"Knockout Game" hits another victim in D.C.

This is disturbing, but why is it being treated differently than other violent crime? They can only think of a few instances of this game, whereas you could think of thousands of examples of other crimes. I read comments under the article (looks like a meeting of Stormfront posters) and while I agree that is horrific, the level of outrage is way beyond what you would see for any other crime. I wish people got that angry about missing/murdered children, but since most of their killers are white males, that's not going to happen. :/

Ridiculous
I guess the outrage should wait until someone dies, then it will be ok?

i am a little troubled by the media coverage of the last few days in particular, they do a 2 minute segment on it and for the entire duration they are running videos of these crimes taking place while they talk over them.

since these crimes are usually recorded and intended to be posted online for notoriety it seems like this kind of coverage might be a bad idea.

it does remind me of the debate when school shootings are covered extensively and people argue that it will only inspire more killings, but i dont think it is always established that fame is a motive in those cases.

here it is unquestionably the intention of the people committing these attacks and posting these videos to get them noticed.

I think the TV coverage of these incidents is doing a public service. Folk need to be street smart, aware always when out and about what is happening around them. :twocents::twocents:

i certainly wasnt saying they shouldnt be covering it, just that im concerned about their chosen methods.

referring to it as a "game" over and over seems callous even if that is what the perpetrators call it.

in the beginning of this video her tone and the use of the term "one hitter quitter" dont sit right with me, it does not sound like they are addressing it in a serious enough tone. (later on the tone gets more serious and the guy addresses it for what it is)

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/v...e-gardere-knockout-game-cheap-thrill.cnn.html

maybe the woman in that video doesnt fully understand the term, it is usually used as slang to celebrate the fact that someone was knocked out in one punch.

it would be like them showing footage of an innocent person being shot and saying over it "and there you see the victim just get waxed"

<modsnip> charged with hate crime after he brutally attacked Orthodox Jewish man at random in 'Knockout Game'

PUBLISHED: 18:38 EST, 24 November 2013 | UPDATED: 19:16 EST, 24 November 2013

"New York City police have arrested a man on charges of assault as a hate crime after a 24-year-old Orthodox Jewish man was punched in the face.
Police are investigating whether it was part of a so-called Knockout Game assault, in which the object is to knock out an unsuspecting person with one punch.
Amrit Marajh, 28, of Brooklyn, had just left a bar at around 2:45a.m. on Friday with three friends and was talking about boxing when the topic of the knockout game came up, police sources said."

"His victim, Shmuel Perl, 24, has said that he overheard his alleged attackers daring each other to punch him out minutes before he was actually assaulted. Perl was stuck once, but wasnt seriously injured.

Marajh was arrested on charges of assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime and released after posting $750 bail. His three friends were taken into custody, but released without charge."

The perps know that short of killing someone, they will get very light sentences or may not be arrested at all.

This is scary and could very well actually kill me...I have had many past head injuries and post concussion syndrome with the last few. I struggle with the effects daily and am super careful to avoid head trauma as it could be very serious...that is the scary thing though for some people this will be fatal or they could end up with brain injury that impacts them for life. Outraged and just sad for our society...I see no humor in assaulting people. :(

“This kind of behavior is deplorable and must be condemned by all us,” he said at his weekly National Action Network meeting in Harlem. “We would not be silent if it was the other way around. We cannot be silent or in any way reluctant to confront it when it is coming from our own community.”

Kids are randomly knocking out people [from] another race — some specifically going at Jewish people,”
he said. “This kind of insane thuggery — there is nothing cute about that. There is no game play about knocking somebody out, and it is not a game. It is an assault and is bias, and it is wrong.”

Feds: 'Knockout' attack was a hate crime

(CNN) -- A man has been charged with a federal hate crime in connection with what authorities say was a racially motivated "knockout" assault against an elderly black man, the U.S. Justice Department said Thursday.

Conrad Alvin Barrett, 27, of Katy, Texas, has been charged with one count of violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

According to the federal complaint, Barrett attacked the elderly man "because of the man's race and color."

The suspect made a video of the attack November 24, the complaint said. In the video, he allegedly commented that "the plan is to see if I were to hit a black person, would this be nationally televised?"

New York man charged with hate crimes for seven 'knockout' assaults

A 35-year-old New York man has been charged with hate crimes in connection with seven "knockout" assaults, including attacks on two elderly woman and a mother walking with her daughter, police said Saturday.

Barry Baldwin, a Brooklyn resident, was charged with six counts of assault as a hate crime, six counts of aggravated harassment as a hate crime, and other crimes for a spate of attacks between November 9 and December 27 in predominantly Jewish sections of Brooklyn, police said.

On November 9, Baldwin allegedly punched a 78-year-old woman who was pushing a stroller -- apparently as part of the "knockout" assault game, where people try to knock a random stranger unconscious with a single blow. The victim was knocked to the ground.

On December 7, he allegedly struck again, punching a 20-year-old woman in the back of the head in Brooklyn.

Police released this sketch of the man they were looking for in December.

Between December 21 and December 27, Baldwin allegedly assaulted five more woman, including a 33-year-old woman who was walking with her young daughter and another 78-year-old woman.

After the attack on the woman walking with her 7-year-old daughter in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, police released a sketch of the suspect. The mother was punched in the back of the head and knocked down, police said. She sustained minor injuries to her knees and hands. The suspect fled on foot.
