LA - Michael Noel, mentally ill man killed by deputy

Maybe you could share your experience in Crisis Intervention when issuing a Mental Writ. Especially the part where the subject is bipolar and a paranoid schizophrenic. Also could you speak to the issue of restraint and UoF if/when the subject becomes combative and a threat to to others?

If it's not to much trouble, would you be so kind as to explain the investigation process or do we just need a pitchfork, fire and a rope?

I believe that the LA. State Police have yet to release details/report of the of the investigation. I would hope that it's more than being sassy or the "boss man" mentality.

One would hope, but they use coded language so we have to infer their real meaning.

I worked with chronically mentally ill adult women in a group home setting for a number of years. Many were in and out of state hospitals. Some on meds, others refusing meds, and some discontinuing because they felt that they no longer needed meds. Many parents and family members reported that the patient was calm, loving and always mellow. I had one "docile" woman walk calmly into the commercial kitchen and rip a metal shelf from the wall, drop it on the floor and charge at me with a pot lid. I was bruised from head to toe. Other residents intervened to assist the counselor in rescuing me. Mace di nothing to stop the attack.
I totally believe that LE and EMTs need continued training on how to deescalate volatile situations.

The cops were called to the home 100 times over the last 15 years for various reasons, NOT just for this young man:

"A spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office also said that, over the past 15 years, deputies have responded to that home more than 100 times. The calls have been for the following: disturbances, domestic violence disturbances, attempted suicide, mental complaints, residential burglary, assistance, a disturbance with a fire call, trespassing in progress, telephone harassment, warrants, medical issues, theft, animal complaints and forgery. The spokeswoman said the Noel family has lived there for some time."

This is interesting, I guess, but without knowing how many years the Noel family has lived there it's meaningless. How long is some time? What if it's only been two years, and in that two years there have been three calls?

They shouldn't have even put this information out there, IMO, and no matter if they did - it has nothing to do what happened to Michael.

So far we don't even know that he hurt an officer. What we do know is that he was shot and killed and his family are upset.
Shootings happen everyday but not all wind up being picked up by media.
There is a reason the family thinks this is unjustified and I trust they have a reason for their feelings.
Not many suffering a loss would go public without a reason. IMO

RBBM - One of the articles stated two deputies were treated for injuries. I'm assuming it was the two deputies trying to subdue MN. Jmo

Actually I think it's very important to understand the entire situation.

I think it's safe to say, LE knew this family. They knew Michael.

Maybe it gives us a glimpse of the turmoil this family has been going through for years. And it also gives us a glimpse of what LE has went through with the family for years.

So, perhaps that does play into this.

How, I'm not quite sure.
But I think the past may have a lot to do with how things transpired that day.

I did not see anything in that link that would help once you have one hand cuffed and the subject has begun fighting you and tasing him does nothing but amp him up...

When you are trying to handcuff and restrain a paranoid schizophrenic, who is agitated and frightened, they will begin to fight very hard as they feel they are fighting for their lives. What do you do if they begin assaulting you and you fear for your one life?

"Minor injuries" is all I've seen.

Could be abrasions as a result of scuffling and trying to handcuff Michael.

That is one interesting comment and makes me wonder if it's something that is driving this discussion.

That's what I think, and maybe some scratches. They probably have to have every on-the-job injury checked at the hospital.

I don't know. A swinging pair of handcuffs could really hurt someone.

If only one was on during the scuffle, the other one was swinging by a chain.

Having one cuff on was much more dangerous than if none were on. For all parties.
