What was the 2019 real estate fraud suit?

(The charges were brought in 2019 but not settled until after a lengthy legal battle, resolving in 2020)

Josh Duggar, family values crusader and reality star, arrested after property fraud case

In 2020, [Josh] Duggar's company ALB Investments, LLC was ordered to pay $5,000 in attorney's fees and costs to a man named Carl Echols after Duggar illegally purchased a five-acre property that Echols owned.

How on earth that happens is beyond me. I've definitely noticed property seems to get shuffled around a lot in that family, but "buying" property illegally?!

(BBM for emphasis)

I am concerned about who Josh's custodian would be it says it would be a third-party person, but I'm worried they'd just let a Duggar do it anyway. Also, who would ever want to live with Josh? You couldn't pay me enough money to be in the same room as him, much less living together! I worry that there are ways around it that he would use to access the "materials". The best way to solve that issue (IMO) is keeping him in prison FOR LIFE!

She will never leave him imo. If it gets her kids taken away, I guess she will live with that. The religion (not Christianity, just their version of it) values men over children's safety. She is not in the best situation, living with soon to be 7 kids in subpar housing on the compound, but her own family, the Kellers, are very poor (her parents, at least). It would probably be better, financially-speaking, for her to stay on the Duggar property. Her parents also live in Florida which is probably farther from Arkansas than she would prefer to be.

I know someone who was arrested for solicitation of a minor (he was caught in a sting operation so thankfully he never actually was able to hurt a child) and a requirement of his bail was computer monitoring and he is not allowed to have a cell phone that connects to the internet AT ALL. He can't even send SMS text messages. I would actually be surprised if they don't require these things for Josh as well. He may also get house arrest.

I agree that Anna will never leave Josh. She's stuck. Her family can't afford to take her and her children in and I don't think they would approve of her divorcing him either. She has a brother that left their religion awhile back who said he would take her and her children in but I don't know if she will take him up on that offer.

IMO Josh is just plain broken and his own sick desires trump any empathy he may have for those who love him.

The paper trail of his sexual abuse of minors began in 2002. I find it difficult to believe that during the years between then and May 2019 he didn't download any child sexual abuse material. Or worse. MOO.

I agree...

And I wonder if he found ways to view the material SINCE 2019...

The article SPECULATES JD may be required to live with a third party as part of his bail conditions. It’s not a done deal. He may simply have a requirement to have no access to internet and children or he may not even get bail. It’s all still up in the air. This next week will be interesting...

I wouldn't call Josh's warehouse home exactly sub-par.

FWIW, I have a friend who bought a very low-end house, left the outside as is but renovated the inside completely upscale, including Japanese style bathing rooms and top of the line appliances. Also, I'm planning to downsize soon and spacious warehouses are actually on my list of possibilities as I'm looking for a large open central space.

It's definitely not the worst but it is really not ideal for 7 children and at least one adult. I'm also pretty sure fire and safety codes are being broken heavily there. I have never seen a window or other exit pictured in the warehouse.

I hear ya. I've been trying to find additional pics of the building to see what's on the other side. The side most visible has two doors.

I agree about fire safety and it would be nice to know if the building is fitted with fire sprinklers. If they can afford all those tchotchkes then certainly they could spare 5k for fire suppression. I have sprinklers in my old Victorian home.

The kids looked clean, well-fed and happy in the posted photos. I contend that if the building is fire safe then it's not a horrible environment for them IMO - other than being stuck on a remote compound with no playmates nearby. I don't see any backyard play items either. However, compared to Section 8 housing it's pretty damn nice.

But in the end it's up to Josh and Anna to provide an appropriate home for the large family they chose to bring into the world.

I think they are clean and well-fed, but I don't even want to think about the unrest in the home and all the horrors the kids may have been exposed to (that's not related to the housing situation though). I agree its better than Section 8 housing, but the Duggars are wealthy and own massive amounts of real estate in Northwest Arkansas, so I feel that should go without saying. I wouldn't be too bothered by the housing situation if there was evidence that it is up to code (which I really doubt it is), but I still don't think it's big enough for 7 children, especially for them to each have privacy. Jim Bob owns a LOT of real estate.

Josh's sister Jessa and her husband and kids live in a house previously occupied by Josh and Anna. The house itself is completely fine except for the fact that it had a massive black mold issue and was declared unsafe to live in. Anyway, Josh and Anna had to move out and the house was sold to Jessa for $1, but no word on the mold situation.

My concern about the kids is first and foremost being in that environment no matter what building they reside in.

Yeah, given that mom and dad Duggar have an estimated worth of ~ 3.5 million dollars, wouldn't you think they'd be happy to rent a modest 4 or 5 bedroom house for Anna and the kids and pitch in for food and utilities while Josh sits in jail? Hopefully they will. If Josh is convicted he's gonna be gone for a long time unless he gets probation. (Ugh)

BBM. Sadly, I’m starting to think the same re: Anna will will never leave him. Her accompanying him to turn himself in would make one think that.

I’m not ready to say that she would give up her children though. JMO

I am being an armchair detective here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're worth more than that tbh! Jim Bob is also reportedly the one who takes the TLC checks and divides them among the kids as he sees fit, so he gets a pretty penny from that too, but his large amounts of real estate are definitely where the money is at imo.

Jim Bob definitely owns a property in Northwest Arkansas that would be suitable. Probably several. He's odd with how he distributes houses to his kids. When she got married, Jill was given a super nice and large house. From what I know, it is suspected that he kept Josh on the property to "keep an eye on him". Maybe with him behind bars they will be able to stay in a nice home with enough space and windows, and a backyard for the kids.

The majority of the Duggar children like to stay close to the big house so they can drop off their kids there to play with their cousins, eat, etc. So I can't imagine her wanting to go far.

The reason I say that is because Gothardism puts such an emphasis on standing by your man, as a wife, no matter WHAT, even if it harms your children. But hopefully everything goes the best way it can go. For the children's sake.

Yes, the interior has been done up quite nicely! But why no windows?

I always find it fascinating to try to figure out in a family, raised as strictly as Josh Duggar appeared to be, why did he turn out to be a "Bad Seed"? It seems like his siblings are all living normal lives. His brother, John David, did not molest his siblings, go crazy with internet dating, seeking strippers, and getting in trouble with Department of Homeland Security.

What made Josh stray from the path?

Apparently Josh bought a fixer upper in 2015 for 55k. It was a 5 bedroom 3 bath 2895 square ft. house. A great home for kids. He sold it in 2020 for 318k.

I'm not up on Duggar gossip but maybe you know why he decided to sell such a nice home and move into the warehouse? Maybe he couldn't make payments on loans for the renovating?

I really don't understand this family.

It seems to me that once he was no longer part of the show "19 and Counting", and the new show, "Counting On", did not have Josh Duggar in it, his living circumstances were reduced. Substantially.

If you hear about any of the Duggar kids buying or selling any property, there is a 99% chance it's actually Jim Bob's doing. That was definitely some property Jim Bob bought and had flipped.

Jim Bob has bought an insane amount of property in Northwest Arkansas and does a large chunk of it under his kid's names, so I wouldn't be surprised if Josh had never even laid eyes on the house and was barely aware of it.

Why he does this, I'm not really sure because I'm not into real estate, but he has famously done this. The unmarried oldest daughter, Jana, lives at home, but "owns" several properties Jim Bob bought under name, including a building that used to be a tattoo parlor. He does this when they reach adulthood. Most, if not all, of the 18+ kids "own property" that they don't actually really own. It is really strange.

ETA: Basically, if they were normal he, Anna and the kids could've just moved there after it was flipped, but Jim Bob is weird. lol

I don't know about the laws there but in a lot of places, the marital home is not subject to capital gains tax when sold. This could be a reason. He is avoiding the tax which he would pay as a property speculator.

That makes total sense for him. I'm 95% sure the big family home is listed as a church to avoid property taxes as well.
