Man arrested for kicking toddler, yelling racial slurs at E. Wichita store

The Wichita Police Department says it arrested a 31-year-old man and is investigating an incident at an east Wichita Dillons store it describes as a "racially motivated bias crime."

Police arrested 31-year-old Riff Trace for "battery that was bias and racially motivated" and for resisting arrest.

Police say at about 7:20 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to an assault call at the Dillons store in the 3000 block of East Douglas.

"Through the investigation, it was learned Trace walked into the Dillons store and kicked a 1-year-old victim in the back, causing the child to fall on the floor," police say.

Police say Trace did this while yelling obscenities and racial slurs. Police say when officers arrived, Riff "was being held on (the) ground by citizens."

Lashantai Whitaker is the mother of the 1-year-old boy police say fell to the floor after being kicked by Trace. Wednesday, she spoke with Eyewitness News about what happened early Sunday morning.

"We were barely in the store and (Trace) kicked him in his back," Whitaker says. "All I heard was a loud thud and my daughter screaming."

She says Trace tried to get away but another customer tackled him.

She says when Trace kicked her son, he came up behind them. She described it like "a sneak attack."

What the heck is the matter with some people?

Based on what his grandmother and brother say in the article linked below, there is a LOT wrong with him that they have tried to address for years. They aren’t making excuses for him (his brother apologized to the boy’s mother), but this seems to be a case of mental illness/alcohol/drugs rather than racism. And sadly, both racism and inadequate treatment for the mentally ill continue to be huge unsolved issues. Innocent people like this little boy become victims.

He said modeling eventually led Riff down a dangerous path of drug addiction. He said his brother also suffers from mental health issues and has a family history of a condition called Huntington's disease which causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain.

Man arrested for kicking toddler during racist rant back in jail

Huntington's disease is a progressive brain disorder caused by a single defective gene on chromosome 4 — one of the 23 human chromosomes that carry a person’s entire genetic code.

This defect is "dominant," meaning that anyone who inherits it from a parent with Huntington's will eventually develop the disease.

Huntington's Disease

The Grandma makes it sound like he's been diagnosed with Huntington's, but the brother does not. Huntington's is brutal and terrifying to consider ending up with. I wonder if they've been tested to see if they carry the gene? Because if they don't, that would be a huge relief right? Though some would prefer not to know at all. It's truly horrific to know if you carry the gene you WILL develop it at some point. Horrifying.

I learned about Huntington's from this case I believe. It was a horrible and heartbreaking case all around. She pleaded guilty to assisted suicide and was sentenced to 5 years in prison in January 2003. Released on parole in March 2004. I haven't been able to find an update on the youngest brother.

Carol Carr | Murderpedia, the encyclopedia of murderers

Huntington's disease first appeared in the mother of Carr's husband. She passed it to a daughter who died from it, a son who committed suicide when he learned that he had it, and Carol's husband, Hoyt Scott. Eventually the disease left Hoyt, a factory worker, unable to move, swallow, talk or think. He died in 1995. By then Carol's oldest sons, Randy and Andy, both had the disease. On June 8, 2002, Carr killed both men in the room they shared at a Georgia nursing home.

Mom Charged With Murder of Dying Sons

Huntington's disease had left her two sons, Andy Byron Scott, 41, and Michael Randy Scott, 42, helpless — they were unable to walk, feed themselves or even think clearly. And the nursing home they were in made matters worse, according to the family.

Their brother, James Scott, 38, was furious about the quality of their care. "I went down to see them Thursday, they were laying there naked and laying in pee."

--------------------

It's a double tragedy for her remaining son, James, who is in an early stage of Huntington's as well. And the one person who best knew how to help him through it may now be spending the rest of her life in prison.

The attempted aggravated battery charge is just one of the seven charges that Riff is now facing. There are a total of three felonies and four misdemeanors in two separate cases.

In the Dec. 23 store incident, he also is charged with felony interference with law enforcement for allegedly struggling with a Wichita police officer and resisting arrest. Related to the store arrest, he also faces two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct.

In a separate set of charges, Riff is charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and with misdemeanor criminal trespass on Jan. 3. Police and said they arrested Riff after they found him with meth in a vacant apartment on North Market. The door had been forced in.

Ex-Hugo Boss and Emporio Armani model charged with racist kick of boy | Daily Mail Online

A former designer clothes model who kicked a one-year-old boy with his cowboy boot while shouting racial slurs, was charged on Monday.

Trace Riff, 31, was arrested on December 23 at a Dillons grocery store in Wichita, Kansas, where Lashantai Whitaker says he perpetrated the bizarre attack on her son Jhavii Fry at around 7.20am.

The crystal meth user, who once had a glamorous career modelling Hugo Boss and Emporio Armani, allegedly used the n-word and declared himself a white supremacist.

Police and witnesses described how Riff kicked the baby to the ground who had been holding his 11-year-old sister's hand.

His grandmother Twila LaRue told the Kansas City Star that she doubts Trace has the mental capacity to realize the gravity of what he has done. She blamed his behavior on Huntington’s Disease, which causes brain cells to break down and cause psychiatric disorders in sufferers. LaRue insists Riff was never exposed to any racism while growing up, saying: ‘We’re just not a family that is like that.
