Shreveport police have identified the woman accused of throwing two of her children from the Cross Lake Bridge Friday morning, killing one and seriously injuring the other.

According to SPD, 32-year-old Ureka Black is charged with one count each of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. No bond was set. Black was taken into custody at a rest area in Waskom, Texas early Friday afternoon and is awaiting extradition back to Caddo Parish.

Police say the body of a male infant was recovered from the lake by Shreveport police marine patrol officers after someone reported seeing a child floating near the Cross Lake bridge just before 11 a.m. A marine patrol then found and rescued a five-year-old in the water. That child was taken to LSU Oschner Health Shreveport. He is expected to survive. Police say he was able to tell investigators pieces of information that eventually proved crucial in identifying Black.

That information led to a multi-agency effort to find Black, linking her to a gray Dodge Caravan with a Texas license plate. The vehicle was spotted by a Waskom police officer, which led to her arrest.

Ms. Black has a significant amount of arrests, but not alot of jail time.

Her 2010 arrest was for arson. She set fire to her boyfriends house, and brought along her then 2 year old daughter.

Prostitution charges as well however she was essentially a pimp "helping" an underage girl to learn the ropes. The girl went to police and Ms. Black was busted.

All but ignored parenting classes and anger management classes both part of her probation.

Now a sweet little infant is dead, and a five year old gets to live knowing his own mother tossed him off a da*n bridge to kill him.

Black is held without bond. Hathaway set a date of Dec. 17 for arraignment.

A spokesman for the Caddo Coroner’s Office said they are not yet releasing the age, name and manner of death of the child who died. No reason was given for the delay.

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, jurors heard opening statements from Assistant District Attorney Jason Waltman and Ureka Rochelle Black.

Black requested to be her own counsel in Caddo District Court on Monday morning. She said on Tuesday, that her former attorney Elizabeth Gibson, did not work with her and did not provide her proper representation.
