.com)

'There is no military solution,' says the King of Jordan

Jordan's King Abdullah II denounced the international community for its "silence" and "apathy" toward the Israeli siege of the Gaza Strip, during his speech at the Cairo Summit for Peace, which convened Saturday.

"The message the Arab world is hearing is loud and clear: Palestinian lives matter less than Israeli ones. Our lives matter less than other lives," King Abdullah said. "The application of international law is optional. And human rights have boundaries—they stop at borders, they stop at races, and they stop at religions."

He slammed the displacement of Palestinians as a war crime and called for an immediate end to the war in Gaza, along with the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid, food, and medicines to the territory.

Addressing Israeli leadership specifically, King Abdullah said no military solution would solve their security concerns. The recurring bouts of violence would only lead to a "zero-sum game of death and destruction."

He endorsed a two state-solution, instead, as the path forward.

"The only path to a safe and secure future for the people of the Middle East and the entire world — for the Jewish people, for Christians, for Muslims alike — starts with the belief that every human life is of equal value and it ends with two states, Palestine and Israel, sharing land and peace from the river to the sea," he said.

Given that Egypt and the Palestinian Border Crossing Authority controls this crossing, I'm pretty certain Hamas has the details on when/what is coming.

Just saying.
So will Hamas be seizing 98 % of the supplies ?
I'd say it's a good bet !!

wish we could run a poll like we used to be able to

Just to see how many members think that this conflict is going to escalate beyond the Gaza strip.
Am feeling pessimistic on that question r n

Trauma all around - ' no such thing as PTSD' they say ( as far as we'd understand it?)

Gaza’s children are showing ever more signs of trauma two weeks into Israel’s intense bombardment, parents and psychiatrists in the tiny, crowded enclave say, with no safe place to hide from the falling bombs and little prospect of respite.

Reuters reports:

Children make up about half of Gaza’s 2.3 million population, living under near constant bombardment with many packed into temporary shelters in UN-run schools after fleeing their homes with little food or clean water.

“Children ... have started to develop serious trauma symptoms such as convulsions, bed-wetting, fear, aggressive behaviour, nervousness, and not leaving their parents’ sides,” said Gaza psychiatrist Fadel Abu Heen.

More than 4,100 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza so far, including more than 1,500 children, while 13,000 people have been injured according to the Palestinian health ministry.

“Our children suffer a lot at night. They cry all night, they pee themselves without meaning to and I don’t have time to clean up after them, one after the other,” said Tahreer Tabash, a mother of six children sheltering in a school.

“When there’s an explosion or any target getting hit nearby they are always screaming, always frightened. We try to calm the younger ones, try telling them, ‘Don’t worry, it’s just fireworks’. But the older ones understand what’s going on,” said Ibrahim al-Agha, an engineer sheltering in the house.

A 2022 report by aid group Save the Children found the psychosocial wellbeing of children in Gaza at “alarmingly low levels” after 11 days of fighting in 2021, leaving half of all Gaza children in need of support.

Mental health experts in Gaza have said there is no such thing there as post traumatic stress disorder because the trauma in the enclave is continuous, with repeated bouts of armed conflict stretching back nearly two decades.'

German news site

In London, around 100K marched today. IMO British political leaders will pay no attention to a march of 100k, they haven't in the past. The polls published on representative samples of GB -wide opinion will be of more concern to them, but how much concern, IDK. ( Election due 2024)

Negotiators hopeful 'more hostages' can be released, diplomat says

There is a cautious feeling of hope among negotiators that yesterday's release of two people taken captive by Hamas "can lead to more hostages being released," a diplomat with knowledge of the talks says.

"The Israelis have been clear they are not willing to talk until all the hostages are released. So it may be better for Hamas to release them faster because that may lead to wider dialogue or mediation," the diplomat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity said.

They said there were "ups and downs" during the discussions, with a positive moment after Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Doha being followed by a pause in talks after the deadly hospital blast in Gaza.

“If Iran involves itself directly in this war… then the whole world will witness how the Iranians rise again and finish this regime once and for all” says Iranian human rights activist @Vahid_Beheshti as thousands take part in pro-Palestinian protest in #London

I don't know about that.....
Iranians have tried uprising, but it seems to go nowhere because it's a dictatorship. (Don't know it it's correct word, cuz I'm half asleep, but I think you get the idea) If seems like no matter what Iranians do, the govt just arrests them.

I also don't know what percentage of Iranian citizens are actually supporting Israel. (Kinda like it's his opinion)

Hezbollah announce death of member killed ‘performing jihad’

The Hezbollah terror group announces the death of a member who was killed while “performing jihad.”

Hezbollah does not elaborate on where Ismail Ahmed al-Zein was killed, but it is believed he was killed in an Israeli strike during recent skirmishes on the Lebanon border.

At least 14 Hezbollah members have been killed in Israeli retaliatory strikes in southern Lebanon in the past two weeks, after the terror group has launched numerous missile attacks against northern Israel.

Official says Israel gave green light for Gaza aid several days ago

Israel gave the green light for humanitarian aid to pass through Egypt’s Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip several days ago, says an Israeli official, speaking to The Times of Israel on condition of anonymity.

The first 20 aid trucks passed from Egypt to Rafah this morning, with the timing set by Egyptian discretion, the official says.

Aid was one of the first topics discussed between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden, amid burgeoning concerns for the welfare of 2 million Palestinians within the besieged Gaza Strip.

Their crisis has been exacerbated by Hamas bombing water and electricity lines within the Strip, says the Israeli official.

Israel holds an informal veto over what aid can be transferred to Gaza, in line with understandings reached with Egypt. Israel is especially concerned with weapons smuggling into the strip, or diverting aid to Hamas’s war effort. It has also ruled out letting fuel into the Strip.

Egypt, the official adds, is nervous about Palestinian refugees crossing into their territory. No people evacuated Gaza through Rafah today amid expectations that foreign citizens would be allowed to leave.

IDF says private homes harboring terrorists are legitimate targets

A senior Israel Defense Forces official says the military will try not to strike zones in Gaza where humanitarian aid is being distributed unless rockets are fired from the area.

“It’s a safe zone. We have a system in which every time we decide that an area…is a safe zone, we declare no attack in this area. We won’t attack them,” he tells a group of foreign journalists.

He adds that the definition of what constitutes a “legitimate target” has changed, because the use of civilian infrastructure by Hamas “turns a private home into a legitimate target. And anyone who supports that home is a legitimate target.”

He acknowledges that the IDF has attacked houses where there are civilians living among terrorists.

(This is not directed at any one poster.). In my opinion young people are the ones who are going to change the world. I welcome their input. A young person who takes down a posting and apologizes for their insensitivity even when they did not know they were being insensitive is getting it right. We must keep an open mind and be continually learning - that is what is going to move us forward. We must show other grace as we muddle through challenging times. That is my hope.

Where is NK in all this, has KJU commented, (still overloaded, too overloaded to look, experiencing “system error”).

Tia.

I'm glad we haven't heard from him.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it.

If there is no power in Gaza or very little, no water, supplies, food, etc and they have been saying for 2 week since this started that there is going to be this huge issue with no power and water and so on.. then how are people getting so much information out of Gaza.. how are they communicating to tell about the kids struggling, etc. Is life even going on at all in Gaza.. school and shopping at stores, etc. I assume a little area cut off from the world and I am curious how is anyone communicating with the world outside that area? How is hostage negotiations happening? Who are they talking to and how do they have phones, or internet, or power. I guess I assumed no power mean zero.. NONE.. clearly that can't be the case. How are all these videos and propaganda getting released from HAMAS? I suppose in the tunnels, but if they can get in and out in the tunnels, then why can't they get supplies that way? If they can get supplies that way then where are the exits at and why aren't those bombed?

IDF drone strike hits another anti-tank cell on Lebanese border

The Israel Defense Forces says it has carried out another drone strike against a terror squad in southern Lebanon preparing an anti-tank guided missile attack.

The IDF publishes footage of the strike against the group, near the Mount Dov area.

It marks the third terror squad the IDF has targeted in southern Lebanon today.

The Hezbollah terror group has claimed responsibility for several missile attacks on IDF positions and Israeli towns today, as well as in the past two weeks.

So true. Several people who signed the Harvard letter, retracted. Some members of organizations didn't know their names were attached to the Pro-Palestinian letter. However, they were doxxed and their names were not removed from the doxxing. I feel bad for the ones who retracted.

I recently signed a petition because I liked the first several paragraphs. I knew the person with the petition. Later on, I found out the petition was eight pages long. It was full of goofy stuff. Enough people signed the petition that it got on the ballot. It turned into a weird thing. And I'm old too.

There is a reason that the ICRC (Red Cross) remains the authority on Hostages in War Time, including those currently being held in the Gaza despite the fact that the Palestinian Red Crescent exists there.

That is precisely because the Palestinian Red Crescent has a previous history of supporting Hamas Terrorism by:

- it's drivers transporting suicide bombers to their destinations under cover of "Conventionaly Protected Ambulances";
- it's drivers acting as suicide bombers;
- one of it's managers actually directing/ordering the suicide bombing by one of it's drivers;
- it's drivers, using ambulances as "protection from targetting", to transport communications between Hamas' various headquarters;
- transporting armed Hamas fighters, using ambulances as "protection" from fire-fight to fire-fight;
- transporting armed Hamas figters between locations, and loading in some uninjured children too as further sheilds, in ambulances (ths narrowing avoiding being hit in an airstrike [footage below in link] because of those children they had forced on board as additional shields);
- and are now subject to legitimate search while en route due to weapons & suicide vests etc being found and transported within them.

Amongst other actions contrary to war crimes conventions.

The Palestinian Red Crescent, and I note "Palestinian" as opposed to the Red Crescent as a whole, is not exactly recognized or known as an unbiased organisation in conflicts between Hamas & Israel.

If I was posing for a group photo or selfie in front of a sofa with octopus soft toy on sofa behind me, I wouldn't have a clue what it meant

Hands up those on WS right now who would have known of this double meaning prior to this Thunberg story? (About 50 people are regularly posting on this thread, be interested to know how many would say they knew)

Anyway these topics are probably some kind of displacement?

Rolling Stone's take

'TWO WEEKS INTO the horrific war between Israel and Hamas, the state of online discourse has descended from “generally bad and stupid” to “unfathomably dumb and borderline dangerous.” Case in point: recent allegations that environmental activist Greta Thunberg, after posting a “Stand with Gaza” sign and demanding a ceasefire, was actually posting a Nazi dogwhistle. Later, the official X account for the Israeli government piled on, too.

In a follow-up tweet, Thunberg, who is autistic, clarified that the plush octopus on her shoulder was not a reference to a (frankly, somewhat historically obscure) anti-Semitic canard, but to a common toy used by neurodivergent people to express their feelings. “It has come to my knowledge that the stuffed animal shown in my earlier post can be interpreted as a symbol for antisemitism, which I was completely unaware of,” she wrote. “The toy in the picture is a tool often used by autistic people as a way to communicate feelings. We are of course against any type of discrimination, and condemn antisemitism in all forms and shapes. This is non-negotiable. That is why I deleted the last post.”'

I have no idea what the octopus is associated with.

Foreign citizens not being allowed to leave Gaza despite opening of Egypt border

Palestinian Americans and other dual citizens rushed to southern Gaza’s Rafah crossing with Egypt as 20 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid entered the besieged strip as the border opened for the first time since the start of the war.

Even as embassies asked their citizens in Gaza to stand ready at the border, crowds of disappointed Palestinians holding American, Canadian, German and British passports waited hours in vain for at least the fifth time this week.

“There is no opening of the crossing, and the suffering is the same,” says US citizen Dina al- Khatib. “They communicate with us, but there is no change.”

Al-Khatib said she and her family were desperate to get out.

“It’s is not like previous wars,” she said. “There is no electricity, no water, no internet, nothing.”

It was not immediately clear if the Palestinians or Egyptians were preventing them from leaving.

What???
Wouldn't know...
Greta's opinion has little impact on what's going on anyway. Nations are gonna do what they want to do. Hamas is gonna do what it wants to do.

As a matter of fact, I think some protests are so intense because they are trying to achieve "influence", but they're the "underdog".

Look at the US. There were pro-Palestinian protests, but our govt did not make a decision based on those protests.
