Captain in Italian cruise ship disaster hears evidence in court

The former captain of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise liner came to an Italian court on Monday to hear the evidence against him, while passengers who survived the Jan. 13 collision in which 32 died showed up to look him in the eye.

Wearing dark glasses, Francesco Schettino used a back entrance to slip into a theater in the Tuscan city of Grosseto that is serving as a courtroom. He made no comment to reporters outside.

Packed court as shipwreck captain hears evidence

By FRANCES D'EMILIO, AP

GROSSETO, Italy — The captain of the cruise ship that crashed into an Italian reef appeared in court Monday to hear the evidence against him, while passengers who survived the deadly shipwreck and the families of those who died showed up just "to look him in the eye."

The case of Francesco Schettino, 51, was of such interest that a theater had to be turned into a courtroom in the Tuscan city of Grosseto to accommodate those who had a legitimate claim to be at the closed-door hearing.

Wearing dark glasses and a suit, Schettino used a back entrance to slip into the theater, making no comment to reporters outside. Lawyers said he listened intently to the proceedings, where his attorneys raised some objections to the evidence being submitted.

Thirty-two people died after Schettino, in a stunt, took his Costa Concordia cruise ship off course and brought it close to the Tuscan island of Giglio on the night of Jan 13. The ship then ran aground and capsized. Schettino himself became a lightning rod for international distain for having left the ship before everyone was evacuated...

HOW did this poor excuse ever get promoted to be a captain? I imagine there is a nasty background story to that and hope it all comes out in his trial...

Survivors still suffering after Concordia disaster

By NICOLE WINFIELD, AP

ROME — One can't stand being in a mall: It feels too much like the ship, with no visible exits. Another dreams she's walking on a tilt — a memory of having crawled up walls as the cruise liner rolled onto its side. A 4-year-old boy talks obsessively about the meal he had to leave behind when plates started to fly across the dining room.

As if the nightmares, flashbacks and anxiety weren't enough, passengers who survived the terrifying capsizing of the Costa Concordia off Tuscany have come in for a rude shock as they mark the first anniversary of the disaster on Sunday: They've been told they aren't welcome at the weekend's commemorations.

Ship owner Costa Crociere SpA, the Italian unit of Miami-based Carnival Corp., sent several passengers a letter telling them they shouldn't bother coming to the official anniversary ceremonies on the island of Giglio where the hulking ship still rests. Costa says the day is focused on the families of the 32 people who died Jan. 13, 2012, not the 4,200 passengers and crew who survived...

How fortunate that this disaster took place within swimming distance of the shore!

I was thinking about that too BBM, but we did not see anyone swimming to shore and there were so many on board. :waitasec:

I cam to the USA by Italian Ocean Liner called Al Italia in 1958 yes there was a bad storm, and yes we were afraid much of the time, the crew told us they had not seen a storm so bad in many many years. The boat Rocked right and then left MOM was in the Ship Hospital due to severe sea sickness, Dad had to hold me and brother down so we would not be bouncing off the walls.
I WILL NEVR GO N A CRUZ not ever. no way, no how.

OMG! Talk about a cold and callous letter! I can't believe they would even think of telling survivors they were not welcome. (What it seems to boil down to).

I hope these 4000+ survivors are suing the heck out of this company for all their physical and mental injuries....

Former Costa Concordia captain: 'I regret nothing'

"The former captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner says he understands why some people "hate" him, but has no regrets about his actions in the aftermath of the shipwreck that left 32 people dead."

http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/...costa-concordia-captain-i-regret-nothing?lite

Two things I noticed in this article:

1. He says nothing about his responsibility for the ship having that accident.

2. Look at this quote and the bolded red part. If the translation is to be trusted, there are any number of red flags to me.

"Everybody believes that I was escaping from the sinking ship," he said. However, Schettino contended he "tried to make an effort to make sure that I was the last one to leave the ship — from the sinking side."

To me, that he never made an effort, he only tried to make an effort. That reads to me that he never actually made an effort. Add to that his previous statements that he happened to "fall" into a lifeboat with his computer. He was a rat deserting the ship.
