LA - Two killed, 9 injured in Lafayette movie theater shooting, 23 July 2015

Is there some kind of statistical correlation between widespread media reporting of one mass murder/shooting/massacre and an increase in similar incidents in the weeks that follow?

I know there is about widely-reported suicides.

*I'm assuming a white male with "issues" at this point. Domestic violence/right-wing beliefs/that old PTSD canard (PTSD is linked to suicide FAR more than random violence), and I may well be very wrong.*

What a crazy thing for LE to say -- to have ISIS on the table at all. Odds would be strongly against it being related to ISIS -- it's far more likely to be a far-right wing white male, as many recent studies have shown.

A lot of people don't like that fact. Also a lot of people get vicious if you suggest this might have something to do with gun culture.

IMO asking about ISIS in this situation is sensationalism.

I'm very sorry for everyone in the theatre. I can't imagine how terrifying it was to be sitting there hearing shots and people screaming, and then thinking it was just like Aurora.

Megyn Kelly is interviewing a Police Sgt. who says between 2-3 fatalities and between 6-10 injured. The shooting began at 7:30 CST. Police Sgt not prepared to say if gunman is among the dead. "It's too early to tell if it is related to ISIS"

Ah, Fox News. They never drop their agenda, do they?

WTF.

"In this new environment" where? Oh -- on Fox.

Yeah, the culture/environment of fear, paranoia, xenophobia, and Islamophobia is hardly new in North America.

Apparently people in this country are not allowed to view various news sources or form their own opinions.

Where do you get that? From other people expressing opinions with which you disagree? I don't see anybody posting anything here that says that people are 'not allowed to view various news sources or form their own opinions', and I challenge you to show me any post in this thread that says as much.

Challenge me what? To the tone of comments in this thread?

Where did anyone say you aren't allowed to view whatever news sources you want? What does tone have to do with anything?

How is this any different than pervasive complaints about the liberal media? Who exactly is stopping you?

It's ok to agree to disagree here. Scroll and roll if you need to. There's always the ignore button too, but that goes both ways ;)

58 year old white man.

WTF? That is such a strange age for something like this, isn't it? Not to say that older men aren't capable of crimes. Just seems so weird!!!

Some of y'all follow true crime much more than I do...and have for much longer. Does the age of this killer surprise you too??
