I heard on Nancy Grace's show that the owners turned themselves in and were released on their own recognizance(sp?). Didn't even have to post bail!
No jail to put them in anyway, I suppose.

CNN, Paula Zahn: Families that called, according to nurse Tammy Dagle, were told that they were welcome to come pick up their loved ones but the home was not planning on moving them. Said "so many of these storms have turned at the last minute....".

So, they're safe in Baton Rouge where they were able to evacuate themselves, but not their poor patients...........just freakin disgusting :furious:

I bet a lot of families will be looking for them, I know I would if my mom had been in their care and left to drown.

Oh great, a lot of the families probably didn't even live in the area, so how in the hell were they going to get their loved ones out of there?

When my mom was in a rehab. after surgery she was 20 miles from me and I was able to go there daily...........BUT, not all the these families lived nearby, and then with the flood wouldn't have been able to get to them anyway.

You know, that's a good point TG. I would be very worried if I were in their shoes.

I hope they worry themselves into a Coma :D and then left without any type of care.

My son inlaw (a TexMex by the way) who lives in Riverside, CA has family in San Antonio & checks regularly with his two elderly aunts who insist in living alone.

Now, if that area would have been NO, what could he have done.......nothing, nadda! I know what action he would now be taking if they were living in a Elder Care facility however, and it wouldn't be legal :innocent:

Yes, I know. But I am wondering if those hospitals emergency evacuation plans were followed. There has been talk that their plans were not followed completely. To me, that would be just as negligent as the nursing home failing to follow their evacuation plan.

You know if nursing homes have to have a state filed evacuation plan a hospital has to also. I wonder what portion they did or didn't follow. And they were discussing the "reports" of euthanizing some of the patients at Mercy, and said if this proved true, the law in LA does not allow for assisted death and those doctors could be charged.

 I'm glad the owners are being charged, this story really bothered me. Bedridden and elderly and left to drown, absolutely horrendous! Lock 'em up! :behindbar

I agree with these people being charged but it seems to me the governor and mayor are guilty of the same offenses. They supposedly had an evacuation plan. They failed to follow it. People drowned because of their failures.

Nancy had on her show last night a son of one of the patients at St. Rita's. Poor guy. He said he ran into one of the aides and she just burst out crying and apologizing because she couldn't save his father.

Louisiana's attorney general said the deaths of 34 residents of a St. Bernard Parish nursing home is one of the worst cases he's encountered in his career.

Charles Foti was a long-time sheriff in New Orleans, and he said it's one of the most unfortunate things he's ever dealt with in his life, WDSU News reported.

"(It's upsetting to) all of us who have senior parents, grandparents, elderly aunts and uncles where you place them in a facility because they need around-the-clock care, where you trust their lives and their health to medical professionals," he said.

Salvador and Mable Mangano, the owners of Saint Rita's Nursing Home in Chalmette, have been charged with 34 counts of negligent homicide. Authorities said they turned down offers of rescue.

Foti said one of the doctors at the nursing home told investigators he had two buses ready to go but the owners of the nursing home declined to evacuate.

There may be more criminal cases related to the rising death count from Hurricane Katrina.

Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti said he will investigate every death at a nursing home or hospital that's not deemed to be from natural causes. And he said he won't hesitate to bring more charges.

Over the weekend, more than 40 bodies were pulled from a flooded New Orleans hospital. Louisiana's attorney general said the two were repeatedly warned to leave.

You forgot to say.....AND THROW AWAY THE KEY! This is just horrible. I wonder if they thought the patients would end up staying out of state instead of coming back after the storm....so they decided to take a chance and try to ride out the storm. Stupid...STUPID selfish people. IMO

Charles Foti? Sheriff Foti?
The same one who was busted at least twice for DWI--actually wrapping a city car around a telephone poll--while in office?
I'll not hold my breath, thank you.

Interesting that they evacuated the year before, but not for Katrina?

What a horrible, horrible thing to happen to those elderly and vulnerable people.
