Nancy Hardy, of Meadow Street in Amherst, MA, was at her home in Negril at the time of her disappearance. Hardy, 72, was reported missing Saturday at 10 a.m. after a person visiting her residence could not find her, and subsequent attempts to contact her were unsuccessful.

That is heartbreaking. In 2005 Jamaica had the highest murder rate in the world. It hasn't gotten much better in recent years. I am glad at least for her family there is closure.

She was wrapped in a blue towel, with hands and legs bound, and the mouth stuffed with a rag.

The police, acting on a tip, went to the area and spent over five hours retrieving the body.

Around 10:00 am on Saturday, someone went to visit Hardy at her Negril home but she could not be located. At the time she went missing she was wearing a multi-coloured T-shirt and a pair of black shorts. After several failed attempts to contact her, a report was made to the police.

Yesterday, residents of Fish River Road were shocked when they woke to scenes of police swarming the usually peaceful community. They were even more alarmed to learn that a body was buried in shrubs behind premises.

A member of a group of men outside the police yellow tape noted that the woman was a frequent visitor of a particular male in the community. That person, we learned, has not been seen for the last few days.

The police, who are leading the investigaion, said Hardy’s car is also missing.

Two people have been charged in the homicide of a 72-year-old local woman who was found dead in a shallow grave in Jamaica, including a 33-year-old man who had a common-law relationship with the victim.

Nancy Hardy was reported missing from her home in Whithall, Negri,l on Nov. 24. Hardy, who is from Amherst, was found four days later in a shallow grave.

Police have now charged Kemar ‘Rasta’ Grant, 33, with her murder. Cedric ‘Smurf’ Johnson, 32, was also charged on one count of accessory to murder, according to The Gleaner of Jamaica.

The woman’s body was found with hands and feet bound, and a rag in her mouth—I hope she wasn’t still alive when the men buried her in a backyard, but even with that small mercy, poor Nancy Hardy likely spent her last moments in terror and maybe confusion at Grant’s betrayal (Grant allegedly was in a “common-law relationship” with her). What a terrible ordeal—my heart goes out to her family and friends.

I am curious about whether that “common-law relationship” claim is based only on what Grant has told the authorities, or if there is some kind of official record or document that shows them to have been in a legally-recognized partnership/marriage. I suspect that the motive here has to do with money, though I don’t know what Jamaica’s laws say about an individual inheriting money/property from a deceased common-law partner...

Unbelievably, one of the perps is already out on bail—it would seem Jamaican courts, in this case, value an American woman’s life at a whopping $2400 USD ($300,000 Jamaican dollars). Talk about adding insult to injury!
