Whoa this was five years before I was born, but was Gardere ln completely different back then? I cant imagine letting my daughter live there.

I lived in BTR from birth (1957) until 1988 and was in the Gardere area for a few years around the disappearance. In the early/mid 1980s, the Gardere Lane area was very nice--much of it was still unbuilt, and the apartments and houses that were being built were a bit more upscale than the student-grade housing near it.

Side note re terminology: there's not really an area called "east Baton Rouge," or wasn't then at least. The city of Baton Rouge is in East Baton Rouge Parish. The Gardere area is in what would have been southern BTR; Goudchaux's old store was up in the north part of the city proper, neither was in the eastern part of the parish or the city. I think "East Baton Rouge" as used here probably means the parish, not a part of the city. FWIW.

Did she never make it to the shared apartments she lived in after leaving her parents' house? And that's why it's doubtful her former acquaintance saw her at the mall? Because if he had been there, we know he must have been staying somewhere else in the meantime... There's a theory that Eleanor may have been the victim of a serial killer... Several women disappeared over a ten-year period, from 1980 to 1990, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (Susan Oliver Scott being one of them)... Of course, she could just as easily have vanished and decided to start a new life somewhere (the check cashed)... Anything is possible...
