A teen couple is on the run and connected with several burglaries and stolen vehicles, law enforcement officials say.

Charge the 13 year old as an adult too.

Hayes' mother said the girl had portrayed herself as being 19 years old.

"She would go in and write checks and she would come out with cigarettes and stuff, so I didn't have any reason not to believe she wasn't 19. Because normally you can't buy cigarettes when you're 13 years old," Tammy Martin said.

Chaffins said the couple's behavior is "becoming increasingly brazen and dangerous," and he said they had evaded law enforcement twice. The sheriff said he believes Hayes is calling the shots as the teens try to stay ahead of the law.

"He's a hard-headed kid," the sheriff said. "He does have issues with authority. Very rarely does he take responsibility for what he's done, and he has a history of making bad choices."

Hayes' mother urged the young couple to turn themselves in and "face the consequences."

Panhandling ? That is actually really good news. This kid is armed with two handguns, he could be doing armed stick-ups, home invasions, or carjackings.........instead he is begging for pocket change from strangers.

Tells me he probably isn't some vicious psycho that has a death wish.

The couple had been dating for about three months. The girl portrayed herself as being 19, and the family, including Martin's son, believed her, she said.

By the time her son realized she was a mere 13, "he was already done in love with her," Martin said.

When he hit the road, Hayes was running away from trouble back home. He faces burglary and theft charges in his home county, stemming from an arrest late last year, according to Grayson County court records.

He was planning to be at the local judicial center on Jan. 5 to find out if a grand jury had indicted him on the charges, his mother said. His case did not come up, but by that time the teens were gone.

BBM: I feel sorry for this Dalton Hayes-

The intense media coverage has led many to harass another Dalton Haynes, also from Grayson County, Kentucky, under the false assumption he is the wanted teen.

"I am not the Dalton Hayes that ran off with a 13 year old. I am the Dalton Hayes who has a job and a girlfriend that is about to turn 17. Thanks," the beleaguered boy wrote on his Facebook page.
