It didn't go from one to the other, exactly. Both usages have co-existed for centuries.

"" meaning cigarette comes from the English "" (usually spelled with one "g," though it can be spelled with two), meaning a bundle of twigs, normally used for burning.

"" (usually two "g's") (and "" for short) meaning homosexual is thought to come from centuries past when "sodomites" were commonly burned at the stake, i.e., on bundles of "fagots." But this origin of the word can't be proved and may be a myth.

My sense is that in American usage, "" meaning cigarette is pretty much played out, as you suggest. But as dingo says, it's still a common usage in other English-speaking countries.

Maybe that's because "" meaning homosexual has become so dominant in American usage. My (not scientifically tested) understanding is that countries such as Britain and Australia use a number of epithets (ponce, poofter, etc.), where we're pretty much devoted to the "F word."

Only Aussies who are ignorant use 'poofter'- and a 'ponce' is nothing to do with being gay here in Oz.

Well, maybe in downtown Singo they still call it that- but like I said, I havent heard that term used in years.

I still hear the word referring to cigarettes especially as they have just been banned in clubs and pubs, friends get up and say they are going out side for a .
I still use the word ponce (shouldnt admit it but I think it sounds better than ).

and ponce are regulary used around these parts.

It isnt just Singo that uses the words ponce and , I have travelled quite a lot, overseas and around Australia, both words are still used all over the place. Narla you need to burst the bubble you live in and experience life without the haze of hemp.

Well IMO any Aussie who uses the term 'poofter' is ignorant.

And a ponce is not equated with being gay.

The way we use it, it means 'woose'- which has nothing to do with being gay- anyone can be a woose.
