GUILTY KY - Larry, 60, & Sandra Blanton, 53, Oil Springs, Sept 2012

To HollyBlue
I'm a Newbie and I was trying to quote from several sources when I captured something you said. I was offended by the term "hillbilly". I was offended by someones implying they have a huge drug problem in a forgotten America. Not your terms. In otherwords, us folks born and raised in this part of Ky. My definition of culture is all the characteristics that make up a particular group of people. Some of our so called language differences is actually old English or handed down by the Scotts Irish who were ancestors to many of us.

Where did I use the word "hillbilly"? I think I have explained myself quite clearly. I suggest you google 'mountain people of Appalachia'. You will find, as I knew, that much of culture is the way it is because of being isolated for so many years. While driving thru the state with my parents on vacation in the early 60's as child I was extremely surprised/curious of the "shacks" on the side of the mountains that I had seen and asked why and how people had to live like that. Since that encounter I have always been interested in the culture. As far as the drug problem it is second behind Utah with regard to illegal use of prescription drugs. Something I did not know. What truly has always intrigued me is why so many choose to not leave (although some try..and do). That is part of the culture also and am guessing it is the tie to the mountains and their heritage....as is shown by Sandra in her love for it. I also have never understood why tourism hasn't been explored as an economic relief...as in recreation. The mountains themselves are their treasure cove, but again, I believe it's the culture in some who don't want to let go of their secret in that fact. JMO

Are you experiencing any snow from Hurricane Sandy? What is your theory in the Blanton's missing? What do you think happened? TIA

You did ... a couple of times. But even if you had said something along those lines, it would be your own opinion- as is everything we each post. We all need to develop a thicker skin and not take every word expressed here as a personal insult.

Now, how about we get back to discussing the missing Blantons.

I think about Larry and Sandra from time to time....and wish we knew what happened to them. I had really hoped someone would tell what they know by now.

I was referring to posts that we are "hillbillys" to folks not from the area. If you are from the area, geographic or ancestors were..you can call me a hillbilly or a mountain person. But outsiders should call us mountain people. Most of us are scotch Irish with a little scandinavian and mediterranean thrown in. Melungeon, I believe is the term. One of the reason for lack of tourism is the lack of close airports and major highways IMO. Some would not leave for anything and some of us left to find work and returned when we could. The mountains are hard to resist, to me its the most beautiful place I've ever been. We did get snow from Sandy. I've wavered about what I think with Blantons. There is a lot of drug use...didn't know the stats. People who are addicts will kill you for oxycontin or methadone. Its a fact, here and everywhere. Nice to hear from you. Thanks for your post. Mountain people have feelings too.LOL.

MODS- Sandra's name is spelled wrong in the thread tittle.

I just finished finals yesterday, and I sort of laughed when I read this...(cause I have a Prof. that is forever saying I can't spell).. :blushing:

I actually posted her name from the news release, I wasn't sure if it was correct or not. Sorry :)

My thoughts and prayers are still with the Blanton's and i hope one day we find out the truth.

They have not been seen or heard from in three months.

Larry and Sandara Blanton were reported missing in September. Police say the case is turning cold, but family members say they still want answers.

The animals left behind are the only signs of life on the Blantons' Oil Springs farm.

"It doesn't look good. It doesn't look good at all," said Johnson County Sheriff Dwayne Price.

Out of state family members say the hardest part is not knowing.

"You can't imagine what's happened, why, where they are, if we'll ever find them," said Sandara Blanton's sister Lois Fraley.

Family members are not giving up hope, but as time passes by they say they really just want answers, whatever those may be.

"I'm disappointed of course that it hasn't gone better or faster," said Fraley.

Officials say they are at a point where all they can do is wait, wait for evidence testing to be finished or wait for any lucky break in the case.

"We've went down every avenue that we can think of. We've checked every lead that's came into this office both in person and anonymous. Right now we're at a standstill," said Price.

Family says the waiting is wearing them down.

"If we didn't have our faith in God, I don't know how we'd get through this," said Fraley.

They say at this point there is only so much they can hope for.

"We're focusing on you know bringing them home so we can give them a proper burial," said Fraley.

Police are still asking the public for any information they might have.

The couple's son, Willie Blanton, is still being called a person of interest in the case along with his girlfriend Amanda Fannin. They are both behind bars on other charges.

I still have faith in the Johnson County Sheriffs Department and the KSP. They will solve this case...

I had hoped that hunters would find the Blantons. I have little doubt that the son was involved with their disappearance; and I have little doubt that the outcome will be sad. I honestly wish I could be wrong. Why can't these creeps gain a little conscience and fess up?! It happens occasionally, but too rarely for my liking!

My heart breaks for this couple. I haven't heard if they have been found or not but I think it is so obvious what has happened to them. I hope they are still searching!

Article has been updated, not much new but the son goes on trial in April.
