Kansas teen won't apologize to governor's office for Twitter post

IMO part of being a Christian is not lying just to make things easier.

That's just this Christian's opinion on the matter.

Apologizing for something you didn't do is lying IMO.

You misunderstand.

I don't mean to lie, and say that you did something that you didn't do.

But at times, it is beneficial to just say, "I'm sorry that what I said/did/etc. upset you."

It's apologizing for your part (whether intentional or not) in the situation.

I believe I explained my post a little better. If not, please let me know, and I'll try again.

I totally understand your point.

But in this case, the governor did say his office overreacted.

So either he believes they overreacted, or he lied.

I have been following this sporadically.

Isn't an apology what everyone who was upset about this wanted? Or is there something more?

I have no clue.

But he apologized and said they overreacted and that freedom of speech was very important.

It seems to me he was either sincere in his apology or he just apologized to shut everybody up.

He probably just wants it to be over.

LOL good point. I don't think people even know what they wanted. The guy said that his staff overreacted by contacting the school and Freedom of Speech means people can say what they want. Basically.

The girl didn't have the twitter post taken down and she was not told to apologize. Seems to me that the principal said that she should be careful about what she posted online because look what happened, the governor's office called. I think it was like a 'teachable moment" to encourage her to be careful about what she posted online because it was public. He then suggested she write an apology.

She and her sister went to the press and made it seem as though she was forced to apologize. And it blew out of proportion.

It's all been based on a lie. And IMO she's lying again now. She's saying the rally in support of the Principal is being done to put her down.

It doesn't look that way to me. Looks like a rally in support of the principal.

I feel bad that she's being ignored but I'd probably tell my kid to steer clear of her as well since she's still talking to the press, I wouldn't want my kid to get dragged into it.

I'm sure he does. It didn't really look good for his office.

The way I see it, it was a misfortunate chain of events.

Should she have tweeted that, probably not even though she had every right to.

Should the gov office reported the tweet to the school, probably not. I feel that was an overreaction.

Should the school have requested an apology? Well I don't know. Depends on what the apology was for. The fact that she was tweeting on a school field trip or the fact she gave her opinion of the gov?

Should her older sister have went to the media? I don't know. I guess if they felt that strongly about it, that would be a way to respond.

As I said, IMO it was a long chain of events where I don't see anyone as 100% right or 100% wrong.

The governor is a highly respected experienced government leader and most likely apologized because of the realization that this was being misreported and blown out of proportion to what really occurred. This family held a "meeting" and assigned the sister to drum up media attention for the purpose of MEDIA ATTENTION. They set out to provide information that was a lie-- as has been admitted to by both girls now. She/they lied about what she said to the governor, lied about what happened with the principal, lied in interviews about it, etc.

There is NO evidence that the supposed "mean" tweets are from any student at her school, or anyone even in the area at all. Interesting that she is now implying that others freedom of speech should be restricted from criticizing HER.

It's not criticizing, it's bullying. IMO

She said the governor sucks. She did not create a hashtag about him on twitter and call him vile names and say he should be ran up north (whatever that means).

Cyber bullying is very real.
It's also very dangerous and these kids could be charged for it.

I've been trying to find the alleged tweets and I can't anywhere. If they were made on her twitter page, shouldn't they still be there? Does anyone have a twitter account to copy the tweets?

I found this though

It is very important to remember.....there is NO PROOF that the hashtag was created by a KID at all!!! She chose to bring this all into the media, and I believe that the whole talk with the principal was an attempt to educate her about exactly these kind of possible results of her own online postings. He was exactly right she DIDN"T "get it" then and she CHOSE to make it far worse than it was at that point.

When one chooses to put themselves out into the media world and brag about one's own highly inappropriate language and rudeness......then she should be prepared to take what she gets. It was HER CHOICE to make it a public mess.....she is going to have to live with the consequences of her own actions. PERHAPS that is what the school very appropriately tried to teach her in a gentle request to apologize for being rude. If she had done that-----no hashtag to which she has taken offense would even exist at all.

reann what is a hashtag? Is it the same thing she created for the governor?

  • #276
So since she went to the media she deserves the bullying?

Somebody created the hashtag. Adult or kid really doesn't matter to me.

My point is, cyber bullying is a crime in most states isn't it?

  • #277
Wow! Actually Kansas is one of the few states that have cyber bullying laws...

There is NO EVIDENCE that she is being bullied....cyber or otherwise....

If someone does something that breaks a law then there WILL be evidence of that, and it SHOULD be dealt with as per that law.

If there is only her word that something has been said, then she has already admitted lying repeatedly......enough said.

The school she attends, and the district it is in are very highly rated and there is also NO EVIDENCE that they have allowed any student to treat this girl in any inappropriate manner. The very fact that she was called in and asked to apologize is a direct reflection of the way that her school expects and supports the proper treatment of ALL people with respect. She should be VERY appreciative of the kind of school that she attends for FREE every day.

The article I posted upthread has an example of the tweets.
