His duty, but he was off duty. He didn't put his life first, he felt it was only human to help others. He calls himself a normal man. Wonder what that makes the other guy?

According to some of the passengers, Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" was playing during the accident.

aThere was a loud crunch and then the song was interrupted by an announcement that said there was an electrical fault.

The theme song from the movie "Titanic" was supposedly playing at the time of the accident, and this is the 100th anniversary year of its sinking. Freaky.

Also, a woman whose grandmother survived the Titanic disaster, was on the ship.

Speaking of which, I am anxious to see the results of "the Chicken's" blood tests. Some reports/rumors have indicated he was drunk. But I am also wondering about drugs.

Hopefully, there will not be an oil spill. Fingers crossed. What about the cost of the damage of the ship? There was a man on the news talking about how they will decide what to do with the ship. If it can be repaired, it will probably be millions of dollars to repair it back to its original state. If not, it will have to be taken apart piece by piece and then removed. No telling what that will cost!!!! Do Captains have to buy insurance? Just wondering. I'm sure if he does have insurance of some kind, it won't cover the cost of damages.

I think he will have several lawsuits coming his way. Don't think that anyone will ever get a penny from :chicken: though. :twocents:

Praying that all the vicitms will be recovered soon for the families.

Bravo to the divers, Coast Guard, and all the people helping everyone impacted by this tragedy.

I'm sure that the fallout from this incident will be far-reaching, and I also hope that it will bring about some necessary changes in current emergency drill procedures. When DH and I embark on a cruise in less than two weeks, I expect to see a much more serious approach to passenger muster. DH and I have always taken the emergency drill seriously, but not everyone does.

* While DH and I have never left our embarkation port without mustering, I know that the international maritime requirement dictates "within 24 hours of departure". Obviously, passengers on the Concordia were not mustered when they set sail and were clueless about emergency procedures in the midst of a catastrophe. This is totally unacceptable, and cruise passengers should demand a change in these laws.

* Attendance at pre-sailaway muster on any ship on which we've sailed hasn't been "mandatory". Late-arriving passengers are excused but told that they "should" attend a muster the following morning. On one of our cruises, DH and I boarded when muster was already underway. We know that there were dozens of other late-embarking passengers because they were on the ship's shuttle along with us, but we were the only people to show up at muster the next morning! Those passengers should have been hauled out of bed, away from the pool, breakfast, or wherever they were and made to attend - even if it meant announcing their names over the ship's loudspeaker system - like the cruise lines do on disembarkment day when passengers' credit cards don't pass muster

* Passengers who simply don't want to "waste their time" attending the muster drill should not be able to get in the shower to get ready for dinner so they can skip the drill. Upon entering staterooms during the cabin sweep, crew members should be given the authority to tell these passengers to get out of the shower and get their behinds to the muster drill. When we boarded late, our cabin steward knew about our situation and reminded us of the morning muster drill that we attended.

* Passengers should not be allowed to enter their muster stations with an alcoholic beverage in hand. To do so suggests a "party" atmosphere, and the emergency drill is SERIOUS.

We are going on a cruise for New Year's Eve 2013...with Carnival. Never been on Carnival but it was our friends decision so...

I'm not worried. Both cruises I've been on require the safety/evacuation drill prior to leaving port. I'm one of the most paranoid people when it comes to safety. If I'd seen the lights flicker and the ship list, I've had already retrieved my life jacket and found the life boat deck. In addition, Mr. zig and I were wondering why everyone was waiting for boats when they had a life jacket with a strobe light on it...why didn't more people jump in the water?? - they were so close to shore and there were rescue boats. I would much rather take my chances with the sea than idiots on the ship either misdirecting or improperly implementing the procedures. Of course, I can swim and am not afraid of water or the ocean per se. Was it fear?

You will have allot of fun! Honestly this is very bizarre.
The chicken went off course and didn't follow his orders.
I have cruised and Carnival is my favorite.
DH and I were talking at night we could see about 4 other ships around us at all times, close enough for an SOS.
In this case where were the other ships?
To far away?

I really doubt he is suicidal. If he wasn't afraid to die, he wouldn't have gotten of the ship before passengers evacuated.
