It seems to me if it was a bike thief that picked up the bike, they would have been on foot and would have ridden the bike away. Most people in vehicles don't stop to pick up a bike. A bike is most attractive to someone who is already walking. The bike wasn't seen again so it probably was in a vehicle, along with her

I wondered if she was hit by a drunk driver who panicked and grabbed her and the bike. I always think back to the horrible case of Chante Mallard who hit a man with her car and he was impaled alive in her windshield and she drove him to her house and left him stuck there in her garage, then discarded the body when he died days later. [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chante_Jawan_Mallard"]Chante Jawan Mallard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

But with Mickey's bike being left where it was seems more of a sinister sign but then again, wouldn't a drunk driver want people to think that a serial killer got her rather than a drunk driver?

Hmmmm.

I disagree (respectfully). Every time I pass by the Whiskey Bay exit, I cant help but think of DTL and the victims he dumped there. Not saying that this person is a copycat, but I'm sure he knows the story. As everyone else from the area has said, it is just an overwhelmingly creepy place.

I think it depends on how old you were and if your family followed the events. I heard about the case growing up, but I didn't know any specifics until I read the various comments on this board.

I personally feel this was one person, not two working together with separate vehicles. I also think this was not an accident. I believe if she was bumped it was done on purpose or in pursuit of her. (the end justified the means). I think that if the bike was placed there the night of the abduction, they were in the middle of perpetrating the crime, it was in motion and that motion led them to that direction, meaning that Victim M was in the vehicle and headed to a future crime scene or holding area. If the bike was dumped after the crime, it was to separate themselves "cleanse themselves" of evidence after they were sure the bike was free from forensic evidence in the perps eyes. If M. is alive the bike was dumped either after she was secured at a location the perp felt safe keeping her or was in transit to said perp safe location.

I see many speculate on how could it happen so fast and with M fighting. We must remember M is a small woman and when a perp is in a frenzy they are very very strong.

Also that area where the bike was dumped depending on exact location it was found, I think there is a good chance the bike could sustain some damage from being dropped over the side. Hence leading Mom to believe perhaps an accident. I feel so bad for her.

I don't know about now, but I have been out on the interstate in that area in the wee hours of the morning. There is next to no traffic. Yes it has been many years ago but I remember just how lonely and desolate it seemed. I can see how someone could stop and dump it (would take less than a minute to get out and throw it over) without being seen or heard. Looking for headlights coming from behind you can assure that no one is going to run up your butt, even with it having no side to pull over on.

I hope I am wrong, I just don't feel good about the outcome of this case. I am biased however since being once a victim and knowing once they have you, how slim the odds are of escape. I pray M. beats the odds, I really do... Prayers to her and her family...:(

Heading out for vacation and passed up the Whiskey Bay exit not long ago. No sign of activity. Got the chills just passing by. I just hope something breaks soon!

When was that missign sign with blue tape put up?
Since Thursday, people have been coming in the command center, picking up flyers and tape to take with them on their travels to other cities, states, etc. I swear there are 10s of thousands of flyers posted multi state. It doesn't surprise me at all that a flyer was posted there. Just think how close they were to the bike and didn't know it.

I was wondering if anyone knew if the bike was found parked or kind of washed up onto land under the bridge. And which way does the river flow there? The bike could have been thrown off of I10.. Just a thought.

I completeley agree, and have been advocating this since the news broke.

I suppose you have to live here to be able to truly see that the similarities are probably most definitely coincidence. That is the most common truck here...period. i literally saw 5 yesterday parked side by side at a gas station. And as far as the bike dump area....thats also the place EVERYONE knows is where you go if you want to get rid of evidence. Ask anyone around here where they'd go if they had to get rid of a body and 9 times out of 10 the answer will be the basin. Its a vast, hot, humid swampland filled with predators of all sorts and the whiskey bay exit is the only secluded exit to get down there and hide something. If they did it at night, its possible they thought it was hidden better than it was. Drugs and stupidity could play a part.

DTL wasnt anything special. He commited his crimes in the most common truck around here and dumped his bodies in the most logical place. Similarities are pure coincidence (most likely).

I do not think this will have a happy ending!
I hope they catch the scumm that did this.

It has just become so easy to pick a young woman off the street assault her kill her and dump her. These men are never found.

Girls do not go out alone at night.
dont let friends leave on foot alone or on bike make them stay the night or ride them home...Call a cab!

All it takes is opportunity and availability!

Dont make yourself vulnerable to these animals!

We really need commercials out there on TV Drum it into these girls.
It can happen to you!

Like on ID Discovery!
If i hadnt gotten into that car!
If i hadnt of answered that call!
If i hadnt of opened that door!

Id still be alive!

Instead of Vodka and beer commercials
Lets save a life!

this is not a cell!
And you never know it could save a life so dont knock it!

Her friend could have saved her life by not letting her leave alone that time of the morning on a bicycle! heck ride with her!!!!!!

Young ppl think nothing can happen to them.

Oh, come on. You don't abduct a woman and her bike and not expect a massive search effort.

Maybe it's just me, but the massiveness of this search effort still astounds me. I'm glad to see it, don't get me wrong, but the sheer numbers of volunteers combined with the social networking and national media awareness just seems so huge.

Yes, that's a vast and isolated area but it's also an infamous area. There are lots of vast and isolated areas that are not infamous. Why put that bike right where a murder victim was dumped? Do the math.

Let's be honest.... if it was dumped at night, there are no lights there other than from passing cars. Infamous area, yes. Vast and isolated, yes. Easier to hide what you're doing? Oh yes.

What happened to you, Portabella?

Very long story...lol. Wish they had a thread for victims to share on this forum, I am still always searching for my perp. Don't know if he is still out there or not, but never stop looking. I was young and dumb, and took the wrong ride....my ordeal went on for a day, I got away after a battle and a lot of luck.

I would love this forum to have such a thread so I could utilize other sleuthers in an attempt to see if my guy is still active. Dead. Anything I can find on him. But no luck. Needle in a haystack.

I will say it again, I hope M. is still alive, is given a window of opportunity to escape and that she has the strength (Mental and Physical) to take it. In my prayers....

Out at 3:13 am, Daily Advertiser:

"The mother of Michaela "Mickey" Shunick said she believes her missing daughter is the victim of an accident after police on Sunday found the 22-year-old college student's bicycle under the Whiskey Bay bridge on Interstate 10.

Police say Shunick's bicycle was found about 30 miles east of Lafayette near the swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin, and that Shunick's family confirmed it was her black-and-gold Schwinn.

"We really think that somebody had an accident," said Shunick's mother, Nancy Rowe. "An accident, and maybe hit her bike. What they need to do is go to some truck stop, a public place. Just drop her. By the time that they take an hour to figure out who she is, they can be in another state. Just drop her. Drop her and run. Don't hurt her. A mistake is a mistake."

Read the article here: http://www.theadvertiser.com/articl...ng-Mickey?odyssey=mod|breaking|text|FRONTPAGE

I'm with bijou--I think this must mean that there is damage to the bike, that it's mangled in some way. I don't know if that would be a good sign or not. On one hand, it could mean that a drunk driver hit her and took her in a blind panic, and maybe she's still alive. On the other hand, it could mean that someone hit her on purpose and...well.

I'm glad that a lot of you are night owls--I'm a granny and can't keep my eyes open past 10:30 or so. It's nice to know that sleuthing is being done while I snore! :)
