Wow.... what a testimony to the architectural skills of Japanese buildings!!! I am glad it is felt to be intact, but a blast at a nuclear reactor that was felt 30 miles away, and we are supposed to think that is OK??? Hmmm.... holding out hope but being skeptical as usual (training, you know.... ). :waitasec:

For the titles not matching the articles, sometimes that happens with breaking news. Check the articles in a bit.

I don't know if this has been posted yet:

"The Pentagon was expected to announce that the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, which is sailing in the Pacific, passed through a radioactive cloud from stricken nuclear reactors in Japan, causing crew members on deck to receive a month’s worth of radiation in about an hour, government officials said Sunday. "
The officials added that American helicopters flying missions about 60 miles north of the damaged reactors became coated with particulate radiation that had to be washed off.
.........

"But the episodes showed that the prevailing winds were picking up radioactive material from crippled reactors in northeastern Japan"

You know it's bad when you can't even keep a running tally of who to pray for and it all just deteriorates into one big prayer of "Please, God..."

That's sort of where I'm at.

In 59 years, i have never seen and cannot imagine such devastation.

3 injured, 7 missing in blast at Japan nuke plant

Hi Suzi, On CNN I heard them say 2 were injured and 6 were missing at the #3 plant. I think there might be some misinformation crossing the wires because it is continual coverage and they have several journos on location now in Japan.

About a half an hour ago the reporter on CNN said they have 16 people working in that plant who are sick. I took that to mean from radiation. Did anyone hear anymore about that? The question was what about the workers at the nuclear plants ~ who is manning the plant to get the problems solved. So I guess the normal workers are still there. God Bless them all.

It's amazing how people talk about these quakes rated from 5-7 are so strong, can you imagine what that 8.9 must have been like, by comparison??

I've lived in California for more than 25 years, so I've experienced a few quakes in that range.

No, I cannot imagine an 8.9.

Moreover, for some reason, we talk a lot about Richter scale but very little about duration. One report I heard said buildings in Tokyo shook for 30 minutes after the 8.9 quake. (That doesn't mean the quake lasted that long; as I know from skyscrapers in downtown L.A., tall buildings are built on springs and rollers so that they shake instead of crumbling. Once they get started, they shake for a long time after the quake stops.)

But even though the quake didn't last for 30 minutes, it and the aftershocks have been lasting for a lot longer than any earthquake I've experienced.
