KGW showed a cam at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. Looks like high tide as it is. Which isn't going to help.

Every time I see that debris wave hit that highway, all I can think is that they had no time. Nowhere to run. All they could do was hang on, and even that wouldn't hellped those trapped in their cars on the road.

back to news. There are four nuclear reactors in the danger zone of Japan, they have all been shut down.

The waves in HI are estimated to have hit at 6-8 feet high on the islands, but no reports of major damage yet.

Japan airports are being kept open as much as possible in order to allow emergency aid to get in. It's midnight there, meaning that it's even more dangerous than if it were broad daylight. There are many areas that have not been reached, and might not be until daylight.

Friendly advice: If you have the CNN livestream up on your computer, just ignore the chat...disasters seem to always bring out the worst in people.

8 foot waves moving 500 miles an hour could hit Crescent City, CA. Get to higher ground, don't think you can just go look at the pretty wave.

And although I understand the need for caution...could the CNN weather guy be anymore dramatic, lol. Excitable little fella.

Have they mentioned Depoe Bay in Oregon? The ocean is very close to the highway there.

Oh boy, they are a magnet for Tsunamis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crescent_City,_California

Crescent City is susceptible to tsunamis. According to Humboldt State University,[4] the city experienced tsunami conditions 17 times between the years 1943 and 1994. Although most of these effects were barely perceptible, one tsunami in particular extensively damaged the city in 1964.
On March 27, 1964, the Good Friday Earthquake off Anchorage, Alaska, set in motion local landslide tsunamis, as well as a trans-Pacific one that sped in three hours down the U.S. West Coast to the state of Washington. Destroying docks, boats, cars, coastal dwellings and surging up rivers with the same result, the tsunami continued down the coast.

My son lives on the Central coast of Ca.just 2 blocks from the beach. Of course I woke him up at 3 30 am his time much to his dismay. I just told him and his roomates to have a plan.
I've been following the local updates of which issued evacuations for his area. I called him again and he hadn't heard anything. He asked where I was getting my info from? I told him and he said "well we aren't too worried" and he was going back to bed. I told him where the local evac. center was but we have lots of friends there. Well 5 minutes later he called me back to inform me PD knocked on his door and told them they need to evacuate.
I'm sure he will be ok, but you never know.. Well mom's do!!

But you know someone will -- it's California after all :(

I've been up since the wee hours, and was telling DH about it. He switched on the news, and said "oh, that doesn't look so bad". WTH? I told him, you've been watching too many of those stoopid disaster movies. Then he said he's gonna see the movie Battle Los Angeles (opening today of all days). I said - why pay to see another disaster movie when it's right here on the television! Needless to say, our day didn't get off to a good start. I wish producers would stop making this trash, when all I see is reality when I see snippets.

Interesting how 2 people can have totally different interpretations of the same event.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone effected.

:heartbeat:

Your son sounds a like like my DH. Sometimes it takes something like that (police) to bring them to reality. So glad your son is going to a safe place. I'd rather be safe than sorry later.

Big hugs,
