Kentucky police: Woman arrested after dead baby found in trash bag

Kentucky police have made an arrest in connection to a baby found dead in a trash bag on the porch of a home in Clay County.

Troopers got a call around 7:30 Tuesday morning that the infant had been found dead inside a trash bag.

The body of the "hours-old" infant was found near the front porch of a home on Ham Hollow Road in Clay County.

On Wednesday evening, officials announced they had arrested 21-year-old Amber Bowling. She was booked in the Clay County Detention Center.

Officials say that Bowling said she gave birth on Sunday, put the baby in a trash bag and threw the newborn over the upstairs banister of the complex.

The autopsy results showed the baby had cranial bleeding and fractured ribs.

A preliminary autopsy report showed the baby died of blunt force trauma to the head and chest. The temperature was in the mid-20s when he got to the scene. The baby apparently had been outside in the bag for several hours.

Amber Bowling, 21, of Manchester, Kentucky, is accused of killing her newborn shortly after giving birth to the boy.

An autopsy revealed the newborn suffered cranial bleeding and fractured ribs.

The court appointed Bowling a public defender who entered a not guilty plea on her behalf during the arraignment.

Bowling's uncle was in the courtroom for the arraignment. He says the entire family is shocked over the case, and Bowling's actions were out of character.

Bowling's next court appearance is Mar. 4 for a pre-trial hearing.

Monday, in circuit court, a judge declared Bowling competent to stand trial. Since her arrest, she has remained in jail without any bond. A jury trial is scheduled for May 19, 2020.
