cat island updates..it had been said earlier it washed away

http://www.facebook.com/notes/the-conscious-cat/update-on-japans-cat-island/10150111228603992

I have a friend in Japan who managed to get in touch with people who knew about Tashirojima – people and cats are said to be okay, but there was a lot of building damage and they need bare necessities for humans and cat food… The Japanese organizations said they couldn’t help at the moment (my friend was very frustrated) and he’s checking for some other foreign organisations which maybe could help. He also found out that a Japanese defence forces’ helicopter landed there this afternoon. So that’s hopeful. Lots of volunteers are going to be needed there to help rebuild the island.

Didn't see this article posted anywhere and it was very interesting to me...

<snip>

In pitch darkness we enter Iwaki City. Apart from a handful of cars, the streets are deserted. Restaurants and bars have been closed. The blinds have been pulled down in the local Denny's. Even the 7-Eleven convenience store has shut its doors.

We spot a schoolgirl waking quickly in the dark. "I'm on my way to pick up my mother," she tells us. "We're going to the refugee centre. We've been told to stay indoors and not breath in the radioactivity."

Then she hurries off.

Heavens no - you :rocker:

It's relatively quiet on the newsfront -- another odd thing. No earthquakes for the last hour, no news on the nuclear front, not much of anything.

The IAEA said investigators in Japan found radiation levels have returned to normal at the Onagawa nuclear power plant.

Not sure I can believe normal levels returned so quickly. However, I'm no expert, nor do I assume to be. But my hinky meter is bobbing up and down ;)

So according to Japan - everything is fine, don't worry, don't panic. It's all goooood.

Hugs,

Mel

I'm not sure I believe them either, so I went searching the net and here's what I found:

"Dr. Busby said the reassurances being issued now by official sources and by apologists for the nuclear industry are exactly the same as those issued 25 years ago, at the time of Chernobyl. Risks were understated, as show by subsequent epidemiological studies."

LOL,it must have been pretty active this past week.

http://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/lava2.htm

We've only been here about nine months but the news and all the locals I have asked say that this isn't unusual activity from the volcano at all.

We've had constant earthquakes since before we arrived on island.

This really does seem to be business as usual for Hawaii and volcanic activity.

Just sharing what I have seen reported and heard locals say when asked. :)

Great news that they survived! Hopefully more food and supplies will be on the way soon. :prayer: :cat:

Am watching CNN coverage and they were showing people waiting in lines hours long to get into a grocery store for the chance to buy 10 items. Most people were looking for food mostly cup a noodles. I noticed that only a few people had on masks.. most did not.

If you look at Chernobyl, they actually tried to hide it from the rest of the world:

No one actually knew about the accident until three days later when Sweden published a report stating that it had found increased radiation coming out of the Soviet Union . In fact, the Soviet Union was doing all it could to cover up what had happened and assess the damage before the world could find out.

Of course, by then, the damage has been done.

Hi peeples,

You know what I find quite interesting. They are continually saying "this store is closed, that restaurant is closed". Wouldn't anyone want to get in there to find any type of food/resources. I'm not talking about looting, but shouldn't someone (military, etc) get into any closed restaurant/store available and hand out food, water, napkins, cups -- whatever!

Maybe I'm seeing it in the wrong light - but I just don't get it. I know the Japanese are very respectful people, but these are lives we're talking about. Open these stores and restaurants STAT!

MOOO

It's amazing how people talk about these quakes rated from 5-7 are so strong, can you imagine what that 8.9 must have been like, by comparison??

Absolutely terrifying, in my opinion, especially followed by the tsunami. It makes me wonder how many died just from the fear alone. :(
