Laura Babcock Murder Trial 11.09.17 - Day 13

I don't understand why this photo was included.

Could be anything.. ie DM could have photoshopped himself into that photo (that photo, I do not believe was part of Falconer's presentation).. it's possible that DM knows that that particular photo was from a different date.. or perhaps he was out of the country on the actual date he remembers that photo, or something that would suggest that Falconer doesn't know what he's talking about... but in order to present something like that, wouldn't DM have to later come back to it during his own defence? To me, he is once again trying to present evidence in his own defence, without bringing forth his own witnesses and opening himself up to all that that entails. Will be interesting to see how all of this plays out - he is supposedly finished his cross, except he's holding it over until Monday in case he thinks of some amazing way to better make his point, by then?

Ugh.. I see where this is going.. DM created all those photos??? And level 1 is only learning the basics for crying out loud.. Pretty sure Falconer already testified that the digital info was not manipulated and original..

So, is this his angle? His defense is that the photos have been manipulated by photoshop?

No nothing yet, but MS is in pics everywhere.

Yeah buddy, here, have the red bag on wheels, woo hoo, it's your lucky day! And then, since you're such a great rap artist, why dont' you rap some special rap lyrics to describe what we did today! Here, take a pose and I'll snap your pic!

So DM thought he could fool people into believing that you can manipulate photos and the meta data wouldn't change? I guess he figured there's no way they've figured out that these ones have been modified so I'm going to use that. Except they weren't looking at those pics as evidence so they didn't look at the metadata on them.

So DM thinks that just be showing them in the courtroom, but not providing the metadata on them, will suffice to make the jury believe that any picture can be modified and LE wouldn't even be able to tell.

I hope the Detective is getting the point across that this is not the case.

MOO

I'm hoping this jury is full of smart people that can see through DM's smoke and mirrors.

To discredit LE's expert witness, to raise reasonable doubt about everything else (the incriminating texts, dates, contexts, etc)?

My best guess would be there was/ were previous murder(s) before LB. Must have learned how hard it is to dispose of a body and evidence the hard way. One does not go from non murderous to a murderer and jump right to an incinerator straight away. No, Id bet there were others. Im just glad hes getting nailed for what LE can prove thus far. Im also right with everyone else who feels CN, SS, and AM should be behind bars as well.

You're probably correct. We've also learned about many "accidents" that DM has been near or associated with from AB's book. On a job site, a former gf, etc.

Could it be just because he had to move the Eliminator out of the hangar so he wanted a full tank of gas in case he felt the "urge" to do another burn quickly? It appears that it was left at the hangar until Sept when it was moved into the barn, not to be used again until TB. And apparently it was full of gas at that time.

MOO

Wasn't MS's testimony that he stayed at the hangar to clean up TB's truck while DM went out for gas/propane?

I'm hoping this jury is full of smart people that can see through DM's smoke and mirrors.

imoo of course, but I think the jury won't give it the time of day, unless and until, DM actually calls his own experts in and presents a defence where the Crown and Dungey can have a go at what is presented. Up to that point, he's just putting out little bugs of what he hopes will be 'reasonable doubt' into their minds - also he can't resist the opportunity to enlighten the court in regard to his many talents, what with all of his various software certificates (2 month part-time college courses make him expert enough to go up against a forensic computer specialist!) - how many businesses did this guy have?? The jury will have a foreman and there will be enough smart people amongst them, that these little distractions will not impress. jmo.

In the tarp picture. What's that pointy part of the tarp ? Could that be a shoe? Foot? Also what's that white thing with a gold strap underneath those clear and red plastic bags? Is that a purse?

BBM I thought the clear/red plastic looked similar to the "repair" of broken glass from DM's home. The sliding patio door.

I really believed MM knew nothing prior to TB's murder, but the video today had her in the room when MS was rapping about killing LB. So, I assume she knew something? Why did she have to leave the garage when MS rapped for his friends?

I wonder if it wasn't so much that she wouldn't witness the 'rap', but rather, that she wouldn't witness how much he was telling other people?

I wonder what that 'other matter' is???

Possibly the matter which the judge said was "inappropriate" the previous day. He didn't say it was inadmissible, so I suspect that it was offensive to the sensibilities of the people in the courtroom and the general public, should it be released by the press.

Sorry if I'm obsolete or out of place, trying to catch up... I wondered about the pointy thing too.. the Crown is intimating that this is LB's body inside that rolled tarp. If we think about it in terms of that a body could be inside, I think the pointy end would be the 'head' end. (and so I was envisioning a knife sticking out of a skull, but of course, that is ridiculous!)... anyway... I just wanted to say that after seeing that photo.. and looking at the dog.. and having a general idea of how large the dog is from having seen the dog in other photos at other times... my guess is that that tarp is wayyyyyyyy longer than 6 feet. Then I started thinking about pool covers, and wondered if that tarp is actually nothing at all, as far as this case is concerned, and that it could be just simply the swimming pool tarp rolled up, waiting to cover the pool? People store their tarps/covers in different ways, perhaps DM just rolled his and tied it.... perhaps the meaningfulness of having taken the shot, was not the tarp, but the dog. Just sayin. ie if the tarp was being transported, or their was a proud face beaming away at having rolled it up (rolled his first spiff or whatever it's called), one might get a different impression.... but considering the date that LB was killed (July 3/4), that would coincide with the timing for a usual 'pool opening'.

When you roll a pool cover, it puffs out on the ends, where the hem is thicker and less flexible, not in the middle. The pointy thing, as a previous poster mentioned, looks like someone grabbed the tarp and pulled it, perhaps to drag it into position. If the tarp contains a body, and I am convinced that it does, then it's not unexpected that the tarp would extend a couple of feet on either side.

Canadian Tire sells a blue, 8' x '10' tarp for $10.00.

Hello
I haven't followed from the beginning just the trial but wanted to thank everyone for links and commentary, everyone's additions fills the gaps so thank you. Poor Laura may she rest in peace and watch over her family x

My impression: DM may have broken into LB's parents' home after the murder. MS was on 'clean up duty' at the crime scene.

My apologizes if this has been beaten to death but this is what I got from reading that text. This message was from DM to MS after he murdered LB and went through her belongings. LB had money on her, in her luggage or purse. The "present" was SL's ipad which was with LB and her belongings.

IIRC there was mention (rumour perhaps?) early on in this case a friend claimed LB had a shoe box full of money...like a few thousand dollars. Can anyone confirm? LB's father said on the stand, LB left an envelope with a thousand dollars in it, along with her dog at their house, while they were out.

She had mentioned she was going on a trip to Disneyworld or Vegas so I suspect the money was for her trip in case she needed it. After DM murdered her, he went through her belongings and found her money plus SL's ipad which he obviously planned on giving to MS as a "present."

Blasiak said Babcock talked about going on a trip to Disneyland or Las Vegas. A perk of her new job working as an escort.

The prosecution maintains that Millard and co-accused Mark Smich killed Laura on July 3 or 4, 2012, mere days after she left her beloved Maltese dog, Lacey, and an envelope stuffed with about $1,000 at her parents’ home while they were attending a family function. While she was still nominally living at home, Laura had for months been “couch-surfing”, crashing with friends, unwilling to abide by her parents’ rules, but popping in and out.

Laura’s peripatetic habits by 2012 — and a claim to her parents in late June that she was likely going away on a trip — was why the family waited for about a week before reporting her missing to police, her father explained.

Now messages from Millard and "Kowalski" from July 2012. I'm not really sure what's being said here. Seems to be something about sex.

Next conversation with Kowalski. first a pic, no message, then, "What you do?!" "You told me the only way to make her 🤬🤬🤬." "You asked me if I minded if you." "That was the last I heard of her." #LauraBabcock

The photo was a shot of #LauraBabcock and the headline "Police looking for woman last seen in Roncesvalles 3 weeks ago"

There was a screen shot here too. It's of a news story about police looking for Laura Babcock. One of the messages in that exchange read "what'd you do?"

AM needs to be called as witness, and AM needs to be honest and truthful about what these specific texts meant. Question specifically "What'd you do?" text msg to DM

For context, AM stayed around as a close DM friend following this knowledge, and even 10 months after LB killed, AM involved himself in ferrying the drugs out of Maplegate after DM arrest in May 2013
DM also thought CN could get AM to change his testimony in the TB trial, they were still buddies. Not some innocent BS, AM knew DM, and DM knew AM.

This is a pivotal point for AM to choose his future.
Either (a) Be truthful, show the world that he can now be trusted, recover some respect, and be able to look at LB parents in the eye and truly feel remorse for what DM and MS did to their daughter.
or (b), If AM does not testify the truth, then he ought be relegated to the same camp as CN, SS, lying 🤬🤬🤬, marked for life by the world as DM's wingman, complicit in covering up a murder, despite lack of charges

Yesterday's testimony, though enlightening, caused me a lot of confusion. Specifically as to who was where, and when? We had been led to believe that on the afternoon of July 3rd, Smich & Millard picked up LB at the subway. All three phones went to Maple Gate, where I thought they stayed until about 11:00 AM on July 4th when they headed to the lakeshore to dispose of the phone, then dropping Smich in Oakville, then Millard continuing to Waterloo. Today we learned about text messages between Millard and Smich during that time, giving the impression that they were not together. Anybody figure this out?

My only reasonable explanation is that Smich was elsewhere in the house and was simply they were simply communicating via text. Evidence of this may be when Millard leaves on the fourth and texts Smich that he "has left some dough on the table downstairs". This would seem to confirm that Smich was indeed still in the house. Again this is confusing because I was under the impression that he had left with Millard. This would however leave Smich alone to claim and rename the iPad.

Anyway, I wasn't really impresses with the crowns presentation. Chronologically it was all over the place. It was often unclear who was talking to who, and that was the opinion of the reporters that were actually in the courtroom. I can just imagine the confusion amongst the twelve members of the jury.

The claiming and ownership of the ipad is a little unclear too. It seems the required iTunes account was Millard’s, and he wouldn’t give the password to Smich on request. Months later, testimony in the TB trial implies it’s still DM’s to give away.

Texts definitely seem to imply that Smich was at the house, and possibly with Marlena. “Where you at?” seemed to be asking where DM was at in a process rather than physically - it got the response “going to sleep”. Evidence right now does suggest the possibility that Smich was a direct participant in the cremation but not the murder. We will see what is to come, and how the judge instructs the jury.

I wondered as well about the possibility that LB was actually killed in the morning at the farm.

I caught some of it. He is shameless.
Ya dont need **** jus cause ya blah blah blah
You like free **** ya still gotta work for it - think blah blah. I'm shameless
sounds like he says even Jesus couldn't beat this I'm serious.

Yeah. It had the feel of a place in long decline, and long missing a woman or somebody else to make it a home. So depressing, but then again sometimes men only care about utility and function. If a case of Chunky soup and a raft of Goldfish crackers does the trick, well why not.

And that basement. Depraved, wasted existence conjured in three dimensional space. You can feel the rot in the pictures and video.
And this girls stand in line so worthy, wished someone could help more young girls wake up and feel they deserve more.

Yeah. Many find themselves and their worth as they get a little older. Absolutely tragic and arbitrary that Laura never got the chance to learn from the same mistakes that many girls and young women make.
