That’s a local case for me and I’ve talked to a friend who was a social worker before she had kids, she said that in VA they want families to stay together. DSS would’ve required drug counseling for the mother and well checks every couple of weeks. Not even supervision by a non drug addled adult. I’m furious about all of these babies.

One of the articles upthread said the two met last year in an in-patient drug treatment program. It sounds like they relapsed and the spiral led to this. His Facebook paints him as a professional as of last year. Really awful, everything about this is really sad.

Both parents are now charged with involuntary manslaughter and endangering a child.

The Sedgwick County DA's office said 39-year-old Christy Rollings on Thursday pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 2-month-old Patrick Kempton. She also pleaded to four misdemeanor counts of child endangerment. She will be sentenced October 31.

A tearful Kyle Kempton — guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his 2-month-old twin son — told a judge that he was ready to start alcohol treatment and wanted to tell his story so it could save others.

Kempton’s attorney asked that he get probation, not the 46-month sentence the prosecutor sought.

Instead, Judge David Dahl sentenced Kempton to 32 months in prison. That would be reduced by the time he has already been held in jail and trimmed more if he gets credit for good behavior in prison.
