A trial opened Tuesday for a homeless man accused of manslaughter in the 2016 drowning of a 19-year-old Wisconsin student whose body was found in the Tiber River soon after he arrived in Rome for a summer study program.

Defendant Massimo Galioto was in court for the hearing, which established witness lists and evidence to be submitted at trial.

The next hearing was scheduled for May 16.

A 44-year-old Roman homeless man on Friday was acquitted of murdering a 19-year-old American student by pushing him into the Tiber River where he drowned in 2016.

Massimo Galioto denied the charges and said Solomon tripped and fell accidentally.

Galioto’s defense lawyer, Attorney Michele Vincelli said throughout the trial that his client was “very calm because he has a clear conscience”.
