Crystal Rogers case: Steve Lawson trial updates

11:49 a.m. ET
Both the prosecution and defense have rested their case.
The judge has given jury instructions and closing arguments are set to begin at 11:05 a.m. CT.
Following closing arguments, the jury will then begin deliberating.
10:48 a.m. ET
Steve Lawson has taken the stand himself to talk about how he met Brooks Houck through his son Joseph Lawson. He also talked about the night Rogers' went missing.
He said Joseph Lawson called him that night saying he was broke down on the Bluegrass Parkway and needed help. He admitted to pushing Rogers' driver's seat up.
"I'll take the blame for that," he testified.
Lawson talked about Houck wanted Rogers gone and how he would have to talk to another man, Charlie Girdley. Girdley testified earlier in the week about that conversation.

"You've got some of the meanest people in the world working for you," he said he told Houck. "Then I went and told Charlie and he laughed it off."
Lawson said Houck never asked him directly to help kill Crystal Rogers.
"No, he never said that," he said.
Lawson says the property on Thompson Hill Road was known as a "chop shop" and his son would often take cars up there to steal them.
His attorney questioned why he didn't talk to police sooner, which Lawson replied that he "didn't want to man up and admit that I had" touched the car.

Lawson said he doesn't know who killed Crystal Rogers.
"I don't know if she's dead," he testified.

Steve Lawson is charged in the death of Bardstown mother Crystal Rogers.
During cross-examination, Lawson said Joseph Lawson told him to call Houck to let him know the job was done.
"So I did just that," Lawson explained to prosecutors.
After helping to move Rogers' car, he said he went back to the property on Thompson Hill Road to continue drinking.
Phone records show he went back and forth from there several times throughout that day.
A prosecutor questioned if Lawson and Houck agreed to lie to investigators about their midnight call during a deleted phone call on July 8, 2015.
"He said you can say you were calling about an apartment," Lawson replied, adding that he lied to protect his son, not Brooks Houck.
9:15 a.m. ET
The jury is expected to return to court at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Court ended early Thursday due to at least two witnesses for the defense not being able to appear due to scheduling conflicts. Those witnesses are expected to testify this morning.
Once the defense wraps their case, the trial will then move into closing statements and it's possible jurors could begin deliberations later in the afternoon.

Wonder why this person did not mention Lawson's mother testifying??

The jury now has the case.

In his closing arguments, prosecutor Jim Lesousky said about Lawson, "This man, by his words, put himself in the middle of a conspiracy, an evil conspiracy."

Lesousky indicated that the evidence is overwhelming.

"He knew she was going to be killed," he said. "That was the plan."

Lesousky said Lawson had conversations where Houck told him he wanted his wife gone. In grand jury testimony, Lawson said he took that to mean "deceased."

"Brooks' plan was to kill this woman," Lesousky said.

He told jurors they need only review what Lawson told the grand jury when he testified in 2023 and testimony from those around him at the time Rogers disappeared.

"We know from his words and evidence he was an essential part in Brooks Houck's plan to kill this young lady," Lesousky said.

As for a motive, Lesousky told jurors Lawson also admitted that to grand jurors. Houck told him he would give him more business.

"That's why he did it," for money, Lesousky told the jury.

In defense, Darren Wolff admitted again that Lawson was guilty of tampering with evidence but said "that's the extent of his involvement."

I feel so badly for Mrs. Ballard. I got a feeling she knows what happened but LE can't prove it. And not finding her body has to be horrid. Her praise and gratitude for the FBI said a lot.

I think she knows who killed her daughter and if the person who did it takes the stand her reaction will tell. MOO.

Not gonna lie. I may have danced a little jig today after hearing the verdict.

  • #773
do you mean 2 not 3

i'd like to see three more - as i'd include nick in conspiracy or at least cover-up, even though i know only two more are charged/facing trial

heck... i'd even toss mama houck in that cover-up mix, too.

I had the thought that it is perfect to leave this short trial in the "awaiting trial" forum. It took almost no time for a jury to establish that there was a conspiracy to kill Crystal and hide her body. That's a good sign, I think, for the murder trial to come. I honestly wondered if we'd ever see justice here. We're almost there for Crystal.

And of course, still needing justice for Tommy Ballard and Jason Ellis.

I have followed this case on and off through the years. I'm about 40 minutes from Bardstown so it hit pretty close to home. A Mother of five! A nightmare come true! The trial and penalty phase was swift for SL. And with nothing more really than circumstantial evidence. That being said.
I do worry somewhat because BH has an excellent Attorney, Brian Butler who has a very impressive career history. His biography is worth a read. I am hoping that the P has some kind of evidence against BH and that they are playing their cards close the their chest so to speak. I believe the son JL will be following right along behind his father SL. As always JMO.

The Houck family is as dirty as they come so I'm afraid they'll blackmail a juror or something. I wouldn't put anything past them, IMO.

Agree they are dirty, but I believe that Justice will prevail for Crystal, Tommy and the entire Ballard family in the end.

The family and her children deserve answers and these scum ball 'untouchable' criminals need to answer for their crimes.

Felony Friday, how awesome! Let the dominos fall, get them all. Justice has been denied far too long in this case.

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- For 10 years, the Bardstown community waited alongside Crystal Rogers' family for answers in her disappearance and justice for her presumed murder.

Friday, after a little over two hours of deliberation, a Warren County jury found Steve Lawson, 54, one of three men charged in connection with the death of Rogers, guilty on all charges — conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence — and recommended 17 years in prison.

While there were no cameras, cellphones, laptops or devices of any kind allowed in the courtroom, it didn't take long for word to get from Bowling Green back to Rogers' hometown of Bardstown that someone was finally found guilty in her death.
