Judge denies testimony on alleged confession in dismemberment case
BY CHAD CALDER, New Orleans Advocate
December 12, 2014

The Jefferson Parish judge overseeing the Jaren Lockhart murder and dismemberment case on Friday refused a defense request for a full-blown hearing to decide whether to throw out the alleged jailhouse confession of one of the Bourbon Street dancer’s two accused killers.

Judge Steven Grefer refused the request for a hearing that would have included witness testimony about whether Terry Speaks should have been read his rights before his conversations with a cellmate while serving time in New York on an unrelated charge.

Grefer will instead rule after a motion hearing scheduled for Jan. 12 in 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna.

Read that headline and my heart dropped. I read it to mean the Judge wasn't going to allow the testimony about the confession period. As in, throwing the confession out as evidence. Just to the contrary. This is good news. I'm sure the defense attorneys were wanting a free crack at questioning the prosecution witnesses.

Five days after Bourbon Street dancer Jaren Lockhart's torso washed up on a Mississippi beach in 2012, Margaret Sanchez told detectives she knew nothing about the woman or her homicide. On the morning police believe Lockhart was fatally stabbed after leaving her job at Temptations Gentlemen's Club, Sanchez said she was in Kenner, vomiting and defecating throughout the house because of the "bad shrimp" she ate the night before, she told the detectives during the June 12, 2012 interrogation.

She also asserted that she was learning for the first time from the police that the man she met six months earlier and alternately called her husband and boyfriend, Leslie Allen Rice, had given her a false name...

During the interview, the Hancock County detectives referred to Lockhart only by her stage name, Riot, who was the person seen leaving Temptations with Sanchez and Speaks. Sanchez told the detectives she did not know Riot, according to the transcripts.

I have a feeling that they are going to go free. I haven't read about any solid evidence. It is all circumstantial.

There are some legal experts who would even argue that circumstantial evidence is more persuasive than direct evidence. For example: The People of California vs Scott Peterson.
Also the fact that MAS's stories constantly changes.

I pray they don't get away with this horrible crime. There had to be something at the Kenner house or in MAS's car that would implicate one or both of them.? And if not, the video of them leaving Temptations with Jaren and their hideous hair-dye jobs when they were caught on the run would be enough for me to find them both guilty as sin if I was on that jury.

JMO, but I don't think they will walk. I agree about the power of circumstantial evidence, and also recognize that we haven't seen any evidence yet, really. That's not to say it doesn't exist. Personally, I believe that it does.

Again, JMO.

More interesting statements from the interview with Sanchez after her arrest in article on nola.com today. Her account is so crazy that I really wonder if she has any idea what happened. Hopefully Speaks will set her straight and they both end up in:jail: for a long time.

Sanchez admitted that she and Speaks had been at Temptations, having drinks, when she met "a girl" who was seeking crystal methamphetamine. She said she escorted the girl to Stiletto's next door, for introduction to a stripper called Twacky Tracy. Tracy's boyfriend was a meth dealer known as Mid-City Charles, Sanchez told the detectives.

"I don't even remember what the girl that I was with looked like," Sanchez said. "I couldn't tell you she had short hair. I couldn't tell you if she had long hair. I couldn't tell you if she was tall or short or fat or skinny. I couldn't tell you any of that."

Interesting that MAS mentions Addie Hall.

Five days after Bourbon Street dancer Jaren Lockhart's torso washed up on a Mississippi beach, Margaret Sanchez told detectives she knew nothing about the woman or the details of the killing. She said that on the morning police think Lockhart was fatally stabbed, she was in Kenner, vomiting and defecating throughout her house because of "bad shrimp" she ate the night before.

Her statements were made during an interrogation 2 1/2 years ago, and a transcript of the interview was filed into the court record Monday as Sanchez and co-defendant Terry Christopher Speaks near trial. The transcripts and other documents provide the public with the first look at the early stages of the Lockhart homicide investigation and Sanchez's initial response to being a suspect.

[...]

"He's supposed to be my husband," Sanchez told detectives. "But I guess he's not my husband, because I'm being told that Allen isn't even his real name."

[...]

Sanchez replied, "Is that the girl I keep hearing about, that everybody keeps telling me about from the news?

"Yes," Grannan replied. "Do you understand that you left, you and Allen left the bar with her, OK?"

"I felt so bad for her family, because I had a friend, my friend was Addie Hall," Sanchez said. "She was cut up and was cooked, and her boyfriend jumped off a hotel."

Respectfully snipped by me.

BTW- My husband gave me a first edition copy of Shake the Devil Off after noticing that I had lots of spare time in between my Websleuths visits while waiting for Jaren's case to go to trial. I think I might just start it tonight. Maybe Donamena was on to something when she suggested (in another forum) that there was some serious voodoo going on in NOLA back in 2005. It sounds like whether she intended to or not, Addie left a heavy spell on Margaret.

No comment on the "voodoo" aspect, but agree that Addie's mutilation made a lasting impression on MAS.

Not sure if anyone else posted this (is also on the Justice for Jaren Facebook page), but a documentary has been made about the Zack and Addie story and includes interviews with MAS. The short video clip on the wgno link gave me goosebumps- the creepy kind. I wonder if any of it can be used in the trial?

I wonder when the interview took place?

I seriously doubt they will walk. The confession will come in. MAS's story will come in and is inconsistent with the videos. Their deceit and running from the police will make any defense they put forward completely unbelievable. TS's past will come in. There is plenty of evidence already known that I am confident. If this case is like others, we also don't know half of what LE has.

Moving right along, finally! Hope that June trial date stands. :crossfingers:

Terry Speaks at the Louis Armstrong Airport, October 2014

Terry Speaks, the former Kenner resident accused of killing and dismembering Bourbon Street dancer Jaren Lockhart, is scheduled to stand trial next week on a charge of failing to register as a sex offender in Jefferson Parish. Authorities say Speaks, 42, didn't tell them of his sex offender status after he moved to Jefferson in early 2012.

"The state is ready to try that case," Assistant District Attorney Tommy Block announced in court during a status hearing Tuesday (March 4). He said, however, that the case might "resolve itself" by Monday, suggesting Speaks might plead guilty.

[...]
The state knows of no impediment to the June 15 trial date for Mr. Speaks," Block said. "So we will be ready to proceed on the homicide charge on that date."

Asked by the judge whether he anticipates delays, Speaks' attorney, John Benz said, "Not at this time."

Sanchez was in court, too, but her case was not addressed. Prosecutors have said they plan to put her on trial after Speaks, but a date has not been set.

Speaks is expected to be tried separately from his alleged accomplice, Margaret Sanchez, though Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick’s office has yet to split up the cases. Her trial date is expected to be set in May.

[...]
Assistant District Attorney Tommy Block noted that Speaks’ trial on failing to register as a sex offender could be resolved by Monday, but he said jury selection would begin Wednesday if it isn’t. That charge stems from a 2003 conviction for having sex with a minor in North Carolina.

The trials will take place in 24th Judicial District Court before Judge Stephen Grefer.
