Day Five:

• KSP said yesterday they have no reason to believe Couch is not in Daniel Boone National Forest.
• The USDA announced certain parts of the Sheltowee Trace Trail would be closed.
• There is no scheduled news conference today but LE will update as information becomes available.
• There is a reward of $35,000 for any info leading to the arrest of Joseph Couch.

Kentucky residents remain fearful as search for I-75 shooter continues

Several area school districts remained closed on Tuesday while a few others shifted to remote learning as the search for Joseph Couch, 32, stretched into a fourth day.

Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Scottie Pennington said troopers had been brought in from across the state to aid in the search. He described the extensive search area as “walking in a jungle,” with machetes needed to cut through thickets.

Crazy but I hiked a section of Sheltowee Trace Trail just last month. I was working in the area and decided to take a day of hiking before heading home.

I don't see this guy as someone living as a fugitive in the woods. For some reason, he doesn't strike me as the type to survive (quietly) trapping small animals for food and/or sustaining himself on nuts and berries.

I'm thinking that if he lived in the mountains of Kentucky when he was growing up, he would be familiar with the mountains and have some outdoorsman skills.

And since he was in the U.S. Army, he likely had outdoor survival training and stealth concealment training.

So it's quite possible that he could live out in the woods.

I suppose, but I don’t think his mental state indicates that he intended to do that, nor do I think he was at all prepared for that.

All things considered, he inflicted a great deal less damage than he could have. He had enough ammo to fill dozens of magazines, yet appears to have only fired one before taking off.

It’s like he had this big grand plan in his mind, and then suddenly decided to half it.

I think he freaked out or lost his nerve, but entered the woods as he intended. Starving, tired, eaten alive by bugs; if he didn’t have the guts to kill himself right away, I think he did eventually.

After the fact getaway transport. Transport, subsequent concealment, not necessarily involved in the commission of the initial shootings.

There was an incident that happened at approximately 2:00 pm today in Hazard, Kentucky near exit 59 on the Hal Rogers Parkway where a vehicle was hit by a bullet.

The driver thought a rock had hit the vehicle, and found a bullet in the bottom of the windshield after arriving home.

The driver reported that incident ti the police and it caused schools near where the incident occurred to be placed in lockdown this afternoon. The driver was not injured from that incident.

Hazard, Kentucky is 60 miles east of London, Kentucky.

The concern here is that this copy cat incident is going to cause folks to be fearful of driving on the highways in the Eastern Kentucky region.

Not only can the terrain in the mountains of Kentucky be difficult to walk through, there's all kinds of wild animals in the mountains too.

Venomous snakes are known to hide in the high grass and weeds.

One can easily encounter bears, coyotes, deers, and skunks while walking in the mountains.

Wild animals can also hide in cave and rock cliff openings, and in any holes in the ground.

And you have to watch out for booby traps that drug dealers may place near where marijuana crops are growing.

The temperatures can be hot and humid during the daytime and sometimes it gets cold overnight in the mountains at this time of the year.

You just never know what you may encounter and you have to be really careful when walking in the mountains of Kentucky.

Those marijuana growers were def known to have traps near crops. 'Some also had cameras set-up.

I agree on a lot of your ideas. I think he cowarded out of his plan and couldn't complete his mission. He also cowarded out of his statement that he was going to kill himself after he "killed a lot of people". He abandoned his weapon, ammunition, and phone. He just ran. I really don't think he is in the woods. JMO

I think he was doing this crap to spite his ex-wife. Now he is in a quandry as to what to do now since he dumped his rifle, ammo and phone. Need to remember he had other guns. He doesn't seem very bright to me.

“He went in his house, grabbed an AR-15, pointed it at mine and my daughter’s direction, said next time he would shoot me and my daughter,” the neighbor said. “So, naturally, I went and filed charges on him.”

Charges were dismissed against Couch after the neighbor failed to show up to court.

And more recently, according the article, he threatened another neighbor.

“He went back in his house, and he came back out and he pointed his rifle and said, ‘I’ll just kill you,'” Causey recalled.

Causey said he didn’t contact the police about the interaction as they had gotten along well in the past, but now regrets that decision in the wake of the shooting.

I don’t know the condition of his other one, but he went all out with the one he bought. It was high end, and equipped with a top of the line optic (sight).
