Israel's ground operation making 'significant' achievements but 'paying a heavy price', says defence minister

The Israeli military is making “significant” achievements during the ground operation in the Gaza Strip" but it is also “paying a heavy price”, defence minister Yoav Gallant said.

“We are deploying forces on a large scale, deep in the [Gaza] Strip,” the Times of Israel reported Gallant telling troops belonging to Israel’s air force units.

There are battles against the forces that are operating [in Gaza] and the results and achievements on the battlefield are very high. Unfortunately, in war, there are also prices, and the prices in the last day were heavy prices. Despite that, we are also determined to continue and win.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) earlier said that two soldiers were killed and another two seriously wounded during clashes with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.

From the Times of Israel’s Emanuel Fabian:

'At least 47 bodies recovered' from rubble after blast at Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza – reports

Video footage has shown at least 47 bodies recovered from rubble after an explosion in several houses in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said in a statement there were “more than 50 martyrs and around 150 wounded and dozens under the rubble, in a heinous Israeli massacre that targeted a large area of homes in Jabalia camp.”

AFP reported that dozens of onlookers could be seen standing on the edges of two vast craters as people searched for survivors, and that its video footage from the scene showed at least 47 bodies recovered.

AFP said the Israeli military did not immediately comment when contacted.

On October 7th, 1,400 men, women, children and babies were murdered by Hamas terrorists who went door to door butchering entire families. There is now an interactive map which provides a comprehensive representation of the atrocities committed by Hamas on that day. Please visit the website and pay tribute to the victims and their families whose lives have been destroyed.

These are the murdered Israeli children of Kibbutz Be’eri. They were tortured, dismembered, and then burned to death. Archaeologists are sifting through the rubble to find their teeth. This was Hamas’ October 7 Massacre.

The mapping of massacres is mind-numbing. Even though I've seen Hamas go-pro footage since October 7, detailing murders, to see the big picture is a lot to process.

Tensions high in the region

Hugo Bachega in southern Lebanon

Frequent cross-border attacks between the Lebanese group Hezbollah and the Israeli army have raised fears that the Lebanon-Israel border could become another front in the war.

But tensions are high elsewhere in the region – and the so-called Axis of Resistance is a common player. This is an alliance supported by Iran that includes Hezbollah, the Houthis in Yemen and groups in Iraq and Syria.

Today, the Houthi rebel group said it had launched ballistic missiles and drones from Yemen toward Israel and warned that there was more to come. A day earlier, the Biden administration said US forces in Iraq and Syria had been attacked 23 times since mid-October, blaming Iranian-backed groups.

US officials have repeatedly warned Iran against escalating the situation. The Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, appeared to react to those warnings on Sunday, saying that: "Washington asks us to not do anything, but they keep giving widespread support to Israel."

Israel, he said, had "crossed the red lines, which may force everyone to take action".

Here in Lebanon, all eyes are on Hezbollah. Its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, is expected to make his first speech since the Israel-Hamas war broke out on Friday.

Jabalia is a tightly packed warren of narrow streets

Paul Adams
Reporting from Jerusalem

I know Jabalia well, having visited the camp in 1980 and many times since.

The largest of the Gaza Strip’s eight refugee camps, it's a tightly packed warren of narrow streets and breezeblock buildings.

Before the war, its 116,000 residents lived in just 1.4 sq km.

Its busy streets are a far cry from the tents that Palestinians first lived in when they fled or were driven from their homes after Israel’s creation in 1948.

It’s been hit repeatedly since Israel’s bombing campaign began on 7 October. The IDF has yet to comment on what's happened today.

It's not clear how many people have fled in the last few weeks, but today's pictures of hundreds of residents searching in the rubble for bodies suggest that many remain.

I was in touch with Asmaa, a young aspiring journalist, until a week ago. She said she and her family had decided not to obey Israel’s instructions for the population to move south.

"It’s dangerous all over the Gaza Strip," she messaged me. "There's no point moving."

A week ago, Asmaa stopped replying to my messages.

Israeli tanks move steadily towards Gaza City

There have been only brief comments from the Israeli military, saying it's expanding ground operations.

But what we're hearing from inside Gaza is that tanks and armoured vehicles are moving steadily towards Gaza City - where the IDF says Hamas has a network of tunnels used as a command and control centre.

We understand from colleagues that Israeli forces have penetrated the northern neighbourhoods of Gaza City - and that there are armoured vehicles on both of the main north-to-south roads.

One goes along the coast from the north of Gaza City, and the other runs through the middle of the Strip to the south of the city.

What is unclear now is what could happen to civilians. We know that there are hundreds of thousands of people who have not heeded the Israeli military's call to move from the northern half of the Gaza Strip south.

Now it would seem that those in Gaza City could be stuck there.

Blinken: It would make the most sense for a "revitalized Palestinian Authority" to have governance over Gaza

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that it would “make the most sense” for an “effective and revitalized Palestinian Authority to have governance and ultimately security responsibility for Gaza.”

Blinken noted during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing: “Whether you can get there in one step is a big question that we have to look at. And if you can't, then there are other temporary arrangements that may involve a number of other countries in the region."

The PA, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, has recognized Israel and engaged in multiple failed peace initiatives with it. But its credibility among Palestinians has suffered over the years.

The top US diplomat has repeatedly said that there cannot be a return to the “status quo” with Hamas, and Israeli officials have said it is their aim to eliminate the group from Gaza.

"We also can't have, and the Israeli start with this proposition themselves, Israel, running or controlling Gaza. That's not their intent. It's what they want to do. And it's not something that would be supported," Blinken said.

In my opinion, it was a bad idea to publish those alleged plans, knowing it would create more hostility toward Israel.
It's not exactly a secret or even new

The location of this Hamas facility is 31.544388,34.475327. The IDF says they took control of it, which would mean they are about 3.5 miles into Gaza from the north.

NEW - Multiple IDF statements suggest Israel carried out a very significant ground raid targeting a #Hamas command centre in Jabaliya. During the raid Israeli forces eliminated Ebrahim Biari, the commander of the Jabaliya centre brigade in Hamas, who is believed to be acting as the overall commanding officer of Hamas units fighting in northern Gaza. Troops from the Givati Brigade took a building in west Jabaliya. Hamas's Jabaliya Brigade used this stronghold for training and the preparation of militant operations, as the site contained military structures for launching missiles, in addition to tunnels used by militants to move to the beach area. The site also contained many weapons. During the fighting, violent clashes took place with militants, and the forces eliminated many of them. Airstrikes were also used. The forces also uncovered tunnel openings, combat means, and military equipment. It also revealed intelligence materials. At the end of the operation, the Israeli forces took control of the site.

"Israel's tactics are already clear.

Israel will complete the operation itself.

1698774915141.png

'The Israeli army entered the Gaza Strip, cutting it in two. -

Now individual districts of Gaza will be isolated, and the lack of water and food will force the population to leave the city.

Then the final deal with Hamas fighters will take place'
- comments General/expert (former commander of the land forces).

Major General Yaron Finkelman, head of the IDF's Southern Command, entered the Gaza Strip personally and is among his soldiers, according to photo reports published by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

He used the radio to encourage soldiers to deal with Hamas fighters. -
'We will fight in the streets, we will fight in the tunnels, we will fight where necessary.
The entire nation of Israel, everyone is looking at us now.
You are the generation of victory!' - he said.

After 25 days of war, the invasion forces cut through the Gaza Strip, separating Gaza City and the northern settlements.

Military experts believe that this has created a trap from which Hamas fighters will no longer be able to escape. Israel does not have to conquer Gaza at once and engage in urban battles with Hamas fighters.

According to military officer, Israel's tactics are already clear.
- 'Israeli forces will gradually isolate districts of Gaza City. The population will not survive long without water and food.
This way it will be forced to leave.
The army must create corridors of life through which it will be possible to escape from Gaza.

When Hamas is deprived of the civilian shield, there will be a final crackdown on the militants. Let them become martyrs if that's what they want.
They will be destroyed systematically until the last survivors release the Israeli hostages.
This also means that a significant part of the city will be reduced to rubble', the interlocutor adds.

He believes that despite threats from Iran about crossing the red line, Israel will complete the operation.
None of the Muslim countries will be able to stop Israeli shelling and bombing.

'Some analysts are scaring public opinion with the outbreak of World War III,
but I believe that none of the countries threatening Israel will decide to take part in the war.

Iran would be alone in this, and rich sheikhs will not want to give up their luxurious lives to go to shelters.

The leaders of countries in the region are playing a game to build their political importance.
This is how statements and participation in demonstrations in support of Palestine should be interpreted.

I believe that Israel will complete the operation itself despite everything.
It will destroy Gaza, burying its defenders under the rubble.
This is what the end of this war will look like' - he sums up.

The war will end with huge casualties among the population.

'Politicians are pitted against each other,
soldiers are fighting,
but the tragedy will affect civilian victims the most.

Israel must give civilians a chance to leave the city, Hamas must allow them to do so.

Otherwise,
both sides will become equal murderers' -
summarizes the General."

Hamas says it will free some foreign hostages 'in the next few days'

Hamas’s armed wing said it would release a number of the foreign hostages in its captivity "in the next few days”.

Abu Obeida, a spokesperson for Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, said in a televised statement posted on social media:

We have informed intermediaries that we will release a certain number of foreigners in the next few days.

The Israeli military earlier today raised the number of hostages it says are confirmed held in Gaza by Hamas to 240.

Hamas has so far released four hostages back to Israel; the IDF has claimed to have recovered a soldier, Ori Megidish; and Shani Louk, who was believed to be held hostage, has been declared killed.

The hospitals among the latest hit in Israeli strikes, according to a Sky News producer in Gaza

Image:Bombing reported around a hospital in Gaza, according to a Sky News producer

''An Israeli government minister said there had not been any strikes on Shifa hospital, which is the biggest medical facility in Gaza.

Amichai Chikli, the minister for Diaspora Affairs, said Israel will not bomb any hospital in Gaza with civilians inside, even if Hamas is operating out of such facilities.''
Even if bombs are not dropped on the hospital, but are dropped 2 blocks away, the underground tunnels present instability such that the building could collapse due to damaged tunnels.

The EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has “firmly condemned” attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, his office has said.

The statement came after Borrell held calls with the Saudi, Jordanian and Egyptian foreign ministers and the secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Hissein Brahim Taha, AFP reported.

More than 120 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank since 7 October, according to the Ramallah-based health ministry.

The UN relief agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) said three of its staff have been killed in strikes “while in their houses with their families” in Gaza over the last 24 hours.

A total of 67 UNRWA staff have been killed in the Gaza Strip since 7 October, the agency said in its latest update.

Humanitarian needs remain “dire” in the Palestinian territory with the situation in shelters in “critical condition”, it said.

Israeli authorities told Shani’s family on Sunday night that she was dead, her cousin, Tom Weintraub Louk, told The Washington Post in WhatsApp messages Monday. Tom said Israeli authorities had matched a piece of Shani’s skull with her DNA. The bone fragment was found in Israel, Tom added.

“She was murdered by Hamas,” Tom said. “Her body is probably still in Gaza.”

Victims of the violence amid the Israel-Gaza war are being declared dead based on bone fragments and other remains found on both sides of the fence that humans cannot live without, Dr. Chen Kugel, director of Israel’s national center of forensic medicine, said.

Let’s read between the lines: prisoners are tortured and then executed Isis-style. This awaits everyone who the jihadists take prisoners. This might be our future unless we do something now.

I don't think this is the same site as the high rise in the Jabalia refugee camp which was blown up. Google maps shows a flat area, almost like a home, compound or warehouse. The sites appear they can be almost a mile apart. (But who knows, 31°32'37.6"N 34°28'31.9"E
On zoom in, I think I see a gate at this compound

ETA: I think a tank was involved. It appears to be one of the N-S (Al-toam) roads that tanks were on yesterday. Road is about a block from this compound. Reports on Al Jazeera is that the high rise in the refugee camp was very close to Indonesian Hospital, so the sites are different.

@USAmbUN

The United States is deeply concerned by the significant uptick in violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. We condemn these killings – and we urge Israel to prevent these attacks, working with the Palestinian Authority.

Much of the violence in the territory has been directed at herders and Bedouin communities. The U.N. said those Palestinians have faced physical violence and intimidation and also been denied access to their lands, a particular hardship given that many are farmers.

I believe that most of us predicted this "end game", that Hamas started this war, inflaming the Israelis with their atrocities.

Now, sitting back, watching the world blaming Isreal for killing innocent children. Hamas just sees the children as a tool. Part of the plan to bog down and enmesh Israelis from actually getting rid of Hamas. Neat switch, and quite Machiavellian. Israel, who didn't start the conflict, is now the bully.

Israel should have dealt with it the next day. Carpet bombings are nothing new even in civilized world. Israeli citizens have been tortured, burned and taken hostages? If Israel launched massive strikes the same day, all explanations would have been post factum. Now they have to explain to the world, to UN, to the US, to everyone why they have to do what they do.
