Mother charged with manslaughter after 3-month-old drowns in Louisville motel bathtub

A mother has been charged after her 3-month-old baby drowned in a bathtub at a Louisville motel on New Year's Day.

Louisville Metro Police Department arrested 36-year-old Amber Winstead, charging her with second-degree manslaughter.

According to an arrest warrant, Winstead used narcotics before getting into the bathtub with her child. Winstead told police another person woke her up hours after she got in the bathtub.

The baby submerged in the tub and drowned.

Kiyah Winstead says she will never forget the pain she felt when she found out her baby brother was dead. The family has identified the baby as Ki'arri Winstead.

"My entire life, I've been an only child, and I've always wanted a younger sibling, so obviously when I figured out that I was going to have one, it was really exciting," she said.

The baby's grandmother is currently in custody of Amber Winstead's other children.

Investigators found Winstead had recent reports of narcotics use, and she admitted to using drugs throughout the day the baby died.

The judge set Winstead's bond at $100,000 full cash. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 17.
