Fred Iwert was last seen at his farm house in rural Washington County, Kansas on April 20, 1983. Fred's neighbor, J Ted Garner, was convicted of his murder but his remains have never been found.

The Belleville Telescope - 20 Oct 1983

J Ted Garner a Morrowville chiropractor will face charges of first degree murder of Washington County farmer Frederick Iwert. A Belleville veterinarian testified that he was "somewhat sure" Garner was the man that came to his office April 20 and purchased euthanasia solution most often used to kill dogs and cats. It was stated he wanted the solution to kill a horse.

Garner has claimed that he last saw Iwert leaving the Swirly Top Restaurant Parking lot April 20 in Washington along with a woman he met through and advertisement in Capper's Weekly. Garner claimed the two were heading to Mississippi. VP of the First National Bank presented testimony that disputed the rumors of a girlfriend. Iwert had visited the bank April 20 to take care of a past due loan and to borrow more money to repair pasture fences. The VP stated Iwert told him "If I do have a girlfriend I would sure like to know her name and her address I might like to meet her.

Iwert's brother first contacted the sheriff he saw his brother shortly after 5 pm April 20 at Frederick Iwert's home. Iwert's brother said he and his brother agreed to meet again at 10 pm that night with Frederick indicating he would first go to meet Garner for a treatment on his hip. Garner was a neighbor of Frederick and alleged that Garner and his wife conspired to steal Iwert's possessions.

Garner allegedly stole 27 cows, 19 calves, 2 bulls misc farm machinery and other real estate. Garner forged a bill of sale

Fred was last seen at his farmhouse on April 20, 1983. In 1984, Fred's neighbor, J. Ted Gardner was convicted of first-degree murder, forgery, and attempted theft in Fred's disappearance. Gardner passed away in 2015. Fred's remains have yet to be found.
