Following Counting On in December, at least two more specials focused on Jill and Jessa may come in 2016.

Oh please TLC, what could you possibly need to air in December? We will see a very pregnant Jessa and Jill fake-crying. By then, Jessa will have had her baby! I can't imagine this show will be anything of interest to anyone.

A Duggars Christmas Special? Maybe they'll do biblical themed variety acts ...

I've been thinking lately about this whole Duggar phenomenon and why people are still talking about it/interested in it. I am really starting to think this is what the world of "reality TV" is coming to. These real life scenarios are what people want to watch. They want to see "inside" the life of a celebrity when darker days befall them. To see how THEY handle turmoil and watch it unfold in contrast to how the family down the street would handle it. Most people assume that celebrities live in a completely different world than the rest of us...that somehow their feelings are different - maybe they want to relish in the idea that money can't prevent this from happening - nor does a life of luxury offer reprieve from these life altering issues.

The topic of molestation and sexual abuse is HIGH on people's radar right now. People want to hear more about it - and maybe understand how families see (or in the case of the Duggar's - IGNORE) signs. Does the family "recover" from such an event? How do the dynamics of the house change? Are the abusers shunned within their families (adult or minor children)? Do the parents divorce/stay together? Will we get to see inside counseling sessions with the victims/molesters? Does the victim confront their abuser ON LIVE TV?!!
Are there families who DO overcome this and end up living "normal" lives?

It's all a world that (thankfully) a lot of people may not be privy to, yet maybe have a curiosity of how families suffering through it, cope. This IS reality TV in the sense of dealing with real life issues - not deciding if we are going on vacation to Fiji or taking an African safari this year.

People LOVE to see inside the lives of other people (celebrity or otherwise) and sadly, I believe this "reality train" that the media has created is destined to go down this path sooner or later. I'd like to believe NEVER, but money talks and if they know people will watch, SOMEONE will put it on.:sigh:

I see something of a thread in the "reality" shows. They tend to portray people who are assuredly NOT "just like us," focusing on extremes of wealth, belief, size (of family and of person)--and at times behavior (all of the addictive behaviors and so forth). Some go looking for exemplars already in existence, while others create them (dating shows, instant marriages and the like). It's the modern day version of a freak show, providing an opportunity to gawk, and to comment, and at the end of the day to feel superior. TLC may have created something of a niche with more humanized portrayals (not just the Duggars, but also Little People Big World, Jon and Kate, Sister-Wives, etc) that do not rely on the injection of alcohol and bizarre situations to create conflict. The seem to have selected families far enough off the norm that they can film "normal" kinds of activities (birthday parties, family trips, what-not) and have them be entertaining.

"Law & Order: SVU" Will Take On the Duggars in a New Episode

Well, this is going to be a doozy.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has made itself a household name through "ripped from the headlines" stories. (And for having Taylor Swift name one of her cats after Olivia Benson.) But an upcoming episode is likely to get even more attention than usual.

According to E! News, Benson and the gang are about to tackle a case that seems eerily similar to that of the Duggar family, former stars of 19 Kids and Counting on TLC. An episode called "Patrimonial Burden" features a reality TV family with 10 children that has to face some harsh truths once a 13-year-old daughter gets pregnant...

Five women have sued the Institute in Basic Life Principles, once a leader in the Christian homeschooling movement, charging that the organization and its board of directors enabled and covered up sexual abuse and harassment of interns, employees, and other participants in its programs.
...
The organization’s culture and teachings were depicted in the Duggars’ reality show, “19 Kids and Counting,” until TLC canceled it in the wake of the revelations about Josh Duggar. But IBLP’s philosophy continues to be shown on “Bringing Up Bates,” a reality show on the Up television network, about another family with 19 children, whose patriarch, Gil Bates, serves on the IBLP board and is named in the lawsuit.
...
Other women who have been counseled by Gothard have said he questioned sexual assault victims about whether they were dressed immodestly or had “lustful” thoughts. He also taught that sexual assault victims must “cry out to God” to stop the assault; if she does not, Gothard has taught, she is equally guilty with her assailant.

I can't even. Scandal after scandal and these fundamentalist cults just keep rolling along. How can the followers ignore the abuse of women - especially the women followers? Do the mothers not love their daughters? IMO there's some serious pathology at work here.

Religion seems to me to be one of the most effective smokescreens for covering up corruption, immorality, and outright evil, because it sets those who hide under it on a place of moral high ground, so those who question a religious person are made to feel badly about themselves.

I think that the Duggars provide a strong example of this. Sanctimonious grifters who will even cover up the molestation of their own children so as to keep a revenue source flowing. That seems tantamount to pimping one's own children. Damn them.

I can only hope SVU doesn't make a has of this story the way they did with their fictional depiction of Casey Anthony. Remember, child missing, mother dumped body... and it turns out baby died of measles. The parents of the kid who passed on the measles were prosecuted for not vaccinating their kid. THOSE parents were acquitted!

^ That episode was very loosely based on Casey Anthony. The parallel plot was a major fail. :moo:

I don't see any proof that she is NOT standing by her man?
Just because that house is being sold doesn't mean she is divorcing him
He is in "treatment" for 6 months and she is out of state.
Wouldn't make much financial sense to hold onto a house no one is living in?

Really I want to believe it but I'm having a hard time believing it.
I'll believe the divorce story when I see the divorce papers... filed by Anna. :twocents:

I also wonder if it was sold to a trust or whatever to protect Joshy from anyone who may want to sue him.

The SVU pattern is frequently to take two completely unrelated cases and twist them together. They did the same with a Michael Jackson style pedo case. At the half-hour mark it became a case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

So, I would expect the "ripped from the headlines" Duggar similarities to be the draw, with the story resolution landing somewhere else.

Holy rolling does have a long history.

Sadly.
