CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A 19-year-old has been charged in connection to the death of a Chesapeake woman who was found dead after being reported missing.

61-year-old Laura Miles, who was reported missing under suspicious circumstances, was found dead on May 17 in a wooded area in the 4600 block of Taylor Road.

On Saturday, Police charged 19-year-old Raheem Lamont Cherry in the death of Laura Miles.

Cherry is being charged with 1st-degree murder, robbery, and abduction. He is currently being held in the Chesapeake City Jail.

Miles was reported missing after her vehicle was discovered away from her home and place of work and in a location she did not normally go, police said. Her black truck was found just a few minutes' walk from where police found her body, WTKR reported.


Family felt 'helpless'

Miles' son, Chris Rolleck, remembered her as a dedicated hockey mom and her kids' biggest supporter.

"She loved everything from hunting, fishing, the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, NASCAR," Rolleck told WTKR Tuesday. "Just camping with her husband. She was just a beautiful person."

Investigators said Miles was staying in the area near Taylor Point Apartments.

Rolleck said his mother was in the area for work and that the family was originally from the Buffalo, New York, area.

He said she often worked out of state as a safety manager for dredging crews.

"I just appreciate everybody who helped," he said. "It was a pretty helpless feeling for us... nothing we could do."

Rolleck said he was grateful for the community's support.

Raheem Lamont Cherry is charged with the possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evading and eluding police, and reckless driving after he allegedly led police on a high-speed chase through Southampton County and Suffolk on Jan. 23, court records state.

Miles was on the phone with her husband when she was abducted from an apartment complex parking lot in Chesapeake on May 17. Her body was discovered later that day in a wooded area behind a YMCA located at 4626 Taylor Road. She had several stab wounds on her body, court records state.

Miles was on the phone with her husband when she was abducted. He told police he heard her scream and then what sounded like a struggle before the call was disconnected. He tried to call his wife back several times, but she never answered the phone. He called the CPD to report the abduction, according to court records. Miles’ husband also received odd text messages from her number after the attack — texts he knew she wouldn’t have written. One text claimed that Miles was “okay,” but her husband said she never spelled that word that particular way. She also didn’t tell him that she loved him, which was how she ended every text conversation, court records state.
