He had a VERY minor traffic infraction a few months ago for which he paid a $30 fine, not anything he should have been concerned about if involved in an accident.

Defendant: COLEMAN, KYLE BENJAMIN
Address: GAINESVILLE, VA 20155
Filed Date: 02/05/2024 Locality: PRINCE WILLIAM CO
Code Section: A.46.2-1030 Charge: FAIL TO USE LIGHTS WITH WIPERS
Offense Date: 02/01/2024
Fine: $30.00 PAID

His mother has posted photos of the damage to his car on social media. IMO it's probably damage that would render the car inoperable, due to a front tire being constricted by the bent frame, but should not have resulted in more than minor injuries if he was searing a seatbelt. Still, head injuries can happen even in low energy crashes so I can understand their concern.

I am concerned about a head injury. I didn't see the name of the road where the accident happened but I am concerned about any water nearby. I also think this may be a 1 person accident, I didn't read anywhere that he hit someone. There are leaves in the fender so maybe he hit a median or bushes/tree? I'm just guessing

According to Kyle's mother, the accident happened at/near the Galleria Mall (which is in McLean VA) between the Galleria and Tyson Blvd (which surrounds the mall complex). Police searching for 19-year-old Gainesville man missing after car crash

From the google map, there are some shadowed areas so I can't be sure, but I don't see any obvious signs of water in that area or within close walking distance.

Local here and this is now getting a lot of coverage. Having heard reports, I assumed that the accident occurred closer to where Tyson’s Blvd and Galleria Drive intersect. There are trees and what looks like a man-made pond.
I see the pond now - thank you! It's not large, going by my google map index probably 75 feet by 45 feet. Depth unknown. Given the further information about details of the crash scene, I would think LE would have checked the pond by now, if it's man-made, it likely is fairly clear water this time of year. 19-year-old missing after car crash near Tysons mall

Local here- about a mile from the incident. This is an extremely populated area about 15 mins outside of DC. The area in which he crashed is wall to wall with two huge malls, restaraunts, hotels, office buildings etc. there is NO way this wasn’t picked up on camera in some way, shape or form. Also- there is no water anywhere close. I think they know more than they are telling us. Where he wrecked… somebody saw something. And I think they know that. Or have some info…. It is now receiving full coverage in the msm and beyond.

There is no pond near the site. I drive past it daily. There is a sewer system.

Fairfax County police have announced that they recovered a human body today from a small body of water near where Kyle Coleman's car was found crashed in a wooded area late Friday night.

His parents used an app to locate his car, which they found at a wrecker service in Fairfax County. When they went to retrieve the car, they found his cellphone and his shoes inside the car, according to news reports.

This makes absolutely no sense. As mentioned above, this is a HEAVILY populated, high traffic area. The intersection where the accident reportedly occurred (big pin) is within a block or so of two huge malls (Tysons Galleria and Tysons Corner Center), at least one movie theater, several multi/level office buildings, a bunch of restaurants, a metro (subway) station, 3 major highways (495, 123, 7), and more. If the accident data is correct and he just ran his car (or was run) off the road into the very small wooded area, someone and/or some camera saw something. No one called anything in?

Then what? Between the reported accident scene and the small retention pond where the (still unidentified) body was found is roughly 800 feet. The front end damage is fairly significant, but it’s hard to tell from photos if the airbags even deployed. That said, the windshield appears to be intact, so he probably wasn’t ejected. So he crashed into the “woods”? Possibly suffered a head injury? (If so, how, without cracking the windshield or leaving any blood in the car?) Then took his shoes off (or were the slides left in his car just spares?), left his keys and phone and took a short walk into the small retention pond? But…why? And then it took police with K9s and helicopters 4 days to find him a block from the accident scene? Again. None of it makes sense.

He was last seen at 12:15 am, so I assume it happened shortly thereafter. Just from looking at the map and doing a pretend drive thru on Google Street View, it looks like an average suburban mall, huge parking lots, very car dependent, not very walkable, compared to a downtown area where there would be people at all times of the day. it wouldn't be too outrageous/shocking for someone to not see something. Again, I want to iterate this is my opinion only based on looking at Google Maps so I hope I'm not too wildly off base.

There are quite a few missing persons cases that play out like this. Single car accident, person is able to get out, goes missing, usually found deceased nearby due to exposure. I really believe there's some innate, maybe even primal, survival instinct. Something that screams that being inside a car is dangerous and to get up, leave, find help.

It’s the leaving behind of the phone and shoes that is puzzling to me, if he was trying to find help. Unless… the impact had him severely disoriented.

Is there a scenario where he ran off the road intentionally and then willingly went into the pond when he survived the crash?

Like you, in such a populated area, I feel like camera footage or a witness would have been easy to come by.

Will be interesting to see what details are revealed after identifying the body.

It’s not walkable the way New York City is walkable, no. But there are several restaurants and bars in the area (some of which are gaining quite the reputation recently for serving alcohol to minors). Add to that the movie theater and the metro, which is a 15 minute ride to DC. So even if there wasn’t much foot traffic, there would be plenty of car traffic around midnight on a Friday night - enough to make it seem highly unlikely that he was the only car near that intersection when he ran off the road.

I also just realized that to my knowledge, even though this is a big story, LE hasn’t done their typical plea for witnesses. Makes me wonder if they do have something on camera. (And again, I would be shocked if they didn’t given that there are cameras on just about every corner these days.) What may they have seen? Was he alone in the car? If he was “out with friends”, one of them may have been with him. I wonder if the friends are being closely looked at. (Can’t really imagine that they aren’t.)

I agree about the instinct to get out of a wrecked car, though. I guess for that matter, that’s kind of what everyone does. It’s just that we only hear about it in the very few cases in which doing leads to a mystery.
