That is an incredibly powerful earthquake. We're under a tsunami advisory in san diego, but it doesn't sound like they expect much damage. I'm sending all of my good thoughts to everyone in the path of the tsunami and to everyone in Japan and the areas directly effected by the quake.

Stay safe Kat!

Here too (San Diego)...but we're in the Poway area, so far from it. From what I'm seeing in Hawaii, all seems okay (keeping fingers and toes crossed). I pray it stays that way.

My blessings to all.

Please God hold these people in the palm of your hand...

HI is expecting waves every 15 minutes over the next couple hours. They are expecting damage, but it can't be assessed for a couple hours. The small waves seen now are likely just a precursor.

I remember the last tsunami warning and the subsequent evacuations in Hawaii. I recall that nothing much happened and some folks were saying much ado was being made about nothing.

This may well be lots of worry about nothing as well. My only hope is that people continue to take the warnings seriously when issued. I think the temptation is there for Hawaii's citizens to stop taking these warnings to heart, much like some in tornado alley will ignore tornado warnings because they happen with some frequency.

CNN just said that authorities in Hawaii said it was a good decision to evacuate the coastal areas, as the waves are hitting there now.

As of 20 minutes ago, they are still evacuating Oregon coastal areas. The evacuation horns just sounded again. Kind of a last-minute warning.

The National Weather Service was warning of a possible 4.5 foot surge at Clatsop Spit, 3.7 feet at Cannon Beach and 1.3 feet on Washington's Long Beach Peninsula.

Thanks for the update -- dang, I thought it was over :( I've got the news on now. I love Hawaii -- bless all that are there.

And it still could be, there is no guarantee that it will be as bad as they think it will. But caution is best. At this point, it's acting like a normal tsunami. The water sucks out, away from the land, and then it gets sent back, fast and hard.

55 nuclear power plants in Japan that fuel 30% of the national power...

The government says there has been no radiation leak, and the one that they are concerned about has been shut down, but it still has fuel inside, therefore it is still a hazard. 2000 people in the area of that plant have been evacuated. (I still can't pronounce it's name, lol.)

I am very concerned about the nuclear power plant. CNN just discussed it! This just seems to get worse and worse.

I am checking progress in HI from a FB friend. He hasn't posted in over an hour. Hoping he just lost power or something. One of the tv stations lost power earlier per NBC.

Local news said even the Sound can expect some water level changes. Bellingham WA can expect a wave up to 1 foot. The entire Sound will likely experience water level changes and/or current changes, but especially from Whidbey Island north.

HI reports are varying. Some are saying that they are still braced and ready for major damage, others saying that they are expecting no real damage, and hardly much more than waves over a couple of feet.

It's a wait and see situation there, and as far as I can tell, their warning has not been lifted yet.

Sirens are going off again here. People are walking out of Honolulu on foot in order to get out of that area in time.

I do think you're right katydid. My Husband just called from Iraq. Those soldiers with him are very upset because they are there and we are all here. Bless their hearts.

I am going to go shower, I had been at the gym when this all happened. Sure don't want to be stinky like this for days and days if we lose utilities and water haha just trying to be lighthearted about it :)

Stay safe, Kat! I hope you are all being extra cautious and the damage isn't so bad.

It's just heartbreaking to hear about all those poor souls in Japan. That had to be so terrifying. :(

I can assure everyone, in case they are wondering that all of my info is coming from main stream media. It's kind of hard to cite right now, since I keep switching between HLN and FOX on TV, with CNN Live on the laptop, and the desktop broadcasting local news, which keeps going out on me, but that could be the computer...

Seaside beach is so level you have to walk out forever to get knee deep in water. The town is very level with the beach. If they get 3 feet that could be devastating.

Oh My! CNN just showed ariel shots of all the fires burning in Japan! This disaster is of epic proportions, IMO. I don't know what to say. it is akin to watching the horror of 9-11 unfold!

Stay safe West coast sleuths!
