Being a mile inland wouldn't have helped japan b/c the tsunami went more than 2 miles in.

Question though: Their towers over there are built with springs and rollers so they move with the earthquake, so why don't they stay inside? Why go outside? I know the more upper floors must sway a lot, so why not go down a few floors? Were there even reports of buildings collapsing from the quake?

Plutonium in soil = beginning of the end. Japan is so screwed.
If one single speck can give lung cancer, and it's spreading through the air, more then just a few specks are going to most likely be everywhere on the planet, right?!? Gah. Today is my 25th birthday. I am wondering if I and everyone else will be around for my and their next one.

'temporary radiation sickness'

well that is certainly a play on words! The' sickness' in some cases may be temporary but the effects are cumulative. In fact, there are lifetime limits on ration exposure ((will have to look that up to find a link))... For example, I had radiation treatment for hodgkin's lymphoma at age 15 to my head and neck. The radiation, while in high doses, works because it is aimed at cancer cells that need to be permanently destroyed. While they use lead blocks to block other vital organs a lot of times there are side effects for example: all of the skin cells on my head and neck had the melanin affected by the radiation: I look like I went to the tanning bed from the neck up all year round and also burn easier in the sun. Radiation also obliterated the function of my thyroid gland and although cells are constantly regenerating in the body these cells are permanently damaged due to the radiation exposure. the hair on the side of my head that got radiated all fell out during treatment and did not all come back... The hair follicles that were exposed had their cell function destroyed.

So, in my opinion, this news story saying that the radiation sickness is "temporary" is grossly understated.... certain 'symptoms' may be temporary such as vomiting, nose bleeds, etc, but long terms effects are certain! What exactly they are depend on what systems were exposed and to how much...

Yes, we will all still be around and posting on WS a year form now. We just might be speaking in terms of BD/AD (before the disaster and after the disaster, like we now speak interms of before 911 and after 911)

Well, being only a week behind in reporting the results of the plutonium testing is no biggie. Considering that it has a half-life of 24,000 years. It stays in the liver for 20 years, in the skeleton for 50, and in the reproductive organs permanently. So no need to rush in reporting, right? <sarcasm off now>

Ingestion is not a significant hazard since absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is low. Plutonium is transferred to the blood stream through the lungs (inhalation) and can be injected directly (wound). Plutonium absorbed into the blood stream is deposited principally in liver and skeleton. The deposition is divided as follows: 45% to liver, 45% to skeleton, 0.035% to testes and 0.011% to ovaries.

Radioactive materials are removed from the body at a rate relative to the effective half life for that isotope. The effective half life is derived from the biological half life and the radiological half life. The radiological half life of plutonium is about 24,000 years and the biological half life is about 20 years for liver and 50 years for skeleton. The effective half life of plutonium deposited in the liver is 20 years and 50 years for plutonium deposited in the skeleton. Plutonium deposited in the gonadal tissue is assumed to be permanently retained.

Wonder why it took so long? Would it take a week for test results to come back. Just thinking out loud......

TOKYO &#8212; Workers discovered new pools of radioactive water leaking from Japan&#8217;s crippled nuclear complex, officials said Monday, as emergency crews struggled to pump out hundreds of tons of contaminated water and bring the plant back under control.

Officials believe the contaminated water has sent radioactivity levels soaring at the coastal complex and caused more radiation to seep into soil and seawater. Crews also found traces of plutonium in the soil outside of the complex on Monday, but officials insisted there was no threat to public health.

If I weren't so upset, I would probably laugh at this feeble attempt for an explanation.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. official Jun Tsuruoka said only two of the plutonium samples taken Monday were from the leaking reactors. The other three were from earlier nuclear tests. Years of weapons testing in the atmosphere left trace amounts of plutonium in many places around the world.



So now, many places around the world can also be held accountable? Am I interpreting this correctly?

I'm guessing most Japanese don't believe the downplaying either and are doing what they can, but really, what can they do? What can anyone do? I am not condoning the lying but unsure how helpful it would be to state that everyone is in grave danger either. What is the answer? Most of the people there have no way to leave and as far as I know, we can't do anything either.

It does make me wonder what we would be hearing if this had happened here.
