Autopsy shows elderly Denham Springs couple died of blunt force injury to the head, police say

An elderly Denham Springs couple found dead in their pool company building died of "blunt force injury to the head," according to a preliminary autopsy report released by police Friday.

Eugene "Frank" Gurley, 72, and Patricia Gurley, 70, died Tuesday at National Pool Builders, Inc., located on Pete's Highway on the east side of Denham Springs.

Officers were dispatched to the warehouse of the pool business for a wellness check after the Gurleys hadn't been heard from since Monday night, Womack said Wednesday. Officers found the couple's bodies inside the building.

Suspect captured in Louisiana double murder of former Alabama couple

A person of interest in the bludgeoning double murder of a former Alabama couple was captured this afternoon in Kentucky.

Michael Collins, 45, was wanted in connection with the deaths of Eugene “Frank” Gurley, 72, and Patricia Gurley, 70...

He is currently being held in a Kentucky jail as a fugitive from Louisiana. Once he is extradited, he will be transported to Denham Springs, where he will be charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of simple burglary.

Denham Springs officers responded Tuesday to the scene in Livingston Parish, not far from Baton Rouge, on a welfare check. Womack said neighbors of the couple reported neither had been seen or heard from since Monday. Officers and the Gurleys’ son ultimately forced entry into the business and discovered the crime scene. Womack called the crime the most “senseless and heinous” in his career.

Law enforcement officers in Louisiana and Tennessee are looking for Michael T. Collins, 45, who lived in a trailer parked at the business. The couple lived elsewhere in the city.

Denham Springs Police identified Collins, who has a long criminal record, as a person of interest in the double-homicide. He has not been seen in the area since the couple was found dead during a welfare check Tuesday night.

Police believe Collins fled to northeast Tennessee in Frank Gurley’s white 2016 Nissan Frontier pickup. Denham Springs Police Chief Shannon Womack said Friday that authorities received a tip that Collins was seen in the truck in Tennessee, but that has not yet been substantiated.

LIVINGSTON PARISH - Jury selection is expected to take place Monday, in regards to a 2018 murder case linked to a man named Michael Collins.

Collins was accused of slaying Frank and Patricia Gurley, a middle-aged Denham Springs couple who were found beaten to death at their place of business, National Pool Builders Inc.

An autopsy revealed that the two, both in their seventies, died from blunt force injuries to the head.

Authorities discovered that Collins lived in a rented mobile home on the Gurley's property.

Livingston Parish District Attorney Scott Perrilloux said the couple tried to evict Collins from the property shortly before they were killed, but an official motive for the crime remains unclear.

According to officials, Collins allegedly murdered the Gurleys and then fled in their truck.

He was arrested in Kentucky before authorities returned him to Louisiana in December of 2018.

Collins has already been formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
