Johnny Depp is denied permission to appeal his High Court defeat | Daily Mail Online

"Johnny Depp's bid to overturn a damning High Court ruling that he assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard and put her in fear for her life has been dealt an initial setback after he was refused permission to appeal.

Earlier this month, Mr Justice Nicol dismissed the Pirates Of The Caribbean actor's claim, finding NGN had proved what was in the article was 'substantially true'.

The same judge refused Mr Depp permission to appeal last week, ruling: 'I do not consider that the proposed grounds of appeal have a reasonable prospect of success.'

The judge also ordered the actor to make an initial payment to NGN of almost £630,000 for the publisher's legal fees.

Mr Justice Nicol said in his ruling: 'In substance, the claimant disagrees with my findings of fact, but for the reasons summarised by (NGN's barrister Adam Wolanksi QC) the findings of fact by a first instance tribunal - particularly one, such as myself, who has heard oral evidence - are rarely open to challenge on appeal.

'In any event, I do not consider that the proposed grounds of appeal have a reasonable prospect of success - and that is also the case so far as the grounds of appeal suggest that I erred in principle or in law - and there is not some other compelling reason why permission to appeal should be granted.'

In the ruling, which was made public on Wednesday, Mr Justice Nicol gave Mr Depp until December 7 to apply directly to the Court of Appeal to overturn his judgment.

In his main judgment, published earlier this month, Mr Justice Nicol concluded that 12 of the 14 alleged incidents of domestic violence relied on by NGN did occur.

The judge found that Mr Depp assaulted Ms Heard on a dozen occasions and put her in 'fear for her life' on three occasions, including one the actress described as a 'three-day hostage situation' in Australia in March 2015."

Nice to see Dior are standing by Johnny in his Sauvage advert. Here in the UK it's been shown 3, maybe 4 times a day.

The savage truth about why Dior won't drop wife-beater Johnny Depp | Daily Mail Online

"He is the epitome of manliness... he is 'Sauvage...wild at heart'. That is the message behind the glossy advertisements for a famous Dior aftershave now appearing in print, on billboards and a TV commercial neatly timed for Christmas — but rather less propitiously, it must be said, given the events that have recently engulfed its star turn."

Lawyers for Johnny Depp tell Court of Appeal he 'did not receive a fair trial' | Daily Mail Online

"Lawyers for Johnny Depp have told the Court of Appeal he 'did not receive a fair trial,' and say the ruling that he assaulted Amber Heard and left her fearing for her life is 'plainly wrong'.

After weeks of evidence, which saw both Depp and Heard testify at the High Court, Mr Justice Nichol dismissed Depp's claim, finding NGN had proved the article's contents to be 'substantially true'.

But, in documents filed with the Court of Appeal, Mr Depp's lawyers claim Mr Justice Nicol's ruling was 'manifestly unsafe' and say they will ask the court to 'set aside the judgment and order a new trial'.

His barrister also argued the judge 'uncritically accepted at the outset that Ms Heard must have been correct in her allegations' and 'discounted evidence to the contrary'.

Mr Depp's barrister David Sherborne said the judge 'just accepted everything Ms Heard said, however implausible and however inconsistent with the documents.' "

Johnny Depp is looking towards a brighter future after a difficult year filled with a whole lot of litigation.

On Sunday, the actor shared to his Instagram account a black-and-white photo of himself with The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan on the set of the film Crock of Gold, writing in the caption, "This year has been so hard for so many. Here’s to a better time ahead. Happy Holidays, everyone! My love and respect to you all. Eternally, JD." Although the message is most likely in regards to the current global pandemic and the unprecedented hardships it's imposed on everyone, the sentiment could also be applied to Depp himself who, over the last few months, has lost his very high-profile libel case against The Sun and was also asked to resign from his starring role as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Although, he did still receive his full $16 million salary.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have mixed results in latest legal hearing over $50M defamation suit | Daily Mail Online

"In the latest legal hearing in Virginia between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, Fairfax County Judge Bruce D. White blocked Depp's attempt to have Heard's case against him thrown out of court amid a new law.

Heard was allowed to move forward in her $100 million counterclaims case against the 57-year-old actor after his attorney Adam Waldman last year dubbed her allegations of domestic violence 'fake' and a 'sexual violence hoax,' according to legal docs published on The Hollywood Reporter.

The Kentucky-born actor had tried to use a new anti-SLAPP (strategic lawsuits against public participation) law passed in the state last year to have Heard's suit tossed."
