Josiah was shipped off to the ALERT! academy for a year or two...I strongly suspect he has homosexual tendencies and that's the Quiverful way of de-programming the gay. Shortly thereafter he was announced to be in a courtship with what seemed to be a reasonably intelligent 17 year old - who proved her intelligence by ending the courtship after the molestation was revealed.

Not sure about that. I did see an episode where JD took his Dad on a ride along (LE car) if that was just a volunteer position would he be allowed alone out with a vehicle? Maybe just a perk for the show?

I know there's a lot of Jill bashing going on and I do understand to some degree.

However, back in one of the early threads, I posted that, if there were ONE Duggar who would break some of the bonds, it would be Jill.

I also believe that Jim Bob didn't know enough about Derick Dillard when he gave his permission for her to be courted.

First of all, he is a college graduate and one of two children in the family. When their son was born, Jill made some comment that their children would go to college if they wanted to.

When they met (through JB), Derick was a missionary in Nepal. JB accompanied Jill there to visit him. When they first met, future husband gave her a massive full, frontal hug. (JB quickly broke that up.) Their common goal was to be missionaries. Most missionaries I know have to raise the money to survive. I've been to many a church service where collections are taken up to support missionaries from their denomination.

Jill wanted to be a midwife. Her sister Jana went to classes with her since she couldn't go alone. Her midwifery goal was shut down before she could become certified (as in being able to earn a living with her training). She wanted to be able to deliver babies as part of her job as a missionary.

Now, Jill (freed to some degree) has finished her studies and is a certified midwife.

Now, she is attending language school so she can better communicate in her chosen way of life with her husband and son. I'm sure Spanish wasn't one of the classes she took while being home-schooled.

I'm not a very religious person, but I respect other people's beliefs. I do draw the line with cults of any sort. But I'm sue the Dugger patriarch is surely not very happy with his daughter's version of what he has preached to her all her life.

If the Dillards run out of support, they can always come back to the USA and they BOTH can get jobs to earn more to go back.

My sister in law is from a missionary family and her parents are still missionaries, as well as both sisters. Basically, I've been surrounded by, or participated in missionary work nearly my whole life. I have NEVER seen or heard of a missionary coming and going like this. Not only is it impractical, it defeats the whole purpose of missionary work. The biggest part, is to become immersed in the community. To mostly leave behind the culture you are used to and embrace a new culture and invest in building relationships and community with people. A great number of missionaries are located in very poor economies. One really difficult part of being a missionary, is that we truthfully don't know what it is like to be extremely poor, hungry, or uneducated, or repressed by society. In that way, we cannot relate to the people we are serving. That is why we leave most of our wordy processions and privileges behind, because they can be a huge distraction and deterrent to really connecting to the economy, culture, and people who are being served. It's almost insulting to go do work in another country under the guise of being a missionary, and then go gallivanting off whenever something cool is happening back home.

Yes, missionaries tend to raise money to do work. But they STAY, they immerse, they work. It's a passion, a calling. They don't go over until they are interrupted by goings on back home. They understand that part of being a missionary is sacrificing the privilege we are used to and the things going on back home. They FULLY invest and immerse themselves into their work.

Thank you for sharing your insights into missionary work! As an atheist I don't see much point in trying to bring religion into the lives of people outside of one's culture but I do appreciate those who roll up their sleeves and work to improve the quality of life.

I have family members who are missionaries and they have been away for years at a time, not even coming home for Christmas, family weddings, births, etc.

In fact, my sister's SIL (sounds weird) had one of her children on a mission and the baby was 10 months old before they were able to return home to introduce her to the family.

Also, it takes a lot of funding and grants to be able to serve on these missions. Frequent, frivolous, airfare is a fart in the face to those kind souls who gave money they likely could not spare so that these spoilt children could travel at will and spawn more parasites.
