Circumstances of Recovery

On May 6, 1999, two fishermen discovered human remains floating in Lake Barkley in Lyon County, Kentucky. The body was fully clothed and wrapped in snow chains and electrical wire. The remains are believed to be those of a 35 - 50 year old white male, approximately 5’6” - 6’1” tall. His cause of death was unknown, but the manner of death was ruled a homicide. The man had extensive dental work, including a permanent bridge, gold and porcelain crowns, and numerous dental fillings. He also suffered a broken leg in life that had completely healed before his death. Chemical isotope testing was conducted to estimate his geographical origin: the strontium and lead isotope data are consistent with a local U.S. origin of birth.

State police still seek clues on lake death
EDDYVILLE, Ky. —

No clues have developed to help identify the man found floating in Lake Barkley last year, even after pictures of a facial reconstruction of the victim were released Feb. 13, state police said.

“As of right now, we’ve had about six calls,” said Trooper Chuck Robertson, public information officer for Post 1 in Mayfield. “There’s no confirmation. With the information we got from the six calls, we don’t think they’re going to pan out. We’re still looking at them.”

State police and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department were called after a body was found floating in Lake Barkley about 12 miles south of here last May 6.

The body was that of a 25 to 40-year-old white man, about 6-feet-3 with brown hair. He was wearing a white “NO FEAR” T-shirt, a navy blue lightweight Dallas Cowboys windbreaker, and a green Reebok windbreaker. The man also wore blue jeans, white socks and white tennis shoes, size 10.

Anyone with information on the identity of the victim or the crime is asked to notify the Post 1 at 800-222-5555, 856-3721, 575-7228 or 388-9111.

The body of this victim was found floating in Lake Barkley. His body was wrapped in heavy tire chains and the chains were anchored by an eight-ton hydraulic jack.

This crime likely occurred during the last part of 1998 or the first part of 1999, due to the vast decomposition of the body.
Chemical isotope testing indicated that the man was born in the United States.

Dentals: Available. Extensive dental work. He had spent thousands of dollars on dental work, including numerous fillings, a bridge, gold and porcelain veneers and crowns.
Fingerprints: Not available
DNA: Available

Both of these make me think that maybe he was from Texas despite isotope testing.

What about No Fear clothing makes you think Texas? It was (is? not sure they're still in business) a nationwide brand. And the Cowboys have fans all over.

The first result I got was for one in Texas but that was probably because of my other search terms.

I mean, he certainly could be from Texas.

This was my immediate thought - (per Wikipedia) “No Fear is the official energy drink of the World Extreme Cagefighting, and sponsors fighter Urijah Faber” I remember seeing their logo a lot back during that time (mid to late 90s), particularly cage fighting events.

No Fear T-shirts were very popular from the mid-1990s to early-2000s, peculiarly not having been endorsed by any celebrities. Shirts typically featured existential slogans or quotes that touted the virtues of extreme sports. Common themes included fear of death, lack of laziness, contempt for social norms, and the law.”

ETA: close up of shirt, the roses and barbed wire might be unique, I wish it had a pic of the front side...

Very popular with the skateboard, snowboard, and freestyle skiing crowd, too.

Weighted down with semi tire chains and and an 8 ton jack makes me think a trucker is involved, or he was a trucker. The multiple coats signal an early or unexpected snow storm, and that he had no heavier coat available

He reminds me a lot of Elvin Crist . I can’t find a whole lot about Elvin but the circumstances of his disappearance are a little strange IMO. As far as basic description goes, he fits. There’s no mention of dental work or broken legs but that doesn’t surprise me. I’m going to see what else I can locate about him or his disappearance, but I wanted to post here and see if anyone else saw the resemblance. Something about his nose...

(I just flipped the recon, it doesn’t help much for comparing but that’s the only photo I’ve found of Elvin)

I’d be interested in knowing more about the circumstances behind his disappearance...

I searched (mostly) Texas missing persons and ones that had the means to afford this amount of dental work. At least based off of the information provided, seemed like they would have been able to. Also any ties to Catholicism or an 8-ton hydraulic jack...Just a few. This UID is built like a Mac truck! The consensus seemed to say he was closer to 6 feet 3 inches tall. So I kept that in mind also...

Disappeared after going for a swim during the night, a towel was found on the shore but there’s been no sign of him since. Ground, aerial and underwater searches conducted then and later...nothing. A 35-foot cruiser that had recently been repaired following a few off-shore trips to the Gulf of Mexico, might have an 8 ton hydraulic jack conveniently tucked away somewhere...(a search of newspaper archives yielded some interesting facts, IMO)

I see a VERY strong resemblance. The way the face slopes back from the nose in both directions, especially.

In case anybody's not familiar with equipment--an "8-ton hydraulic jack" doesn't weigh 8 tons. That means its lift capacity is 8 tons. It's a common model to find around barns and shops, anywhere you might need to lift a vehicle larger than a car or pickup. Like changing the tire on a tractor, or something. Most farms would have one, and many if not most working pickups and trucks might carry one in the back routinely. I know my dad did, back when he was making roadside calls for trucks and going out in the fields to repair harvest equipment. In fact I think he had two.

Here's a popular model, for sale at Tractor Supply. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/big-red-8-ton-bottle-jack. There are other designs and styles as well. Notice it's not very big and not very expensive.

oh I remember the “No fear” shirts. Almost every skater kid I went to school with had them, and I remember the cage fighting matches on tv seeing the men wear them. People in my hometown spray painted “no fear” on an apartment in an ally yeeears ago and it’s still there. I recently seen a couple shirts at a thrift shop and instantly said “whoa remember these?!” Definitely a blast from the past.
Whoever did this to this poor man obviously wasn’t expecting him to be found. Inhumane people, makes me sick.

my grandma had similar thingies like that in her jewelry box and they were either pins, little medallions, or buttons tho. I tried to save the image and mess with the filters to read out what it says but I can’t get it to work, the letters are too grainy in the pic. Does it say anything about it on NamUs? I couldn’t get the link to get me to John Does case.
