Radiation level around that plant is 1000 times the usual level. 6 miles have been evacuated.

On CNN, they are saying that it still is not dangerous enough to cause health effects. They say they are evacuating mainly because of fear and trying to keep it from causing panic. if it were to double from here, it would be dangerous, and it will likely raise again as they vent the reactor. They do not believe there will be a health risk, as of now. It likely won't be anytime soon that the reactor is stabilized.

Tsunami alert for Easter Islands, Chile's coast will be the next area hit by the tsunami, within the next 4 hours, Easter Island within two.

RE the nuke plant, I'm seeing that 1000 times the level report too. And in the same breath, they keep saying there is no leak. So where is all that radiation coming from? What am I missing, or what are they hiding?

Please, please--Everyone make sure you have your emergency supply kits ready, and remember pet supplies for your pets, too. Remember to pack a can opener and water purification tablets. Have a plan in place for your family, in case disaster strikes. Know where and how to shut off your electricity and gas.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask me.

This PSA is brought to you by your friendly neighborhood CERT member and Administrative Coordinator. :)

(We didn't take first in state competition for nuthin'.)

Just sent hubby off to get 10 gallons of water, and cat litter. I have lots of kitty food, but never keep an abundance of cat litter - yikes. Now that wouldn't be a pretty sight if we were stranded for any length of time.

I'm watching my neighbors walk by -- many with cases of water :(

Death toll at 188 confirmed.
2 of the 5 US Navy ships are already in Japan, ready to offer aid.

PS: I'm in MI, safely away from the current issues and my bf just called from Walmart to tell me that they are mostly sold out of water, pet supplies, diapers, and running low on batteries as well. Insanity.

I caught this on the BBC twitter feed:

Radiation levels at the damaged Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant are continuing to rise. The Jiji Press news agency says the levels are eight times above normal. Its report also cites a ministry official as saying there is a "possibility of a radioactive leak".

First there was no leak. Now there's a possibility of a leak. Sound familiar, anyone? Shades of the Gulf Oil Spill.

10.12pm GMT: An AP news alert:

Japan says radiation levels surged outside nuclear plant, expands area subject to evacuation.

10pm GMT: It's getting light in Japan now, on Saturday morning. Reuters previews the day to come:

Daybreak was expected to reveal the full extent of the death and damage from Friday's 8.9 magnitude earthquake and the 10-metre high tsunami it sent surging into cities and villages, sweeping away everything in its path.

In one of the worst-hit residential areas, people buried under rubble could be heard calling out "help" and "when are we going to be rescued", Kyodo news agency reported.

From my local news via the AP

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (AP) - A tsunami swept at least five people watching the waves out to sea Friday and ripped docks out of harbors in California and Oregon, spreading the destruction of a devastating Japanese earthquake to the shores of the United States.

Four people were rescued from the water in southern Oregon, but one man who was taking photos in Northern California was still missing Friday afternoon. Coast Guard helicopters searched for him near the mouth of the Klamath River in Del Norte County, Calif., but called his chances of survival slim in the cold, rough ocean.

Bullet trains are stopped on the tracks, they have nowhere to go, because the tracks are damaged. Believe me, that is a striking sight to see one of them stopped, as we have all seen those trains in motion, and they are always running, they basically only stop long enough to unload and load...I keep wondering when I will go numb, as I have been watching this since I got up at 6:30 a.m., and I'm not. I almost wish I would...

10.45pm GMT: Now there are reports from nuclear plant operator Tepco that the Fukushima No 2 plant has lost cooling to three of its reactors.

It was one reactor in the Fukushima No 1 plant that had been the cause for concern earlier – so this news is certainly unwelcome.

10.34pm GMT: The damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor has already been leaking radiation outside the plant, confirms Japan's nuclear safety agency and the operator, the Tokyo Electric Power company.

Compared with the government briefing last night that everything was fine, that's a turn around.

According to AP, the continued loss of electricity has delayed the planned release of radioactive vapor from inside the reactor to ease pressure. Pressure inside one of the reactors had risen to 1.5 times the level considered normal.

That darn reactor scares the bejeezus out of me.. CNN just said that if the grid goes down (which it did), it has emergency generators, however those generators are flooded so it's running on batteries, if the batteries run out, it could melt down.

Okay, I've been reading around, and they deny there has been any venting. So this level of contamination is coming from a "leak." That's baaad, imo.

There is already a Wiki page up, and seem to be just a little behind-- as in the evacuation orders have increased.

I've been watching it all day to. This is so terrible for those people. Such tragedy.

On my local news it said the concern is the nuclear power plant. b/c of the pressure radiation levels are one thousand times the normal level and b/c there is no power they haven't been able to release that vapor to releave that pressure. They have evacuated 30,000 people but I saw on CNN it was 70,000 people.
