Europe suspends aid payment to Palestinians after Hamas attack

Is the EU now walking this back??

“The scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people is a turning point,” Oliver Varhelyi, the commissioner for the EU’s neighbourhood and enlargement, said in a post on social media. “There can be no business as usual.”

The announcement appeared to take several member states by surprise, with Spain, Ireland and Luxembourg expressing dissent.

Spain said it “disagrees” with the EU decision to suspend development aid.

“[Foreign Minister] Jose Manuel Albares called European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi to say he disagrees with this decision,” Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, adding that Albares called for this to be discussed at Tuesday’s meeting of the foreign ministers.

Ireland questioned the legitimacy of the decision.

“Our understanding is that there is no legal basis for a unilateral decision of this kind by an individual commissioner and we do not support a suspension of aid,” a foreign ministry spokesman said. “We are formally requesting the Commission to clarify the legal basis for this announcement.”

Luxembourg’s acting foreign minister Jean Asselborn said that his government did not support the suspension of aid.

Knowing the internet, people will come across it unwillingly. I know people were hiding ronnie McNutts(sp?) Suicide inside of other innocent videos, so people were seeing it without meaning to.

I would avoid social media for a while if you are concerned
I have a feeling that X/twitter will be the platform will be the biggest platform for these videos, their moderation has gone out the window

Held just 5km (three miles) from the Israel-Gaza border in the Negev desert in southern Israel, the Supernova trance festival began on Friday evening with thousands of young people attending.

Festivalgoers were seen dancing to bass music under colourful tents and fairy lights in one of the main areas before the camera panned to smoke rising in the distance - marked by six grey clouds in the sky.

Shortly after the music was stopped, around 6.30am, announcements were made and security staff began ushering people away from the stages.

With the sound of gunfire, people were seen frantically running into the surrounding fields to escape. We located one video to one of the fields east of the site across the road.

North of the festival, footage showed Israeli security forces and local police setting up a perimeter and fighting positions as festivalgoers took cover.

it was very easy for me to accidentally come across Shani Louk being paraded nude in the truck, which is obviously very disturbing even while blurred. avoiding social media really is the only way at this point.

We might as well tie bows on our hand baskets if we believe there's benefit to negotiations to be had with terrorists. imo

US president Joe Biden plans to speak with several allies Monday regarding the situation in Israel, the White House said.

Biden convened a meeting earlier today with top national security aides, including the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, national security adviser Jake Sullivan, principal deputy national security adviser Jon Finer, homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall and White House chief of staff Jeff Zients.

During that meeting, Biden urged continued coordination with Israel and other regional partners, the White House said.

College campuses around the U.S. braced for tensions Monday as opposing groups spoke out about whether Gaza or Israel was to blame in the escalating conflict. At Harvard University, a joint statement signed by 31 student organizations said they “hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.” At the University of California, Berkeley, the local chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine issued a statement denouncing the Israeli occupation of Gaza.

Matt Vogel, executive director of Hillel, the Jewish student group, at the University of Vermont, posted on Instagram that campus police would increase patrols by the school’s Hillel house this week where a vigil in support of Israel is planned. More than 45 faculty are organizing a teach-in to provide students with historical context, he said. “We keep the memories of those murdered alive and we will keep hope alive for those who are held captive,” Vogel wrote on Instagram.

Hamas is open to discussions over a possible truce with Israel, having “achieved its targets”, a senior Hamas official has said.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, speaking in a phone interview with Al Jazeera, was asked whether the group is willing to discuss a possible ceasefire.

He replied that Hamas was open to “something of that sort” and to “all political dialogues”.

He added Hamas had captured “tens” of dual citizens from Israel, including those with Russian and Chinese citizenship.

They’ve achieved targets? What are these targets? Death and misery and displacement of thousands of innocent people, including their “own” people.

Same going on in Toronto right now but I can't find any government funded/legacy media actually covering it. So, chalk it up to just my personal observation/opinion.
Found this.

Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, compared the incursion by Hamas militants on the weekend with the “abhorrent and unspeakable” actions of Isis, calling on world leaders to designate Hamas as a terrorist body and to support Israel“in words and in deeds”.

In a televised statement, he said:

To my mind, not since the Holocaust have so many Jews been killed in one day. And not since the Holocaust, have we witnessed scenes of Jewish women and children, grandparents - even Holocaust survivors - being herded into trucks and taken into captivity.
Hamas has imported, adopted, and replicated the savagery of Isis, entering civilian homes on a holiday, and murdering in cold blood whole families. Young and old, violating and burning bodies, beating and torturing their innocent victims, Jews and Muslims, and other faiths. The brutality. Inhumanity. The barbarity of monsters. Not humans - monsters.

Asked whether the UK would back Israel if it was to launch a ground operation in Gaza, Rishi Sunak’s official spokesperson said:

We support Israel exercising its right to self-defence and proportionate action to bring an end to the violence.
The spokesperson said there were no plans to redeploy military assets to the area but that there were currently British assets in the region, including HMS Duncan under Nato control, which is patrolling in the Mediterranean.

Some countries have begun to withdraw their citizens from Israel and Gazabut the UK Foreign Office is currently only asking British or dual nationals affected to contact its helpline. The Foreign Office has advised against all but essential travel to the region due to the conflict.

There are no standalone flights being organised by Britain at this stage but the possibility of evacuations is being kept under review. There are an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 British or dual nationals in Israel and Gaza, according to the UK government.

Asked whether the UK thought Iran had any involvement in the encouragement of Hamas’s attacks on Israel, Sunak’s spokesperson said Hamas was “fully responsible for this appalling act of terror”, but he added:

We do know Iran poses an unacceptable threat to Israel through its support for Hamas and Hezbollah.
No 10 said Suella Braverman, the home secretary, was monitoring reports of increased antisemitic attacks and had spoken with the Community Security Trust, the organisation working to protect British Jews, with the possibility of surge police patrols in some areas.

Rishi Sunak has pledged to provide diplomatic, intelligence or security support to Israel if requested after attacks by Hamas, as he chaired an emergency meeting of Cobra.

No 10 said the UK stood “poised” to help Israel militarily if it asked for assistance and is not ruling out evacuating some British citizens from affected areas, saying keeping them safe was the “utmost priority”.

Sunak, who had a phone call with the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Sunday, said the UK was one of Israel’s strongest allies and he highlighted that Britain had previously provided “the kinds of equipment that they’ve used to defend themselves over the past couple of days”.

“And as I said to the prime minister [of Israel], we will continue to provide – whether that’s diplomatic, intelligence or security support – as they need,” he said, after a meeting at a business in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The prime minister also told an event on Monday night that “terrorism will not prevail”. Speaking at the Future Resilience Forum, a thinktank launched by Theresa May’s former chief of staff Fiona Hill, Sunak said:

Israel has the absolute right to defend itself and to deter further incursions.
We are working with the Israeli authorities to support them and we’re doing everything possible to support British citizens who were caught up in the attacks and the families of those who perished. I also want to say a word to Jewish communities here at home: I am with you. And we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that you feel safe.

Emotions run high at Jewish vigil outside Downing Street

Lucy Manning
BBC News Special Correspondent

Some prayed, others chanted, some stood in tears, others in quiet thought. Across the political and religious spectrum, British Jews, Israelis and supporters, united outside Downing Street.
Almost everyone here has relatives or friends affected. Emotions very high about the killings and the kidnappings with whole families wiped out.
Scared, helpless and anxious, the trauma is a collective one.
One Israeli who attended the candle-lit vigil was Chana Wine. She was supposed to be back in Israel today.
“I'm currently stuck here. My flight got cancelled. I have a close friend who's missing, she's probably been taken into Gaza, I don't know what's happening to her."
Quote Message: I don't think anyone here gets how bad the situation is there. Every single person I know, every boy I know has been drafted. People have been murdered in cold blood.”

I don't understand these masses of pro Palestine protesters, who “hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.” Hamas initiated the hostilities and savagery, bombing sites and killing and kidnapping innocent people.
What was Israel supposed to do? Sit back and let it happen?

Sure.
They’re ready to talk ceasefire because they know Israel is getting ready to unleash on them.
They’re ready to talk ceasefire while threatening to start executing hostages.
So their goal was to slaughter innocent people including the elderly, mothers, children. Not just to kill them but to humiliated them.
Finish them.

There should be no truce until Hamas is wiped out. You don't start a firestorm like this and then 3 days in decide that maybe you want a truce. If they are not stopped now they will never be stopped. All JMO
