Hamas official says Iran wasn’t given heads up on Israel attack​

Iran was not given a heads up ahead of Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel Saturday morning, according to the Gaza terror group’s director of national relations abroad Ali Baraka.

“It was a surprise to everyone, including Iran,” Baraka tells NBC News in an interview.

“We did not inform them that there was an operation that would happen at dawn on Oct. 7, he adds. “After the operation began, we informed Iran.”

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Iran helped plan the attack but officials from various countries involved have since refuted the claim.

Israeli security forces said to kill terrorist in gunfire exchange near Gaza-area community​

Israeli security forces are said to have killed a Palestinian terrorist in a gunfire exchange near the Gaza-area community of Kibbutz Sa’ad, Channel 12 reports.

The terrorist was one of six traveling in a vehicle near the kibbutz, according to the report.

It was not immediately clear if the terrorists infiltrated from Gaza or if they were in Israel already amid the unprecedented onslaught on Saturday.

UAE said to warn Assad against joining Hamas conflict against Israel​

The United Arab Emirates has reportedly warned the Assad regime in Syria not to enter the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Abu Dhabi has also warned Damascus not to allow any attacks against Israel from its soil, the Axios news site reports, citing two sources briefed on the matter.

The diplomacy is part of a US-led effort to prevent Hezbollah and other parties from joining the ongoing war.

Mother of Israeli captive: ‘I want him to come back, healthy and alive’​

The mother of an Israeli man who went missing after attending a music festival near Gaza told Al Jazeera she wants her son to “come back, healthy and alive”.

Sgal Cohen’s son Elya, 27, was last seen in a picture on social media, purportedly at a hospital in Gaza. Cohen says she has not slept for two days.

“I knew he was going to the party, with his friend, his girlfriend but I didn’t know where is the party,” she said. “It is very difficult to think about it to eat, to drink, to sleep, I don’t sleep for two days I always thinking where is he? What happened to him? Is he OK?

Hamas official says organisation prepared for 'scenario of long war'​

Now from that Associated Press interview with exiled senior Hamas official Ali Barakeh.

Barakeh said Hamas is ready to fight a long war with Israel, saying it has an arsenal of rockets that will last a long time. He also said that the hostages taken by Hamas will be used to secure the release of Arabs detained in Israeli jails and Palestinians in US jails.

“We have prepared well for this war and to deal with all scenarios, even the scenario of the long war,” Barakeh told the AP. “We will bring life to a stop in the Zionist entity if the aggression does not stop on Gaza.”

Barakeh, who was Hamas’ representative in Lebanon for years and is now in charge of coordinating with other Palestinian factions, said his group will use the scores of Israelis it captured in the raid to secure the release of all Arabs detained in Israeli jails and even some Palestinians imprisoned in the United States on charges of funding Hamas.

“There are Palestinians held in America. We will ask for their release,” he said, without specifying who he was referring to.

In 2009, a court in Dallas sentenced two founding members of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, once the largest US Muslim charity, to 65 years in prison for funneling millions of dollars to Hamas. Three other men were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 to 20 years for conspiracy.

This contrast can lead us very far, and is dangerous. However, just to understand-
Ukraine borders with Russia and Belarus, but also, with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova. Ukraine lies in the center of Europe. Europe was so devastated by two world wars that any idea of changing the borders is unacceptable for most Europeans. The territory of Ukraine is 603,333 sq.km. The population is 36,744,636 people.

Israel has borders with Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The territory of Israel is between 20,770 and 22000 sq.km. The population is 9,790,400 people. Imagine Massachusetts amidst the desert. Plus, Israel is located in the part of the Middle East that used to be, is and will be a constant powder keg. Israel has been a very longstanding, and very loyal, ally to the US. I am a European, and the invasion into the Ukraine cuts deeply. But as an American, I understand that we can't lose Israel.

I can add many things, and history is full of horrible stories. But the Jews are one of the very few unlucky ethnicities that once were exterminated simply for being Jewish. It most world conflicts, there were/are, still, many additional factors involved. Here, nothing, just being Jewish. In fact, having one Jewish grandparent was enough.

It's never a surprise when this type of violence flairs in the region. It's been ongoing for decades. You mention the size of Ukraine in comparison to Israel. The size of Gaza is about 360 sq km. The population is about 2,000,000 comprised of Palestinians, Jews and Christians. It's a powder keg.

It's hard to fathom the unspeakable cruelty to civilians. The casual murder of people going about their business, some of it just metres away from the fence that encompasses Gaza. It's been referred to as the largest open-air prison in the world.

I don't know whether it will ever end. I don't know whether both sides consider total annihilation of the enemy as the only solution. To me, it's obvious who will win this particular skirmish but will it bring any peace or just a break in the cycle? What happens to those Jews and Christians who live in Gaza? Will they survive? What happens to the children of Gaza? How do you protect them? It's untenable. A house divided cannot stand. Israel and Gaza are tenants in the same house with a tenth of the population locked behind a fence. There are no winners.

Reuters News Agency is reporting that efforts are under way for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to visit Moscow, citing Russia's RBC news outlet.

The Palestinian leadership is split between Mr Abbas' Palestinian Authority (PA), which controls parts of the West Bank, and the militant group, Hamas, which governs Gaza.

US warships are a show of force​

The US has started sending munitions and military equipment to Israel and is moving navy warships and combat aircraft into the region in a show of support.

The fleet was already in the Mediterranean Sea, so it didn't have far to go. And it is not unusual for the US to deploy naval vessels in the region when there are flare-ups.
It hasn't done so during previous battles between Hamas and Israel, which have been self-contained. But this isn't about Hamas. The Pentagon is worried the conflict may spread.

A senior defence official said the warships and planes are meant to demonstrate a concrete commitment to Israel's defence, and to deter any country or militant group from joining the fight.

Chiefly that means Iran, which backs Lebanon's powerful Hizbollah movement, as well as Hamas.

The US will be part of Israel's lengthy and punishing response, although National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said there was no intention to put US boots on the ground.

Palestinian health ministry says four ambulances targeted by Israeli forces​

Palestine’s health ministry has released a statement claiming Israeli defence forces “targeted” ambulances in southern Gaza. Four ambulances have been “put out of service” the ministry claims:

"The Israeli occupation forces targeted 4 ambulances in the Abasan area, east of Khan Yunis. The Ministry said that this aggressive targeting caused damage and put these cars out of service.

The Ministry indicated that these aggressive actions threaten the lives of citizens and hinder the work of medical teams in providing necessary health care to the injured. It appealed to the international community to intervene immediately to stop these aggressive attacks and protect health facilities."

Militants threw grenades into bomb shelters and shot into passing cars near festival site, new videos show

A second video — another dash camera from a parked car just up the road — shows more militants near a bus stop and bomb shelter. Militants surrounded a bomb shelter and were screaming at a shirtless man standing outside it. This incident happened at 7:56 a.m. local time, according to the video.

It's unclear what is being said, but the man squats on the ground and they begin kicking him. It's also not known what happened to the man.

The video then shows a militant throwing a grenade into the bomb shelter. Another man runs out, trying to escape the explosion.

He runs out of frame, but the militants immediately fix their guns on him and begin firing. His fate is also unknown.

CNN visited that bomb shelter today. Its interior was covered in blood.
